nothin for Scout'm or I. looks like we will try for an Oct left over tag and use our back up 23 NM tags. -
OK - you guys are KILLIN ME. let me say again for the record, I DO NOT feel slighted. I am NOT cryin'. I am NOT bellyachin'. I am NOT irritated. I DO NOT have sour grapes. In fact I congratulate the winners and hope they all harvest booners. also, I completely understand and appreciate the good use the money is put towards. yes it is like the lottery. a non resident could buy a ticket and win but the money from all the other non residents stays right here in AZ. yes I was a little surprised to see 6 of the 11 winners were non residents. this made me wonder a couple of things. 1) is the primary purpose of the raffle to generate money? if so that is fine and they are doing a great job. if not, what is the primary purpose and should something be changed. 2) what peoples thoughts were about the Super Raffle vs the UT Sportsman's Permit raffle which is only available to UT residents. 3) what were other peoples thoughts about 6 of the 11 winners being non residents. that is all. thank you and good night lucy.

Come on Casey - you know who has the better athletic department. if not I will remind you (see #10 vs #24). http://nacda.cstv.com/

hope nobody plans on hunting solano or redondo canyons this year.

I called the bank last night and my checks had not cleared. I dropped my apps off the day before they were do.

as stated, you really do need to see which one fits you best. I have a friend who used the Minox one day and sold them. I also have a friend who used the 15X Fujis for one day and gave them to his son. They just didn't fit them and they got headaches from looking through them for an extended period of time.

that is a sweet spot you have set up there. -
DesertSheep was correct in what he stated in his post. Coues deer hunting is not as popular to NM hunters as mule deer hunters. Because of this, there are not that many NM residents who apply for coues deer hunts and the tags are left over and go to the non residents who do apply for them. I think I remember from the NM draw odds stats from last year that zero NM residents applied for the 2nd whitetail hunt in unit 23. I am sure the same was true for this year and thus the reason why there are quite a few non residents heading to NM to hunt coues deer in unit 23 this Nov. Personally, I do not believe too many AZ tags are given out to non residents. To the contrast, I agree AZ has gotten tighter towards the non residents with increased fees, max 10% cap and requiring the purchase of a license in order to apply. Are we worse than some western states? Maybe but probably not as bad as others. Have you ever noticed the non resident fee for sheep in NM? $3K. That is more than double AZ's cost of $1,400.

Terry, I noticed your response failed to answer some of my questions. As you are a professional guide I can see and understand your opinion. If I was in your shoes I would want as much money going to investing and protecting the resource I rely on to support myself. I no doubt agree that the money is put to good use. I only question whether the Super Raffle's primary purpose is to generate money. If it is than they are doing the right thing. If it is not than I think the people in charge of the raffle should revisit how they are administering it. You are correct in that your ticket had just as much chance as the other peoples. You personally did not have just as much chance as someone else who maybe purchased 2 or 3 tickets. Once again, I do not know how my post was taken as being "slighted". I most certainly do not feel that way. I am surprised at your response about NM, WY or UT hunters. All you have to do is go back and look at posts in the Hunting NM forum and you will find numerous comments about NM hunters questioning the number of non residents hunting in their state. Specifically, why they allow 22% to go to non residents while AZ only allows 10%. They can thank USO for that one. I personally had a cousin in UT who didn't talk to me for several months because he was so ticked when I drew and antelope tag on my third year of applying when he had been applying for many more years than that. I guess one of my last points and questions is if AZ has deemed it appropriate for the max number of non resident hunters to DRAW tags is 10%, why is it okay for 55% of the raffle tags to go to non residents?

So I do not quite get how my post was seen as cryin' or bellyachin'. Isn't one of the purposes of this forum to generate discussion? That is what I was trying to do. How is stating my opinion and asking legitimate questions cryin' or bellyachin? I sent my money in and knew well ahead of time that the odds were slim. I logged in and entered my credit card number just the same. But as an AZ native and someone who personally believes there is something wrong with 6 of the 11 winners being non residents, I think I am entitled to my opinion without being called out as a cryer or bellyacher. In fact I would still have the same opinion even if I had been one of the winners.

so 6 of the 11 winners were non residents? what does everyone think of this? congrats to Eric on his sheep tag. does anyone know how much money the Super Raffle generates compared to before the Super Raffle went into place? In '06 the Super Raffle generated $146,600 for the sheep tag. How does this compare to the money the sheep organization raised when they handled the raffle themselves? What about elk? Last year the Super Raffle generated $150,340 for the elk tag. Before the Super Raffle did the G&F give raffle tags to both RMEF and AZ Elk and how much money did they generate on their own? another question is how many Optics packages were donated by Swarovski prior to the Super Raffle? Was it more than one? If so that has to be considered. what do people think about how they do it in Utah. Tickets are only $5, they are sold only to residents and you have to pick which species you are going to apply for because you only get 1 ticket. no offense to the non residents, congrats on your tags but I personally have a slight problem with over half of these tags going to non residents. also, I am not sure but I think there is no limit to the number of Super Raffle tickets a person could buy. This does not make it an even playing field between the average joe and the more wealthy. I know people will argue this point and say it is not about money but I am of the belief that money is the root of 99.99% of decisions. There is no way AZ would move to a resident based, single entry system like UT because it would result in a significant financial loss. is the primary purpose of these raffle tags purely to generate money? I can see and thought the primary purpose of the auction tags were to generate money but would not think that was the primary purpose of the raffle tags. seems like the current system is a little flawed to me. THOUGHTS???

that is what is referred to as MAKIN' BACON

congrats to the Beavers and the PAC10. I am not positive but I am pretty sure OSU was undefeated in post season games. started out with a 1 hit 1-0 victory over Michigan and went on from there. Pretty amazing after having a losing record in the PAC10 and barely squeaking into the post season in the first place. Also amazing to repeat as national champs after losing 7 of 8 position starters to MLB.

I could be wrong but I have been to Cabelas several times and the 'Outhouse' a whole lot and it seems to me Sportsman's has slightly better prices on guns.

Scout'm and I drew 23 WT Nov 10 - 14. It was our 3rd choice. Hopefully we will find 'em again this year. We did not have much success last year on our scouting trips. Good luck to all!

maybe someone could recommend to the NM G&F that for next year they advertise they will have the results available by June 22. internally they could target June 20. then when they post the results early they would have gradual traffic on the web. granted, once posted, word will spread quickly but that is a little less immediate as everyone, their dog and grandma hitting it on and off all day on June 20. just my $.02

leave it to a newbie. check this link and notice which school is number 17 and which one is 27. also keep in mind after CWS points are added the school in 17th place will be moving up where. Nice to see a Mountain West school in there at 26. http://nacda.cstv.com/

Unhappy with my new coues mount
SunDevil replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
as AZ P & Y stated - it is all in the forms. there are a lot of forms out there and each taxidermist has their own favorites. I know my taxidermists only uses 1 or 2 different forms. he will get different poses but they are all from the same 1 or 2 makers. some other things regarding taxidermy work are: one, many taxidermists are moving to building the forms up with clay to provide more facial character. second, it is my understanding that after a cape is glued on, it shrinks. if the taxidermist pulls the cape tight during the gluing process, any 'character' that may exist will get pulled out (kind of like a face lift). I know the taxidermist I use is very careful to not use to big of a form or pull the cape tight during the gluing process. I am guessing the second mount is from a different taxidermist. I do agree with you. The mount you are talking about does have the eyes looking forward more. it also appears the form that was used has more of a rounded face to it than your other mount or from the field photo. Don't really know what you can do about it other than ask and see what the response is. Too bad you are not completely happy with it because that is a sweet buck. You are the one that is going to be looking at it every day and need to be satisfied with it. Let us know and good luck. -
Scout'm was out last weekend and saw a couple of bucks sporting nubs.

despite popular belief, it should be noted that you can glass game up using 15s without having them mounted on a tripod. yes it is more difficult but has and can be done. if the animals are far away you might not see them or if you do you probably will not get enough clear detail to make out bucks from does. if due to unique circumstances, getting on a tripod is not possible, find a place where you can rest both elbows on your knees. this should only be done short term. if you are going to be in a spot for awhile, break out the tripod. I also know a couple of guys that use walking sticks. the sticks have a hole in the end that their binocular tripod mount fits into and it is all set up to be right at eye level for them. once again, a very good short term solution to breaking out a tripod.

as Doug mentioned, there is a book called The Blue Book of Gun Values. It is updated every year and costs about $30. You can gind them at the gun shows. Sometimes you can even find used ones. Other gun websites include Auction Arms and Guns America. If you are serious about selling your guns I would be careful in asking the prices that people on the internet ask. In my opinion, the majority of the people listing guns on the internet are dealers that have their own shops. They are looking to get retail for their guns, have big inventories and can afford to sit on guns for awhile if they do not sell. Hopefully you will be able to find some true auctions for the 2 guns you are looking to sell and will be able to see what the market value for them is. Good luck. Send me a pm about the 20 gauge when you decide what you are going to be asking for it. I will be needing some youth guns in a few years. 870s tend to kick pretty good though. Chris.
