    WWYD?

What would you do? A. Freshen up the salt and place your camera on the tree next to it. B. Say forget it and skip that spot this year. C. Steal their camera. D. Leave them a note and find out what they are scouting for. E. None of the above What about option "F": covertly check his SD card every couple of weeks; allowing you to put your camera somewhere else. :P Just kidding!!! :P I like option B or put your cam on a trail leading to that area. If this guy is getting good pics on his cam, he will probably be bummed if he sees another cam on the next tree over. Also, the more people traveling to that area may just bump the animals out of there; making it bad for both of you.

    Find the Mule Deer

I went archery deer hunting yesterday and found a bunch of MD does, but no bucks. This picture was taken at about 460 yards through the binos. Can you find all of them? Not too challenging, but fun.

Poacher Of the 2 Bighorns caught.

I feel the same as the rest of you...glad this terd got caught. My question is, how (if at all) does this effect the 2010 draw? I haven't looked at the regs in a while, but I think there are only 1 or 2 tags available for the unit. This guy killed 2. Will G & F keep the unit open?

    Find the Mule Deer

You guys were right! There are some bucks close by. Went back out to the same spot today and found four bucks this time and only one doe. Not bad for half a day. Also glassed up a bobcat. As we were packing up to relocate, my brother spotted this guy with the naked eye. Apparently he and the one doe were bedded just below us and we didn't know it. I'm guessing they were <200 yards away. My brother put a stalk on, but this 3 X 4 was too smart for that. Maybe next time.

    Shed?

I don't know if this is considered a shed, but I thought it was a pretty neat pickup; and the first one I ever found or seen. About a month ago I went out to check my camera and almost stepped on this tiny little tortious shell.

    Shed?

I brought the shell to Game & Fish this morning. They looked at it, said it was legal and let me keep it.

    Find the Mule Deer

You are all correct. There are six in this picture. There were two other does, just off camera, as well. I was surprised to find a herd of eight does and no bucks. Are the bucks hanging out by themselves this time of year?

    first buck ever

Nice buck! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one to pump some lead into the hills of unit 21. You know what I mean buglethemin. Congratulations to Rob on a nice buck and good job putting him on one in just a couple of hours.

Unit 21- HELP !!!... First time in Unit

I was going to suggest Pine Mt. as well. It's a Wilderness area, so you SHOULDN'T have any vehicle traffic. Enter from Dugas, but be prepared for a bumpy ride. Don't make the mistake I did by driving your truck to the boundary. It took about three hours to go six miles. Take a quad or horse. Getting there is rough, but it's scenic with plenty of wildlife. Good Luck!

    Callin Bears

For the price I would recommend the Primos Coyote / Bear Buster. I think it is about $10. Unfortunately, you can not find it any of the major hunting stores anymore. However, it is still available if you search for it on-line and I think through Primos. In August of 2008 I called in several bears using this call.

    First pics with Covert II

I set my camera out about three weeks ago and was pleased to find some deer and elk pictures on it yesterday. This is my first camera and so far I am very happy with it. The temps were 15 - 50 degrees and it still had 2/3 battery life. There were a total of 95 pictures; however I think the camera was going off when the wind was blowing the tree limbs.

    First pics with Covert II

No pics at night. The camera did go off in the infared mode on my first elk pic though. You'll notice this picture was taken just seconds before the one I already posted, so I wouldn't say night time.

    2008 season.. a year's review

I had a great year. Twelve consecutive days of it was spent on a bear hunt. It took much longer then I expected, but worth it in the end. Going into this hunt I was expecting and prepared to take a long shot. However I ended up shooting this big boy at about 15-20 yards. If the shot didn't kill him, then the tumbled down the hill probably did. He was on steeeep and rocky side hill. A buddy and I started skinning him out at about 9pm and didn't finish until about 1am. It was only 3/4 of a mile back to the truck, but we would have broke something (ie..leg or ankle) going down that hill in the dark. We drapped the hide over some brush, hung the meat in a tree and sacked out on the hill till the sun came up. It was toughest hunt (mentally and physically) I have been on, but VERY rewarding. I measured the skull at 20 3/4". Had a great Coues hunt as well. It was just as exciting as the bear hunt...but in a different way.

    so mad!!!

Check out this artical. Does anyone offer a sevice like this in AZ? By Jeanne Sager FORESTBURGH — When the bear lumbered past Bob Sipos’ tree stand, he thought he was ready. He didn’t know the shot would be the easy part. Sipos pulled back his bow and let the arrow fly, hitting the 410-pounder with what he thought was a good shot. Then he climbed out of his stand and went home. “I thought it was a great shot, but if it wasn’t, I wanted to give it a chance to lie down,” he said. Sipos called his brother and a friend to rejoin him on the spot in Forestburgh a few hours later on Monday evening. They soon found a few drops of blood and the broken arrow. But that’s it. The broadhead had broken off in the bear, and there was no more blood. Confused, the men went home. By morning, Sipos had a plan. He found the number for Deer Search, a non-profit run by volunteers whose dogs have been trained to track wounded deer. The program aims to reduce the number of deer wounded and then left to die in the woods by hunters. When it was founded in the late 1970s, it was the first of its kind in the country, an all-volunteer program with dogs that have been officially trained to remain leashed and track down wounded game. Today the dog handlers are officially licensed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), setting what they do apart from the illegal practice of “running” deer down with dogs. Not sure how the program worked, Sipos gave them a call. He found a tracker located in Dutchess County who was hesitant because of the long drive to Sullivan County but ultimately agreed to come. The tracker brought with him his dog, Jake, a dachshund trained to pick up the scent of a wounded deer and follow it straight to where the animal has stopped. This would be his first bear, but Jake’s handler was willing to give it a try. “I took the dog to where we last saw the blood, and he sniffed around for maybe about two minutes,” Sipos explained. “Then he just started going.” Jake led the men to a marshy area where Sipos said you could barely stand up. With the dog’s handler, he bent down and basically crawled through the sodden earth until Jake came to a halt – right in front of the dead bear. “It was unreal to watch him track that thing with no blood, just a scent,” Sipos said. “I just couldn’t believe it.” Sipos quickly contacted a butcher to ensure the bear meat could be cut up and put away before it spoiled. The cold temperatures from Monday night into early Tuesday afternoon when the bear was found ensured nothing went to waste, he said. He’s going to have the male bear full-mounted, expecting it to stand about 7 feet tall. Although he’s been hunting since he was 16, Sipos said this is his first bear take. He had a feeling he might see one when he settled in his stand. The site in Forestburgh is littered with obvious signs of bear activity, including telephone poles that have been clawed as high as 6 feet in the air. He’s not sure how long the bear has been in the area, although he’s sent the teeth off to the DEC to be aged to at least determine how old he was. Right now, Sipos is still coming down off the excitement – including the thrill of following Jake off into the woods. He says more hunters should take advantage of the service to ensure their game doesn’t go to waste and the animals don’t suffer. To contact the Mid-Hudson chapter of Deer Search, call 227-5099. The services are free – although donations are accepted – and available seven days a week.

That's a big bear! Does anyone know the score of the largest bear taken in AZ? State land and Res. land?

    another tag filled

Good job guys. Taking a buck like that on the last day (or any day) makes it all worth it. He's a beauty. I'm sure your friend is hooked now and can't wait till next season. I have no guess on the score....but he's got good mass, good main beams and great tines. Your friend should be very proud of himself. Great buck! It appears big bucks are being taken in all units. If you don't mind sharing...what unit were you huntin'?
