Browning BAR mk3 heck's Canyon accuracy
DUG replied to Gut Pile's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I've hunted AZ with BAR's all of my adult life. 1st one was 270 Win. It killed about 17 elk and 5 antelope. Longest shots were 475 on an elk and 500 on an antelope. But most were 100 to 300. Retired that BAR and went with a BAR 270 WSM Shorttrac LeftHand eject. Have killed about 6 elk with it with longest shot about 575 and most around 400. Most of these were late cow hunts where elk were bedded on knobs and no way to get too much closer without losing sight of them. Put a Leupold scope on it and you are good to go. Or Vortex if that's what you are into. Post up a pic of whatever you get. -
Just watched a buck early this morning on South facing slope. About 1/2 hour later he moved to North side and then came back to south and bedded.

Nice! Congrats!

If the hiking gets dicey then I unload the chamber, especially if the kids are hunting.

Nice work! Congrats!!!!

As always, great pics!!! How about pics of new pup?

Palm Springs has an airport. Way closer than Ontario. Pretty sure he would have to fly on American Airlines.

I've probably wore this into the dirt. BUT........the best part of javelina hunting is not getting one.

On the episode of "FBI" last night the story line was similar. Guy killed his kids then the wife. Pops gas line off and house blows up. Camps out in the woods at a favorite place and leaves the dog with the vehicle. He's nowhere to be found. Eerie!

I'm quite sure he's dead. How could you live with yourself after doing that unspeakable crime? He would have goofed by now if still alive.
-
Thanks for clarifying. He lived near the one with a G when he did his despicable act.

There's 2 Sah/guaro Highs. One with a G in Scottsdale and one with an H in Tucson.

I figure the later you mail them the better chance they'll just put them on top of the existing pile. Lol!

I mailed for my leftover archery tag on the 22nd which is about when they updated the list the 2nd time. The 3rd time they updated there were no tags left for hunt I put in for. I got tag 1536, or somewhere around there, out of 1600.

Gun and shot legalism
DUG replied to Big Tub's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Why go looking for a ticket? Just shoot steel or whatever non-toxic shot is legal for waterfowl. When we used to pond jump ducks while we were quail hunting we made sure no lead was on our person just in case we got stopped. And to what you said about them checking the carcass for lead. We never got checked. There's always a gray area with most things hunting. Just my opinion! -
Anything you are accurate with. I've seen javis shot with wadcutters, hollow points and everything in between. I think I'm more accurate at 40 yds. with my bow than my handgun. I like a shoulder holster for 6 inch plus guns. Too much weight on the hips makes for a shorter day.

Congrats! I enjoyed following your story! Great job!

Hope you named him the Cholla ram.

I would get a Hornady reloading manual and pick out a load from there. If you using a cowboy action pistol maybe consider a .44 special load.

Got my 23 HAM in the mail on Wed. My 1st come / 1st serve archery leftover is showing in the portal.

Sausage fest! Oh wait, not quite the same thing. Ha ha!! Looks good!

Great story and great lesson learned about doing the right thing. I almost had this happen 33 years ago on a WT hunt in 23. Saw 2 bucks feeding. Shot at one. Saw 2 bucks running away. Shot at one of them but missed, thankfully. Went to spot of 1st shot and found buck dead. It went down so fast and never saw the 3rd buck with the other 2. Congrats on your buck. I keep telling people anyrthing can happen on a hunt and it does.
