    trail cam questions

Here's an example of a picture from one of the cheapo $50 Walmart Wildview cameras. I did not re-size or crop the picture. It is exactly the way it came from the camera. As you can see the picture is some what grainy and lacking in detail. There is no time or date stamp and as mentioned the flash is pretty much useless. The camera is aimed south west so I have to rely on the shadows to tell me what time of day the deer came in. But on the positive side I don't have to worry about it getting ripped off. This paticular picture is kind of frusterating to me! It's obvious it's a buck, but because of the lack of clarity and photo quality I can't tell how good of a buck it is??? For as early this year as the picture was taken it looks like it may turn out to be a pretty good one. Perhaps he'll come back again. Time will tell.

I'd bet a crisp new dollar bill that the majority of stolen/damaged cameras is done by fellow hunters. Any takers?

    trail cam questions

If you are planning on putting them on water, then I would buy the cheapest ones you can find. SERIOUSLY, they will more than likley get stolen or damaged. Walmart sells a digital Wildview camera for about $50 and for the money it works pretty good. Just don't expect real high quality pictures. If it's quality pictures you want then there are several out there that run $200-$400 that will do the trick, but I sure wouldn't leave any of them on a water hole. Under the right conditions a deer or elk can trigger them out to 40-60 feet. Most of the time at night that is further than the flash will work.
  6. That's good to hear! If you guys are guiding out there then we're probably in a good spot. This is my third tag in four years and I really want to break the 80 inch mark. Going through the public tags is tough in NM. You've really got to get lucky twice. First to draw the tag and second to get assigned a good ranch. Thanks for the info!

    New Commissioner

Other than being a member of the NRA I didn't see squat on his resume that suggests that he's a hunter or supports hunting. In fact it seems to me that it reads more like a liberal tree hugger type. Like the rest of you, we'll just have to wait and see???
  8. You aint thinking of switching over from those Bergers are you Jamaro?
  9. I elk hunted there a few years ago and was surprised at how few deer we saw! I think I saw like 4 deer in nine days. We were hunting the north and west side of the San Mateo's. I've heard that the southern end of the range and the eastern side of the range have more deer numbers. Good luck!

    New coues gun

Very nice! Looks like a real skull cap buster to me
  11. As mentioned in the article the NRA will most likley begin to file law suits in several other gun ban cities across the country. This will no doubt cost a lot of money. It would probably be a good idea for those of us that enjoy our rights to own guns to either join the NRA, renew our membership, or just send them a check to help the cause. I know a lot of people, including myself, have issues with the way the NRA is run, but the truth is they're all we've got!!!
  12. Does anyone know what's wrong with the link to the San Carlos website? I've tried it several times over the last few weaks and it's dead. Thanks.
  13. Thanks Bobbyo, I got a good chuckle out of that one!

    Non-residents

I agree the western states various big game drawings can be tricky, but with a little research and luck you should be able to do much better than zero tags in six years. Take Wyoming for example, I know the red desert areas have very low odds, but I also know that there are several other units in Wyoming with good quality and much lower odds. Also there are many areas with easy draw odds and big goats, they just have some private land issues. With a few phone calls a person could find these ranches and work out a deal with the rancher. Not all of them want money for hunting there property, and I know some of them would love a few mindfull hunters to come and reduce the antelope population on there property. Each year look over the draw odds for the various hunting units and look for potential sleeper units. I know in Colorado there are units for deer that can be drawn by non residents with 0-1 preferance points and these units have world class potential. In fact I think the world record typical mule deer was killed many years ago in a pretty easy to draw unit. Utah has the limited draws which can be difficult to draw, but they also have general hunts which are much easier to draw. In fact, most years there are usually left over archery tags for deer in Utah. The general rifle deer hunts could probably be drawn every other year in the unit I hunt. Nevada has difficult draws as well but with a litttle research you can also find the sleeper uinits. I drew a deer tag there for this fall and it was the first time I ever applied. I had zero points. I'm hunting the early season, and we'll be back packing in to get away from other hunters, but at least I'll be hunting the high country in October. There are good genetics in my unit and the possibility is there for a monster, but for the most part we'll be looking for 180 inches or better. I also drew a deer tag and another antelope tag in New Mexico this year. This is my third antelope tag in 4 years over there. Deer used to be over the counter over there, but you can still draw tags on a pretty consistant basis if you do your homework. I've only had one archery bull tag 4 years ago, but we drew that the first time we applied. Sorry to ramble on, but my point is that you've got to play the game if you want to go hunting. Each year my goal is to get one or two good tags. I have to apply for 25 tags a year to achieve this, but it can be done. Look at all your options, apply for every bonus/preferance point you can apply for. Even apply for points if you don't think you'll be able to hunt there for a few years. You never know when an opportunity may present itself. I've been applying for deer points in Kansas for four years now even though I doubt I'll be able to hunt there anytime soon. At least I'll have enough points to garuntee me the tag when I decide to go. Talk to ranchers, land owners, guides, and outfitters, you never know when someone might surprise you with some information that enables you to hunt a prime piece of property or helps you get a special tag. Look into getting land owner tags, or putting in on the Outfitter draws they don't all charge as much as you might think and the odds are often much, much better than the regular draws. Good luck!!!!
  15. For starters people need to stop calling them wolves. Wolf/dogs, hybrids, currs, etc are all more accurate terms to classify them. The pure breed of Mexican Grey Wolves is extinct! And for what it's worth burro's and wild horses should be right behind them on the short list of animals that need to be removed from the wild. Neither of which are native to Arizona or even North America for that matter, not to mention they're both domestic livestock gone ferrel. How and why do we give such animals protection is beyond me!

I'm sure he's just baiting the deer and a few bears happend to stop by and check it out.
  18. I saw a post on one of these hunting sites a few months ago that said: "Al Gore didn't invent the internet, but he made up global warming."
  19. Not me. First and second rifle hunts, left the rest blank.

    pronghorn scouting

Blake, that second buck could be him. He was in the exact same area as big brother. Are those from last year? Eli, I saw a buck last October or November that looked like a younger version of Fish Hook. He was herded up with at least 30 or so other antelope several miles to the west of where I watched Fish Hook during the rut. I wonder if that pic you posted is of the same buck I saw with another years growth?

    pronghorn scouting

Here's three more of ole Fish Hook. The first is his profile and is basicly why I started calling him fish hook. When you looked at him from the side all you could see was lots of length and no prongs. However when you saw him from the front or back you could really see his prongs flare out to either side. Blake, there was another buck out there last year that looked like a little brother to that 88 incher. I didn't get any good pic's of him, but he had to have been in the 83-84 inch range. As far as I know he never did get killed. We'll see here real soon if he turns up.

    pronghorn scouting

I'm right with you on the NM tag. I've drawn 2 in the last three years and have killed three of them in my life, but have yet to kill a biggun. NM is just hit and miss on the ranch assignment. Perhaps one day I'll get lucky three times and draw a tag, on a good ranch, and kill a big buck. So untill then I'll just keep my fingers crossed for an AZ tag and in the mean time I'll keep taking pic's of the good bucks I find in the Prescott area.

Effenjeff, is your tag in 19b? If so I'll keep my eyes open for you and let you know if I see anything nice. Terry, I saw pictures of that forward hooking buck that Eli's hunter killed last year but it's not the same buck. I've got a picture of Fish Hook dead that Chris Denham sent me last September but I won't post it because neither I nor Chris knows the hunter or has permission to post. I'd still like to know what he scores if anyone ever tracks it down. The pic of him dead really shows his character and size! I'll keep my camera in the truck again this summer and try to find some more big bucks to post for everyone.
