MI man fined and revoked for killing elk too close to homes
SunDevil replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
last time this topic came up I went to the guides website and he had a couple pics of the bull on his front page. will that help him gain financially? -
all things considered - we had a great weekend. phil had a chance at a really big buck and wasn't able to connect. we were on a ranch that none of us had ever hunted before. this was a self-guided hunt. the moon on thursday night did not help out the glassing friday morning and then the wind blew in friday afternoon and blew very, very hard for 2.5 days. monday was a very nice day but tuesday morning had us locked down in a fog bank for 1.5 hours. by the time it cleared, everything had bedded down for the morning. the picture of the bedded buck had double split eye guards. you can see the split on the right eye guard but not the one on the left. the one on the left is actually a 2 - 3 inch fork. more to come in mid jan.

anyone seen any big mulies in 35A?
SunDevil replied to schmalts's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
good luck!!! I remember the guys from last year saying this turned out to be a tough hunt for big mulie bucks. -
yes - it is on the east side of the rincons. I am not sure if it is in the saguaro national monument - east or not but you start your hike/climb from happy valley to get up to it. I knew a couple of guys that hiked up to it back when I was in high school.

they say there are as many deer in PA that are hit and killed by autos every YEAR than there are in the whole state of AZ.

Good luck to you Josh. Several of us are also heading down there on Thursday. We are coming back on Tuesday with additional opportunities to return in Jan during the peak of the rut. looks like there may be a little weather coming through on Sun - Tues. I know of a 118" buck that was taken down there the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Whos going to a bowl this year?
SunDevil replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
yep - hard to put a winning season together when 2 of your starting offensive lineman are converted defensive lineman. anyway - what is the saying? even a blind squirrel.... finally ended a 9 year bowl drought. tough game in vegas for sure. come on basketball season!!! -
first you have to cut the lower jaw off. then try to get as much meat off from the skull as possible. also get the brain matter out. then it is just a matter of boiling it in a pot for about 4 hours. adding dish soap helps cut the grease. you can also soak the skull in water for like a week and it will loosen everything up so you can get it off and has about the same effect as boiling. you want to make sure you get all the brain matter out of the skull through the spinal cord hole as well as all the cartiledge out of the nasal cavity. finally, go to a beauty supply store and buy some hair bleach. it costs about $8. mix the two compounds together and brush it onto the skull. dont get it on the antlers. let it sit in the sun for a couple of hours and then rinse it off with water. you will be good to go.

Stinging and Biting Critters
SunDevil replied to Mr. Jonathan's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
oh - they are there. I have had close encounters each of the last 3 years. this year it was with a buddy on an archery antelope hunt. last year it was on my oct rifle coues hunt. 2 years ago it was on a coues scouting trip in sept or oct. I hate snakes. my mom and dad have had 2 in their garage in the last couple of months. -
are you seeing them in 33?
-
Ernie - you need to get a semi-automatic predator rifle!

Why do we hunt Coues?
SunDevil replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
couple of things - IMO 1) they are the grey ghost - it amazes me how they can disappear in a second and/or appear out of nowhere. 2) their venison is far superior to carp. 3) they don't call it poor man sheep hunting for nothing. short of drawing an az sheep tag, this is the closest most of us will get to sheep hunting. the terrain they inhabit is not as extreme as sheep but they are smarter than sheep. 4) other than carp - it is what we have. chances of getting a trophy coues are far greater than a desert carp. 5) what else would we do? fall is overseeding season for most of the golf courses. -

Unit 33 late nov/early dec.
SunDevil replied to codyhuntsaz's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
"2 previous hunts"? try 5. by the time your hunt rolls around there will have been 1 archery hunt, 2 youth rifle hunts and 2 general rifle hunts. best bet is to try and get 1+ hour in and away from the nearest road. -
this is 100% true!!! I saw in a phys directory once an OB/GYN doctor by the name of Harry Beaver.

I would say MX for coues also. -
here are a few more tidbits about the lucky bean: 1) a certain rabbit slept through his alarm opening morning and wasn't able to make it to his desired spot for opening bell. a couple nights later, a certain other camper was crawling into his sleeping bag and discovered his alarm clock was missing. several futile minutes were spent looking for it and finally an alternative alarm was found to use for the next morning. the next day it was discovered to have been unknowingly loaned to a certain rabbit. no worries - just glad to know I wasn't losing it. 2) after first obtaining the bean, a certain rabbit popped it in his mouth and started to suck on it. fortunately it did not taste good and was spat out when asked if they were safe to eat and the answer by all was 'don't know'. 3) mtn lion burritos were enjoyed one evening from the cat Scout'm harvested back in Apr. 4) I tend to spend most of my time glassing for deer and thus did not take many pictures on this hunt. here are a few that I did take: an interesting pine tree with a century plant growing out of it. probably do not see this very often. the biggest herd I glassed up on the hunt (15 total). my last day, afternoon buck I passed on. a small 2 pt I saw for the 3rd time. the previous two times were on scouting trips to the general area. I wonder if his 2 buddies made it through the season or if they are now packaged up in someones freezer? view of the last night of the season. 5) after several days of unsuccessful hunting, the lucky/unlucky beans were tossed into the fire in hopes of turning our fortunes around. 6) also on the last day, a solo drug smuggler was spotted going through a saddle at the top of the mtns. fortunately the rabbit did not encounter any of these when he was back in this canyon hunting during the previous 4 days. 7) Leicas vs Swaros - after hearing all about these Leica's that pretty much glass up deer on their own, the final count was (including the day before the season) Leicas = 3 bucks and Swaros = 10 bucks. this included a side by side comparison on the evening before the season opened with Swaros = 2 bucks and Leica's = 0 bucks. Is this covered under the Leica warranty? Future Leica owners beware! 8) A good time was had by all, the company was great, the food was great, the weather (except Sunday's storm) was great. The biggest buck found was an 86" (+/-) 3X3 that was originally spotted at 450 yards but worked around the ridge while I was procrastinating about throwing some lead at it or trying to find a way to stalk in closer. The buck was relocated a couple of hours later on the other side of the ridge but did not stick around long enough for more procrastination while deciding to throw lead at it from 370 yards or try to stalk in closer. 9) Upon returning home and reading the original Lucky Bean post, I noticed the spring draw results were out so I clicked over to see if I had been successful in my turkey application or not. I was PLEASANTLY surprised to discover I had been drawn for April 24, 35A Gould's Turkey. I guess that bean was lucky after all.
