drawn for archery bull unit 27 !!!!!, it has been 12 years
-
would this include unit 44 near Laramie, this will be my 3rd year, absolutely love it.
-
just a thought.... they cash the checks right away for everyone, that sits in an account for what almost 3 months before they have to send out refunds. I wonder if they make any money off the interest?? Would be a good reason to prolong the draw process just say 20,000 people put in for elk @ $120 = $2,400,000, if it collects a minimum of 4% interest/month is approx $230,000. I forgot how many resident applicants there were, I may be way off.

First deer with a bow!! The Coyote Buck....no meat
-
We have gone 2 years now, it is a blast. You can hold up to 5 tags (1 buck and 4 does) I get 1 buck and 2 doe tags, the meat is great. We utilize the Hunter Management Areas and go late in the season during the week, in 2 years we have not seen any other hunters just us and a ton of speed goats.

Well, I have been in this spot for about 15 years have missed 3 times. Finally connected at 31 yards as he was pushing seven does. I took the day off of work during the week to try get some alone time with the deer as there are a ton of hunters here on the weekends. I was asked to pick my step son up from school since I had the day off so I needed to be back to the truck at 2:30. At 1 I started to make my way to the truck and split from my other two buddies from our glassing spot. As I crossed into the next valley I spot a herd of muleys that had a 4x3, 2 3x3s and 30 does, I call my buddies and told them to make a B-line towards the trucks as I might be able to get them on these deer. Well as I walked through the final wash to the truck which was 70 yards away I get a call from my buddy that the 4x3 and 20 does are headed down that same wash. It is now 2:20 and pick some good cover in the wash and wait, 2 minutes go by and I see deer come in, I go to full draw on my knees as 7 does trot by me at 30 yards, I let the bow back down and wait....Another 2 minutes later here come more deer and this time I see antlers, I go to full draw and a few does move by me as antlers enter my shooting lane....I touch off the release and here the THWACK!!! He makes a quick u-turn and realize it was not the best shot I called my buddies and told them I had hit him but the shot was a bit back from his vitals and if they saw him to not push him. It is now 2:30 and I am suppose to leave I call my girlfriend up tell her what happened and she said she would go and get him from school and keep him at work. So now we watch the buck go over the next ridge just slowly walking with his head down, we wait until he crests the next ridge and then start to follow the blood trail which was decent at first, it was a mixture of blood and chewed up food when we reached the top of the ridge we sat there to give him some time to bleed and hopefully bed down. Worried that we would run out of light and lose him to the coyotes we moved on with two people glued to the blood trail and two people glued to the horizon to watch if we push him further. We followed the ever decreasing blood trail for about a mile and a half finding 2 seperate spots where he had bed and my arrow at the first. Where he had bedded had two good puddles of blood so he was bleeding from both sides but following the blood trail we found just 1/4 drops every 10 to 15 feet and now it was pitch black, afraid to push him even further we backed out. The next morning we hiked back to the last drop with our flashlights and waited til we had good light, we followed the blood another 130 yards to where another bedding spot was from here I started looking around and there in front of me I see ribcage and then antlers The coyotes feasted and ate every bit of meat even his nose and eyes !!! I cut the head off tagged it and strapped it to my pack, At least I recovered something. Here are a few picks.....Hes not a monster but I thought he was a great first deer with a bow, check the eye guards, 3" long for a desert muley.

we left at 7pm and came back at 6 am and that is how we found him, it was also quiet when we hiked in so they had already been done for some time. we have a fox pro so after Jan we will see what we can call in out there and get some revenge, we will see what my 300 RUM will do at 100 yards or less actually I have built an AR with some 50 grain varmit grenades....we'll see thanks for the comments I am still excited

I shoot 175 Berger VLDs and ended up with 84 grns of RL-22, Fed 215 @ 3150 fps. I have a Savage 116 with a 24" barrel, had issues with slower powders like Retumbo, H1000, and IMR7828. Went to the RL-22 and I have shot a 3 round best @.625" This is what I will use on my speed goat hunt in WY in 6 weeks....can't wait!!!!

Reloading nickle brass cases
azrcks replied to seek100plus's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
i have reloaded these as well but stopped. issues i had with it was that the nickle plating would chip off around the edge of the neck (very small pieces) and would end up in the dies, I also heard of this same issue when you shoot with small bits of nickel plating following the bullet down the barrel and scratching the bore. Just a thought. I have probably 300 30-06 nickel plated cases if anyone wants them in the Tucson area. -
It is kind of frustrating. Wyoming has a sweet system....it is organized, all online, and they tell you the draw results will be available on a certain date at a certain time and that is it. I still don't understand why they cannot have a decent online system here ???

OK, so here is what I got. Savage 116 300 RUM. A Boyd stock bedded and added a dowel to hold it together, muzzle break with a limb saver pad, and a reworked 2.5 lb trigger. Currently I robbed my 4-16x42 Monarch off another rifle just to go out and shoot. I am getting ready to buy the 5-20x44 or 6-24x50 Monarch for it, I just love those scopres. I bought the Rem Power Level 3 Scirocco 180 gr to see what the "punch" would be and pleasantly surprised that thr recoil was like shooting my .06. I have bought a stock pile of brass, dies and Berger VDL 175 grainers, should be fun. On another note I have access to a complete machine shop so in a few hours today I built me one of those "gun claw" . Seems be work sweet can't wait to give it a try soon. 300 RUM compared to my 30-06 the rifle the rifle with my own version of "the claw"

Out on the HAM hunt and spotted him about 100 yards in front of us. We had the wind in our face gusting pretty good and I was able to head him off and and get a 30 yard shot. I did not fill my Javelina tag but I would trade a smelly Javelina any day for this.
-
I think I got a good deal, I worked for Tucson Taxidermy for 7 years, so the I traded $250 and two coues deer mounts. So can't tell you what the actual value is.
-
I will be talking to Amanda and get these kits added to the store and then we can discuss specifics, thanks for your comments. BTW I can also do the same designs or new ones out of stone like flagstone....just another thought!
-
Since I did not judge him well at 580 yards, I decided to just do an antler mount. I have access to a waterjet cutter so I designed this and used some "hair off" javelina skin on the skull cap.
-
Copper would be sweet, do you like the AZ plate ? what if any words would you want? My dad has experimented with copper patina (if I spelled that right?) I will do a sample and post it up.
-
thanks, here is the other broadhead design, BTW that is "hair off" javelina skin on the other mount. Like I said before the broad head mount is not complete yet, a different set of antlers are going on that. The ones in the pic will be on a shoulder mount that I am doing. As far as the writing I can do anything and shape.
-
I will PM you, the design can be ANYTHING you can dream up! We are doing another mount of a boe kill where he wanted a muzzy broadhead shape, I post a pick but is not done yet.
-
That is a manfrotto QD plate, atleast the one for the manfrotto I have.
-
thanks, yeah he's columbian named Ozzy

Catch Us If You Can..... my 75# PSE Mach-X can easily catch a Mathews and is WAY more compact in size (not in width but all other dims) On another note the absolute smoothest recoiless bow I have ever shot was a Browning Illusion.
-
cool thread...this was my most productive year ever....way fun 1st bow kill Jan 08 Javelina 1st Antelope in WY with buddy George in Sept 08 580 yard shot at this coues with buddy Lalo in Nov 08 Pompano and Yellowtail Tuna off shore in Rocky Point Nov 08

Kings Desert Shadow has the right tones for almost all of AZ.
