    World Record???

I also spent a lot of time in the late 80's in that area. The elk were thick in late summer; I could watch them for hours.

    phoenix ponds/golf course fishing

The only reason they caught your son is because you didn't learn him up in the art of stealth properly. Sometimes that dang kid thinks he knows it all and dad knows nothing...he learns slow sometimes.

    phoenix ponds/golf course fishing

Growing up in Sahuarita in the mid 80’s, golf pond fishing was the norm. It involved decoy cars parked in conspicuous spots, black clothes, laying in the low spots when the spot lights were on...good times! The fishing in the summer was usually great, some of the biggest bass I have ever caught. Some nights it was hard to cast without a hit. A couple years ago I got a call in the middle of the night. It was a police officer from a nearby town. Seems my son was not sneaky enough when he was at a golf pond. I guess I can't complain as that was the only trouble he got into with the law while in high school.

Call the coach of the Round Valley football team and see if he can send about 20 kids in return for a nice donation to the team.

    World Record???

Mormon Lake, Rodgers Lake, Sipes, Crosby Crossing, Beaver Head, Rodgers Marsh, Greens Peak, Open Draw, Augar Canyon...these are all places that elk use as large meeting venues...not hard to see 150+ at a time. However, it does seem that there are fewer large gatherings of elk in units 1 and 27 since the fire. Great pics, thanks for posting.

    Stuff handed down from parents/grandparents.......

My grandfather was a tool and die maker. He built fighter planes during WWII. After the war he moved to Flagstaff where he lived the rest of his life. He and a couple buddies got into reloading, but in the 40's it was not as easy to buy the equipment so he made most of his own stuff. I have homemade dies, presses, dribblers, trimmers, bullet pullers...the whole set up.

Recent Jaguar Pics and other critters down south

I know from talking to there field biologists, that camera theft is a huge issue for the study. They should not leave them more than 72 hours, else wise they are abandoned. I think that is the terms being placed on the rest of us.

  14. A visit to Normandy is on my bucket list. The sacrifice made by so many should be part of every Americans education. The debt we owe these men will never be repaid. Too bad we didn't send a president, who cares and respects the military, to the memorial ceremonies.

  17. I am all for heroic measures to return any of our troops...none of them are peons when defending country. However, this scum was not a troop. He made the decision to leave...should have suffered the consequences of his decision. If it adds any clarification or feel good, I spent the better part of 8 years as an Army Military Policeman. 5 of those years were in the 82d Airborne Division where a bad landing ended the Airborne portion of my service. I spent a lot of time as a lowly peon. They are all heroes. The point I was making is thatthe bad guys don't have to capture high ranking individuals. Any ol' troop will do. Thank you for your service to our country!

    Calling Elk, Good/bad Idea???

Good basketball players let the game come to them rather than try to dictate the game with their style of play. Good hunters do the same thing. When hunting, if the animals are vocal and responding to calls, then call. If they are not, you will not have much success forcing "your" style of hunting on the animals. As far as calling before the season, that happens a lot. Calling and spotlighting is a favorite pastime in many mountain towns.

    Luna/Big lake

I went to Luna on Sunday and Monday. A few bites, and one fish caught between several poles. Nice carry-over trout, but pretty slow overall.

    destruction of a beautiful spring...

Much of the water in this state is maintained for cattle. Deer, elk and other wildlife benefit from it. Without the cattle industry, and the millions they spend annually to make sure water is available, the wildlife numbers in the state would plummet. No doubt that cattle do change the landscape and vegetation, but so do other animals. Have you ever seen what happens to a pristine mountain spring with a bull elk taking his first wallow of Spring? I would argue that Spring is not destroyed, and it will recover. It is not likely that this recent visit by cattle is the first it has ever seen. That is a beautiful spring. I would bet that when a thirsty deer, elk or bear shows up they will still drink. They have coexisted their entire life with cattle...they do not know any different. Anyone that feels cattle push deer out of an area should avoid those areas with cattle. I myself have had a lot of success hunting amongst those delicious bovines.
