    Merrell Hikers for Hunting

I’ve had several pairs of an earlier model of these boots. I’ve always really liked them. There is no break-in period and they are LIGHT. You could snug ‘em up and basically run a 10K in them, right out of the box. After reading a bunch on CWT.com (thank you, Amanda) I figured that a quality insert was in order. I started using the SuperFeet Sport insert (the green ones) and I found that they make these boots even better. After these, I went to the Merrell Phaser Peak boot which are a little higher and have even more support (still with the SuperFeet inserts though) and although I like them, I will consider going back to the lighter hikers when the Phaser Peak’s buy the farm. The down side is that I get two, maybe three years out of hikers. And I’m not out pounding the hills every weekend (also, my backpack is rarely burdened down with game, but that’s another story). But it’s so nice to not have a break-in period. (Remember that while your foot is breaking your boot in, your boot is breaking your foot in.) It’d be nice to have a comfortable boot that lasted 5 to 10 years but it’s be tortuous to have an uncomfortable boot last that long. Just my $.02.

    Why only UnGuided Hunting Stories?

I like DIY stories just as much as the next guy but I don’t believe that hunters who hire a guide somehow didn’t “earn” it. Outfitters and/or guides have a lot to teach and it’s awesome that they can make a living (notice I did not say “get rich”) spending their time outdoors, often year around, so they can help someone accomplish something they most likely otherwise would not accomplish. I respect the heck out of a person who builds their own house. But a person who buys their own house still "earned" it, just in a different way.

    Pistol grip

Agreed! I have that combo and think adding the panning attachment is well worth it. You'll have the best of both worlds. Quick, intuitive acquisition with the pistol grip but when you're glassing your grid pattern you can loosen the panning attachment so you can pan horizontally by just lightly moving the binos with the bridge of your nose.

    Man in Mountain Goat Suit

Maybe he was beta testing his new “get close” archery mountain goat invention. Kinda odd though. Here’s an SLC news link: http://www.abc4.com/content/news/slc/story/Hiker-spots-man-in-goat-suit-frolicking-with-a/8tKqdZF7s0eioSivDg8O-w.cspx Here’s another: http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/23/12906188-goat-man-spotted-in-utah-mountains?lite/ I can imagine the conversation: “Honey, it’s 3:00 in the morning. Where are you going dressed as a…oh, nevermind.” “Shhh. Go back to sleep. Don’t worry. I’ll be back by supper.”

    Off Road Shop Recommendations

My 2002 Xterra is completely stock. It gets me where I need to go but I’m looking to see if there are any modifications (body and/or suspension lift... okay, maybe a snorkel, etc.) to get me a few more places. Since my claim to automotive fame is changing the alternator on an’82 Olds Delta 88 (I’m still bragging about that feat, by the way) I won’t be doing it myself. If you have any recommendations for reputable shops in the Valley (I’m in the Tempe area), I’d appreciate it. Feel free to PM me. Thank you. -Jim

Hiking socks- what do you use

David, I've not tried those socks but I like that they don't have cotton in them. (I also like that they're made in the USA.) I just bought a pair of these at Bass Pro but haven't spent enough time in them to give you an opinion other than they seem comfy. Maybe a little thick. (Made is USA also.) http://www.basspro.com/RedHead-Lifetime-Guarantee-AllPurpose-Socks-for-Men-1-Pair/product/34713/93735 Here are some lighter ones, also American made. http://www.basspro.com/RedHeadreg;-Day-Hiker-Socks-for-Men--1-Pair/product/34717/82768?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT These are both spendier than the Cabela's socks you were looking at but also have more wool (and the whole Cabela's v. Bass Pro debate often comes down to which requires less gas to get to). Interesting that the US seems to still be in the sock-making business. I like that. -Jim

Great pictures! Makes me question my "wet year = phenomenal antler growth" hypothesis. These are some whopper bulls. Thanks for posting.
  12. Good point. This is from the Vortex website: Range Reflective 11-1000 yards Range Deer 11-500 yards Luckily, when ranging at long distances there always seems to be a reflective target close by. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever actually ranged a deer at more than a hundred yards or so. Usually it's the ground, boulder, rock face, etc. that's around it.

    Obamacare Upheld.....thoughts??

My beef with the Affordable Care Act is that it didn’t go far enough. I would have liked to see a public option. Instead, Obama, ever the pragmatist, allowed the insurance companies to write the law. At least it’s a step in the right direction though. Like it or not, we already have universal health care coverage. We just have the most inefficient kind. The uninsured or indigent don’t get turned away from an emergency room for life-threatening (or often even not-so-life-threatening) conditions. They will get services. Expensive services that save their lives. So the question then becomes who pays for those services? We all do. Hospitals write off their losses on their taxes so taxpayers pay. They also charge a boat-load more for people who do have insurance to compensate them for the losses they just wrote off. All the while, they chase people into bankruptcy trying to collect the debt they wrote off and for which they charged everyone else more. Hospitals and insurance companies do not get stuck holding the bag. Ever. Health care is not a free market at all. If you don’t want a Big Mac, you can by a Whopper, or vice versa. Or you can decide to not spend your money on either. But if you go into the ER with a heart attack you don’t vote with your dollars and opt for the buy-one, get-one-free special on kidneys because it’s cheaper and that’s what you choose to spend your money on. If everyone had their druthers they would not consume health care at all. Personally, I’d just choose to be healthy. We make people buy liability insurance on their automobiles, not to protect them, but to protect the people who would end up bearing the costs of being hit by an uninsured person. The analogy to health care is not perfect but seems kinda close. Regarding business owners who currently offer health insurance, I’m not sure how Obamacare incentivizes (Mr. Quimby, please excuse the functional shift of attempting to use a noun as a verb. Generally, I’m against that.) employers to drop their coverage because the penalty is less than the premium. For example, say the premium is $1,000/month/employee. Now, say the penalty for NOT insuring those same employees is $500/month/employee. Subtracting the penalty from the premium yields a $500 difference. Well, before Obamacare the difference was $1,000 (premium of $1,000 – 0 penalty = $1,000) but the employer still chose to insure its employees. (Although I’m still not convinced that employer-based health care is the best way to go.) Finally, I agree that polls show that many people are against “Obamacare.” But when you ask those same people if they’re “for” being able to keep their kids on their health insurance until they’re 26th birthday (or whatever the age is) or if they are “for” not allowing insurance companies to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, a lot of people say yes. Those are both components of Obamacare.

    Monsoon Forecast

That's pretty cool! They put a lot of thought into that. I know the "equal chances percipitation forecast" doesn't give us a lot of information but I'll take it over a "below normal" forecast anytime.

  16. I'm looking forward to your review. I called over to Outdoorsmans and they have a number of them on order for customers but nothing on the shelf to play with yet (should have some soon though). I'd be interested in how it compares to the Leica 1200.

    1976 Corvette Stingray Coupe

My dad is now in his 70s and getting in and out of a low-slung sports car is not getting any easier. Therefore, he’s selling his ’76 Corvette Stringray Coupe. He’s cared for it well and would like to see it go to someone who will drive it and care for it or restore it (no open-title sales, please). It’s being offered on CWT.com first and if sells here a donation will be made to help the site that we all enjoy. He's asking $6,900. Here's some info with a photo: · The perfect vehicle for getting your coues deer to the taxidermist quickly. · 85,000 original miles (never restored) · Comes with original window sticker and owner’s manual · T-tops · Power steering, brakes and windows · Air conditioning · tilt-telescoping steering wheel · Dark Green with white interior · Excellent, original condition · Great candidate for restoration or daily driver

  24. Good post. I've also wondered about how much lead makes its way into the meat we bring home. On the other hand, while growing up, it seems I always had lead either sinkers or .177 cal pellets in my mouth. That could make a good point either for or against the potential threats of lead poisoning, depending on how you look at it. LOL. So true! And don’t forget all the lead-based paints in our homes (and even on our cribs) when we were kids! Maybe we were just building up our tolerance.
  25. I shoot-lead free bullets for hunting not because I’m concerned about what condors (or turkey vultures or coyotes) ingest. I do so because I’m concerned about what my family ingests. Plus, they seem to perform well. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to oppose a good idea simply because a bad idea might follow it. Maybe just wait for the bad idea and then oppose that. Sometimes the slope isn’t a slippery as it seems. I concede, however, that sometimes it is.
