Things are starting to heat up
Shiras replied to crazyaboutcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
Tommy, Did you draw a Burros rifle tag or is this bow? Either way, good luck! -
I have been contemplating the same thing for myself. I shoot a .30-06 but need a straighter flying bullet if I am ever drawn to AZ. I was actually thinking of the .25-06 myself. The .270 is incredibly hard to beat. Good choice.-Shiras

39 out of 100
Shiras replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
For whatever reason....good job Amanda! I know for me it's always my first or second stop on the web everyday. -
A friend of mine emailed me a picture of a deer I just had to show you guys. I've emailed Amanda the pic, so I hope it comes through. Has anyone heard of this Georgia giant with sharp baseball bats as eyeguards and about a 4 foot inside spread?????? This is easily (to me) the most impressive WT, check that.... most impressive deer of any make or model that I have ever seen, regardless of what it scores. I have no idea if it was harvested this year or if it is even real. My first instinct was that it was a hoax. Holy #@%^&&!!!! if it is real!!! -Shiras

Reynaldo, That was my 3rd choice this year but didn't draw anything. Thanks for your offer. 29 seems like a sleeper to me from what I have read. Maybe next year.-Shiras

Looking for a needle in a haystack
Shiras replied to bullwidgeon's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Bull, Were you guys hunting for Desert sheep or Rocky Mnt. (Or does AZ have both tags available?) From what I have read on the AZ game and fish website, some sheep are transplants and there might only be a couple hundred in a unit (I think that was 27). That would definately be looking for the proverbial needle. Good luck to you guys!-Shiras -
There's something about these deer!
Shiras replied to COOSEFAN's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I don't believe anyone that lives in the east can totally understand and appreciate the Coues deer. The size just isn't there, and to most hunters east of NM, that is what counts, not comparing apples to apples by realizing God made these deer smaller in the first place. My friends think I am a nut case for wanting to hunt Coues, and I too have a hard time explaining why. Actually I've stopped trying. Congratulations on the fine deer. Nice pic and glass too -Shiras -
Ok my optical illusion theory is out the window. That is a toad indeed Congratulations.-Shiras

Shot Dead - Yet Bear Attacks Hunter
Shiras replied to az4life's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
az4life, Seems like I saw something on the Discovery channel a couple years back talking about bear attacks. Black bear was the least likely of Brown, Grizzly and Black. I wish I remembered the documented cases of black bear attacks. It was a miniscule number....although I think all of them were mothers with cubs---not bears after being shot!!!! This might be the first case for that. I have a video somewhere on my computer of a longbow hunter hunting a Grizzly, and after the shot, the bear turned to attack, only to be saved by his guide backing him up with a .416 Rigby. Very interesting. -Shiras -

New Hunting Opportunity in Mexico!
Shiras replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
Sounds pretty good. That's still a chunk of change. I have to wait and see how the first couple years went. That has to be getting pretty close to the end of their southern range. -Shiras -
Is there some sort of kicker off his G2 or is that something sitting by the plastic bag???-Shiras

I guess this makes Jesus a killer for feeding the 5000 with the boy's 5 loaves and 2 fish. Wow, I thought He was the Prince of Peace.... If there is a bigger display of idiocy, I would love to see it. Honestly, I believe this exposes them for the progressive, far left, michael moore loving freaks that they are.

136.?? Good freaking night! Either I need glasses or that is an optical illusion for sure.-Shiras

I bet Josh would have found it had it been laying there for 5 more minutes...-Shiras

AZ4life, I can't wait to hear about your hunt. December 24b was my 1st choice. My buddy that is from Phoenix took a 2x3 there last year and his dad will be there with you somewhere in the unit. He is a highway patrol for AZ. Good luck!! -Shiras

Josh, It was a treestand, and yeah I guess it would be easy to find but only if you walked in off of someone else's property. It's probably 1/2 mile from any road. I share this property with a couple other of guys that leave their stands up and we've never had a problem. We've kind of policed the area ourselves since the rancher doesn't really get back into the woods a lot. Honestly it's my fault for leaving it out there, especially being brand new and not locking it. I guess I was just figuring that with 30 minutes of daylight left, the unthinkable couldn't happen. I've learned a valuable lesson. (I'm actually relinquishing my position on that property to someone else. I had a box blind built for my son and I and someone came by and vandalized it. They pryed all the windows and door off, broke the bench and took a piss in it. Probably the same a-hole) If he was trying to send a message to me that he doesn't want me hunting there anymore, I received it. And it's probably a good thing. There's no telling what I'd do to that scumbag for ruining my son's hunt. Just a note to all honest hunters....thank you for what you stand for. Happy Thanksgiving all. -Shiras

Fellas I want you to know that I actually do know that this is for coues deer, but since I struck on on a tag this year in NM and AZ I just had to share my opening day success story and pics here in northeast Oklahoma. (I'm emailing Amanda the pics) My friend connected at 20 feet this morning on a nice 5x5 (yes 20 FEET) Small but very gnarly bases. Then tonight we went out on his grandads 81 acre farm and sat on a right of way that in 2 years will have a highway running through it. Drew (my buddy) was glassing a far field, and I was watching a closer opening. When there was about 10 minutes shooting light left we decided to get up and start making our way to the truck in hopes of finding a buck in different field. I got up first, started walking, turned around and there he was 235 yards in the field Drew was glassing. I dropped down and used my fold out seat as a rest and 1 shot broke his front leg and clipped both lungs. He went down about 40 yards from the shot. At our surprise he had no eyeguards but good length on beams. To say the least, I am very stoked. I thank the Lord (and have been all night long) for such a wonderful outing with a great friend. Harvesting 2 fantastic animals, and enjoying time away from the pressures of work and life in general. This really is the season of Thanksgiving. Thank you Lord!!!! -Shiras

Eastern whitey success
Shiras replied to Shiras's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
dbull, Oh no my friend. You must be thinking of Arkansas. Oklahoma is the state of Will Rogers and common sense, not incest and beastiality. -
Incredible job Alex (and dad). There is nothing in this world like watching your own child take a deer. It gives me 10x the thrill of shooting one myself. Congratulations, a job well done. -Shiras

Way to go man! I am looking at that unit for myself next year. Fantastic muley, and congrats to Jim on the coues. -Shiras
