thanks all! Bull elk late Nov. rifle. good heads up on Woody Ridge, we had not made it to that side, too bad it is not real "quite" access looks "funky" with area either open or closed.

Thanks all, I hear it about the roads, we started to poke around in a quad cab long box truck and ended up parked and on foot. We are just begining to feel the layout of the unit as it is a "new" one to us. As the G&F write up is pretty clear on basic info we will be working into the areas with less pressure: Woody Ridge silent area and Casner area RR, thanks for the FS road numbers. We have come in from the North by White Horse Knoll, they used to have a nice campground there if a person needed a more civilized camping spot. I am most interested in the Casner area and will work up from Sedona, thank you

little hang up there on my part! yes it is the Camp Navajo, not Fort Apache in the White Mt. Man I need to focus a bit more when asking for input. There are some good bulls/areas around the camp. We will be in 6B proper and not on the camp itself. Do you have to be active military to go "through" the camp? thanks

Thanks, great to see in the wild. Like TJ 30 years and only one for me.

hello all, I just picked up a .375 Ruger. At this point there are few factory loads available: 270 grain and 300 grain respectfully. I am looking to see what successes people have had loading up ammo that is on the smaller side of the caliber, say 200-235. AZ G&F chased my checks and now I need to fill some of my time being "productive" Thanks,
-
Brief update: I had the oppertunity to head out to the Tucson Gun Club this week and test some loads. Eight loads to be exact, so my shoulder showed some signs of use after 24 rounds. All were starting loads but one looked like a pretty good starting point. R15 under a Hornady Interlock 225 grain, 100 yards off a sandbag. thanks

The intent of the sign is to be informative, "I'm on a stand, glassing etc. at "X" location close to here. I think it is a good idea but there are limits. The person who thinks that they can reserve an select area for five days is wrong, if they are in it first and don't leave it is still first come fist serve, but anything else is out of line. It comes back to being respectful of the other guys hunt. We all know that every tank will have hunter activity, or that the prime fly way will have hunters under it, the game passage will have hunter coverage, but in the old cliche "move your feet lose your seat" Now do you see the sign and assume that the hunter is present ? Or, think some wiseguy is trying to cherry pick?
-
It’s a classic catch 22: if you move to a different spot then the guys who ‘reserve” public locations win, if you hunt it the negatives range from a spoiled hunt all the way to "battle of the waterhole". Not to say that this is the case here, but in general I am finding more and more folks who do not share common courtesy of "fist come first serve" and respecting the other guys hunt as you want your hunt respected like: camping on water, showing up at shooting light on a quad. You all know the drill.

Somewhat similar: Up in 27 while looking at a tank I noticed a sign that had been posted at the waters edge. The sign had first and last name of a person who would be on that tank on this date in Dec for bull elk in a white GMC truck and that if he saw anyone else there would be "trouble". This was three years ago and needless to say I was not there looking for the "gentleman" on the given day. Funny thing the sign had his address in Texas, and I imagine that some of my neighbors might have shown him how we do things out here on public land. Last year I found a water bottle with a note containing the same type info at a very busy tank, and I am thinking "Does this work?" if so I have a few "reservations" to make! I can't believe that there people out there with a MINE type of mentality on a piece of public space. Give a call and see what the particulars are in this case, as stated above they could have delivered the message in a much rougher manner.

Ben, Thanks for the data, I did not read/think of using Ramshot Big Game poweder for the load. Very usefull! post script: checked out the load data site and signed up
-
on a side note: I got very lucky and picked up a few pounds of powder and even rounded up some mag primers, if the stars align just right I could make a few that will act as a good starting point. happy huntin' all y'all

I will give this thread one more day to soak. Any info would be great, it is a relatively new caliber and there is not a ton of data out for it. thanks

11 Burros were found shot. I have to wonder the motovations for the actions. This should be a hotly debated issue as we all wait for the next draw and season to start. I for one am all for the extermination of feral and exotic animals, and the list is longer than my arm. Pigs are everywhere from swamps, deserts and islands Rats, dogs, chickens = same and even the romatic mustangs and burros. don't even start with the seeds, weeds, and creepy crawlies, think killer bees and fire ants!

no matter a persons stance on the law. The law broken and there is five grand to help find the people responsible. I recall someone shooting a hole in the windshield of a working ore truck south of Tucson and some of us know who is still paying for those actions, this may work in the same way.
-
The pic of the bodies is pure gold for the antis. A few years ago I was on the Picacho Peak Range in Southern Cal. and could not get over seeing 18 burros from the road, of course didn't see any deer or big horn but those are not connected at all!
-
Dang! just spent some time looking through the pages here and there is allready a thread on the proposed changes to Wild Horse and Burro Act. Makes this a thread a little worthless, but... someone was making a big statement by the dropping those burros.

All good posts: This year I used "Rusty's" out of Springerville AZ. I was very impressed. All of my meat was coded as a group, very cleanly packed and the price was better than me spending the time to do it. It might matter that this was an elk and not everyone wants to butcher three hundred plus pounds! I didn't. I would add that this is a long standing shop. I do not know the present opperater outside of one job but the previous butchers were pretty close family friends. I have heard a few stories of how a customer had expectations of "X" amount of pounds and must have been ripped off( but they weren't). I know that it does happen, hopefully it was just a case of "high expectations" Thanks,

I think a little of both, maybe about the same numer of great racks but with a few more folks sharing the wealth on-line. happy hunting.

I just started to use a falling block rifle and love it. I am curious if anyone likes to use them in the field. thanks
-
Thanks for that, but I am set up for this year. I will be packing a M77 in .338. You know the mantra "I spent all of my money on wine, women, and guns the rest I just wasted! ( I gamble too, with the AZ G&F )

Glad my pain warms your heart. At least when the results do go up I can quit the dang waiting! I grew up in Springerville/Eagar and had a friend whose Dad was named Lark couldn't be the same guy?
-
I was at Murhy's (Tucson) last week and I could not help but look over a couple of Ruger No. 1s on the rack: .300 Win and a .375 H&H. I have a bull tag for the fall and either one would be big time elk medicine. Now I just have to quit buying gas and start saving for steel!
-
Lark, you want your hook back? cuz I took it all the way to the gills! I was on the speed dial while I was reading. I hope someone puts up a trail cam on the G&F so we all know the exact moment that those tags start to move.

I like the size and weight of the little low wall, but I am not sure that I could go without the security of a quick follow up shot. As the case with most hunters I do everything I can to get the job done with a single well placed, and well executed shot, but I wonder how it would feel to go "without a net" up one the high wire.
