Looking to do a stock upgrade on my .270....is this a good one?
Viper posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I want to replace the factory stock on my Remington 700 XCR .270. I want an upgrade with bedding and floated barrel at an economical price. This one from Stocky's Stocks seems to fit the bill. Any input, advice...? https://www.stockysstocks.com/stocks-by-brand/bell-carlson/sporter-hunting-stocks/bell-carlson-alaskan-wilderness-mountain-rifle-remington-model-700-model-seven-7-stock-right-left-hand-available-new-models.html -
I have this setup. It works very well. It's not great for hauling out meat, but most of the time you pack what you can back to the truck/camp and return with a meat hauler anyways. The pack dilemma is an ongoing evolution, especially for pack/gear junkies like me. Over the years, I have gone from a small fanny pack, to a camelback, to Eberlestock X2, to Outdoorsman, now currently trying out the Kuiu 3200...which I really like so far. By the way, I still have all of these I also have a couple of meat frame packs. The Kelty Cache Hauler is a good one. It carries a load quite well...which is currently on sale at Sportsmans for $90. I have hunted with it with a small pack attached. Pretty lite setup. There are tons of options. It's best to get your hands on one and try it on with weight in it before you buy. If you have time, watch the forums.

Good to know. Thanks for the offer...I will most likely buy one to have on hand. Do you have the mechanical one for $50, or the digital one. The mechanical one gets good reviews over the last couple years. Thanks -
Backcountry Navigator for mapping/gps. Strelok for shooting/ballistics app.

I have one similar...Kelty Cache Hauler, frame only. It works great for hauling a load of meat. This one should be a good setup for the $. I think Sportsmans carries them. Make sure it fits you well, and has a good sturdy waist belt to support most of the load. Also, before you order this one, be sure it includes the pack bag.

Is it necessary to bed the recoil lug with a aluminum bedding block? Should I use lock tight on the bolts? -
Middle-upper price range...Outdoorsman, Kuiu 3200 or 5200, Eberlestock to name a few I am familiar with. You can typically find these for sale on forums for less $ than new...around $200 - $300. Depends on the size and features you want.

Now I need to find/buy a decent inch pound torque wrench. It's amazing how many brands get mixed reviews. It seems the Wheeler Fat Wrench quality has improved the last couple years.Any suggestions? -
Is that just for labor, or does that include the unit?

That's great results! Did you torque to spec, or make torque adjustments until the group tightened up? -

Thanks. I am just looking to make this rifle a little more accurate without much added expense, so I can stretch my effective range a bit...to 400 to 500 yards. I figure a decent stock and premium ammo should accomplish what I want. In the future, if I want a long range, custom, more expensive shooter, it will probably be a different caliber. For now, this one will do. -
I'm in the market too. I've been doing some research. It appears the options are buy from the big box stores for less than $400 or go with a high quality unit for nearly $1000.

Not to change the subject, but what type of liner do you use?
-
Might make a good huntin' rig. Should go anywhere.

The odds are pretty high that it will eventually be stolen...or burned in a fire. Are you willing to lose an expensive camera? Not me. I will stick with the < $100 cameras.

Holy Smokes!!! Those are some great animals she's taken! Kudos to her! Now I don't feel so manly

First, big kudos to you, and all the other women mentioned, for opening yourself up to hunting and the outdoors. I don't have daughters and my wife doesn't hunt. She is ok with me hunting and loves the meat. I have been involved with a lot of youth hunts, boys and girls, and a lot of large church campouts providing archery, shooting, nature hikes, campfires, etc... I truly see a difference between girls/women that hunt and spend time in the outdoors. They seem more in touch with reality, the REAL cycle of life and death, and have more confidence in themselves...stronger. I think it helps that young lady when the "wolves" start circling. I love it when a girl out hikes, or out shoots a boy. You can see the accomplishment in her face and posture.

This is a good deal!! I think I paid $400 for mine a couple years ago...without the extra barrel.

Leica 12x50 and Zeiss Diascope 65mm. I often leave the scope behind and carry a doubler to cut weight, except during scouting. Thinking of getting the Vortex 50mm so I am more apt to carry it. Not sure if it is worth it though.

Which factory ammo to extend range/accuracy of my .270?
Viper posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I know this has been discussed before but I'm having no luck searching. I have a Dec WT tag this year and want to maximize the potential of my factory Rem .270 xcr. I've used Rem core lockt, 130 gr for the past 5 years or so. I've killed 3 bucks at 140 to 300 yards, all one shot...dropped in their tracks. I want to extend my effective range to 500 yards. Although the economical core lockt has served me well, I realize I will need better performing ammo to achieve consistent accuracy at this range. I also realize most premium factory ammo will provide plenty of accuracy from a factory rifle. My main concern is terminal performance. In the brushy, steap coues country I hunt, it is imparative the deer drops in it's tracks. Cost is a slight concern, as I will shoot more if it doesn't break the bank. I can shoot the core lockts all day at $20 a box. I've done some research on the following choices: * Hornady 140 gr Interlock (I am leaning toward these...they are $25 a box and get great reviews on terminal performance). * Barnes Vor-tx TTSX (A lot of people like these) *Nosler Accubond * Nosler Partition I'm sure there are more so let me know.
