Mullin's Got it done in a big way!
SunDevil replied to matthewp45's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Jim - a huge thanks to you and your hunters for sharing all of this with us year after year. Please do not allow a few bad apples to ruin it for the rest of us. we greatly appreciate seeing the pictures and reading the stories shortly after the bulls have hit the dirt and not having to read about it in a magazine or on another site months and months later when we may have a hard time remembering and might say to ourselves, "oh this is that bull that everyone was talking about on the internet 7 months ago that I never got to see pictures of". Congrats on a great bull and a job well done. thanks for sharing and keep the stories and pictures coming. Chris. -
you got some pretty sweet spots pegged for your trail cams. looks like you have some decisions to make. if these are private spots you may want to look at harvesting the oldest ones first and letting the others grow. I know a guy last year that couldn't decide between two bucks. he took the one he thought was older. it scored 111. he drew the same unit this year and is going back in after the other one. hopefully it is still out there. he has not found it yet. looks like that NT is still a little young and in a year or two could be an absolute toad. I am sure he would be very tough to pass up this year if you had him in your sights but something to think about.

do you have a rifle tag?
-
What weird stuff have you glassed or happen well glassing for game?
SunDevil replied to seek100plus's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
glassed up an owl once and swore it was a mt lion. faces looked almost the same. how about two ears behind a rock that I thought were from a deer and then find out they were from a jack rabbit. -
Anyone use a barrel donut/deresonator?

New Mexico Speed Goat (short story update)
SunDevil replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
nice goat - gotta be careful of sharp knives -
so because he put his blind up first means he has first dibs? what if you went in there friday morning and were the first one in and set up your own blind?
-
can't imagine you would get much help for that hunt on this site. are there no CA hunting sites you can solicit on?
-
come on GOULDS TURKEY TAG!!!
-
him? good luck on THEM!!!
-
Jake - that is cool. I guess I did not know you had a 3 year old. my daughter just turned 4 and she is chomping at the bit to go hunting with dad. I don't think she has any idea what she is getting herself into. maybe you, mark and I could take the little ones out some time to go run around the desert. it was good to run into you at eegees. I was just there today. uumm - tangerine breeze.

Dustin - you are right on - Dec tags are extremely overrated!!! keep putting in for Oct hunts. better yet, hang up the rifle and switch completely to archery hunting.

I'd like to start a debate.....about points....
SunDevil replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in The Campfire
folks east of the rockies count all points. thus the deer in your picture would be an 8 pointer. people in the west say 3x3, 3x4, 4x4, etc. historically, eye guards are not included. I would guess this is due to most of the deer being harvested in the west in the old days were mule deer and they typically do not have very big eye guards, if at all. -
both you and your boy should whack the first bucks you see with bone in Aug. help to minimize congestion and traffic for the rest of us with those Dec tags. remember, the Dec hunt will now be the 4th rifle hunt in that unit so the bucks will have been hammered pretty good and pickings should be slim.

last month a couple of G&F guys were fired upon from drug runners down in 36A
-
I could be wrong but I believe many years ago the G&F transplanted some rocky mtn mule deer down south and they all died. I believe it had something to do with their need for more frequent water.

thanks for sharing. brings back some great memories.

probably some things that are more important is 1) do you want a light rifle or do you mind lugging a heavy gun around? if it does not matter than you can get a heavier, bigger chambered gun that will have less felt recoil. if you want a light gun than you need to go with a smaller caliber otherwise you are going to get beat on at the range. 2) are you going to reload or are you going to be buying factory ammo? can you afford expensive ammo? if you are going to reload than no issues but if money is tight than you will probably want to think about 7mm mag first, 300 wm 2nd and 300 wsm/300 rum last (cheapest to most expensive ammo). if you buy a new gun you are going to want to break it in properly and find out what rounds shoot best in your gun. this is going to take some ammo which is going to cost some money. good luck. I have a 7mm mag and have killed many animals with it. I also have a 300 wsm and am very happy with it. However, I know many people that have 300 wm, 300 rum, 30-378 and love them. as long as it shoots good it probably does not matter that much.
-
300 ultra mag - get a muzzle break and a really good recoil pad. 150 grain bullets smoke out of those.

do you remember what the name of the hunter was?
-
have you ever found any of his sheds? nice pics - toad for sure.
