  1. G & F Commission meeting on May 11, 2012 includes a couple of items of interest about recent elk/antelope draws and the proposed Grand Canyon Watershed National Monument. Here's the link: http://azgfd.net/artman/publish/NewsMedia/Commission-to-meet-May-11.shtml Of particular interest on the agenda: A briefing on the 2012 elk and pronghorn online draw. A presentation on possible remedies for online elk and pronghorn draw applicants who were denied permits as a result of the recent credit card security breach involving a non-department payment processor for VISA and MasterCard. A briefing on the department’s analysis of the proposed Grand Canyon Watershed National Monument, and presentation of a draft resolution addressing overarching concerns regarding loss of multiple-use public lands due to special land use designations, including national monuments.

An awesome deal on some great glass! I would be interested but I already own the same binos and wouldn't even consider giving them up. Lee

    What do you all think

If you need further convincing I copied this from dictionary.com, it's the definition of a word pronounced the same as the common pronounciation for Coues but spelled differently, "c@@ze" "1. the female genitals 2. a girl or woman considered sexually [C20: of unknown origin] " I'm just saying "Coues Hunter" probably not so bad. Coues probably really bad!

    What do you all think

Might want to think real hard about naming your kid "Coues". I like it but let's face it kids are cruel and since most people don't know what the name means, most are just going to make fun of him. Congrats on your fifth.

    Thanks!

NO THANKS, I received one of these mags too. Realized that Chris Denham was involved and through it away. I won't support anybody who supported SFW's play to steal tags and profit. Won't be reading Western Hunter either, because it is also Denham's baby. Chris if you read this, I hope you understand how much respect you lost from me and others like me. I am super disappointed in somebody I used to have a lot of respect for. My .02. Lee

    Youth hunt help

Jake, Congrats on all the NM draws! You guys did really well. I don't know what time frames those NM hunts are but hopefully the jr hunts in AZ are still an option for your son. Sounds like a busy fall already. I feel just awful for you. Hoping to get my wife drawn for a good deer hunt this year, because as much as I am stoked about drawing an archery bull tag this year, I can't wait to go guiding her to her next deer. It is such a blast to hunt with family. Lee

    lucky draw!

Congrats to you and your son. I have never had the pleasure of hunting NM so I'm not much help there. Didn't I reply to your thread about putting your son in for an AZ deer hunt yesterday? If so, is the AZ hunt on hold now? Lee

    Youth hunt help

Jake, Kudos to you for taking your son hunting. I would not recommend waiting to build his bonus points to get him a tough-to-draw tag. I would say take advantage of his youth and start him on some hunting with reasonable odds of success to draw and tag out. Start the fire in him as soon as possible. Both 36A and 36B have junior hunts from Nov 23 to Nov 29. Hopefully this is late enough in Nov to work with your schedule. With only 150 and 125 tags issued respectively, these are a great draw and you can avoid the crowds with the 500 to 900 tags issued in those units in the general hunts around that time. Plus these tags are good for WT and MD which are both present in good amounts in both. Another bonus to this is that the license and tags are cheaper for youth hunts. All else fails look into 3rd general season WT hunts in the southern units that start Nov. 30th this year. Just my 2 cents. Hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck. Lee

coconino forest changes starting in may

Not exactly at least in the Coconino. Hear is a quote from "Record of Decision" dated September 28, 2012, "Motor vehicle use for the purpose of dispersed camping is allowed within 300 feet along both sides of 581 miles of designated road and along one side of 32 miles of designated road. These motorized dispersed camping corridors are shown in the Record of Decision Map Packet. The area open to dispersed camping totals an estimated 43,313 acres. Where dispersed camping corridors are not designated, Forest visitors may park up to 30 feet off the road edge to camp or to pursue other activities. The reason this decision allows parking up to 30-feet from the side of the road in areas without dispersed camping corridors is (a) to be consistent with adjacent national forests, ( to allow ample room for parking for all vehicle types, and © to limit motor vehicle impacts adjacent to the road corridor in undesignated areas." On the Kaibab in the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts it looks like all dispersed camping must be within 30 feet of an "designated open road" and it does not look to me like the North Kaibab Ranger District has finalized their plan unless I misread. Lee From this I take it ,along any open road ,as long as your vehicle is parked no more than 30 ft from the road edge, your camp can be where you want it. Since I will be hunting on the Coconino this Sept. that's the one I have studied the most. On the Coconino at least, I believe you are correct. There are some areas (dispersed camping areas on designated roads) where camping will be allowed to within 300 ft. of the centerline of the road, but most of the camping will be probably be within 30 ft. of the few smaller roads that remain open. Unfortunately for me the one road I have historically camped next to is completely prohibited for motorized vehicle travel. Guess I have to find a new spot. One of my worst fears in these changes is something I experienced bow hunting in Maricopa County's White Tank Park in areas where motorized vehicle travel was strictly prohibited. I would climb in the dark to the top of the peaks only to be passed by a fleet of trucks and quads just before I topped out. The county did not have enough man-power to patrol and cite all those yahoos so those of us who followed the rules just had to grin and bear it. I hope the Coconino does a better job of enforcement even if they don't change these rules. Lee

  18. The commissioners have decided to come back and create a position statement against this proposal and it was suggested that we should all make our voices heard and Commissioner Davis stated he believes the Congress should again start legislation to take this power away from the President, even though he feels that it would fail in the Senate. I will be anxious to see the position statement on this one. Lee

coconino forest changes starting in may

Make no mistake they will ticket you. They are enforcing similar though slightly more stringent rules in the Kaibab forest around Williams aleady. I really expect them to warn a lot of people initially but if you are camped in an unauthorized area I bet they will give you the choice of moving camp immediately or being cited.

coconino forest changes starting in may

Where I am hunting on my archery bull hunt this Sept. is entirely within the Coconino. I am also more than a little unhappy about the changes. I dislike that if the road is not on the map you can't use it. One issue that I haven't heard anyone mention is if you intended to camp off a road that no longer is on the map (closed road) then you can't legally have a "motorized dispersed camp site" there even within 30 feet of the road because you can't use the closed road to access the camp spot. Also the area I intend to hunt will not be an area where you can use a vehicle to travel off road to recover the downed game. My favorite camp site will now be illegal for me to pull a toy-hauler into and I probably won't be able to use an ATV to recover the bull if I get one. Looks like I will need to do some serious scouting of camp sites and access points.

how many points do you have?

I had 19 BP's going into this draw. I'll be at 20 for next year's draw. I am looking forward to the Bonus Point reports for 2012.

Credit Card Dishonored for no reason

Doug, thanks for posting that link. I really appreciate getting the info from the horses mouth if you will. Hopefully the word will get out to all about what really happened and AZGF's contractor is better prepared for the Fall draws.

    Post you results

I managed to get my results on the G & F site long enough to see I didn't get drawn for antelope with 19 BP's. But I did get Archery bull elk in 5A!!!! The same hunt I had 4 years ago! I hope to find the son of a monster bull I had a close encounter with last time. Kind of glad I didn't get drawn for both elk and antelope in the same year. I am really gonna put some work into this elk hunt this summer. Congrats to those who also got drawn and better luck next year to those who didn't. Lee
