    Bigger gear for bigger animals

Good post killer. There is a lot that goes into recovering a bull. I agree with you about heavy gear, but there is so much more to it. Heavy arrow/broad head, quality bow, practiced-confident shooter, weather conditions, terrain, vegetation, clothing of the hunter, distance, angle of the animal and shot placement. This Spring a guy I know found a dead bull in 27. He made a post on here trying to find the hunter. He received over a dozen PM's from CWT members who lost a bull in 27 this past year...none of them were the same bull.

Awesome! Enjoy every minute. My youngest left today after a family Easter dinner for the last three weeks of college if Flagstaff. Where did the time go?

I just figured I would set it up in the back yard and have the wife start her usual rampage about nothing. If it stands up to her wind then I'm set to go. TJ Wow TJ...it won't be good if peg reads that!

I have positions open for this coming year. To get that type of money you will need a masters+ 36 units and 15+ years experience. If you only have your bachelors and are starting out the pay is upper 20's but the schedule is the same. Send me a PM and we will get you signed up.

    AIMS Testing

Sam, you are right on with this. Many (maybe most) schools write the IEP or 504 requiring the student pass the AIMS, then at the end of the senior year, if they have not, the IEP is changed. This encourages the students to take the test. Amazingly, many of them pass when they take it. Another practice that is common is doing an initial 504 placement at the end of the senior year, for a student who has not passed AIMS. This gets them around the graduation requirement. As presented at an administration conference two years ago, almost every kid has some form of a chronic medical condition. These include allergies, skin conditions, asthma or any number of other conditions. Any of these are adequate under section 504 of the rehabilitation act of the Americans with Disabilities act.

    AIMS Testing

You are so right about the lack of authenticity in the AIMS test. Furthermore, it is not just AIMS. In the last two weeks we tested our kids with AIMS, PARCC, and PISA. These are all mandated by state and federal agencies, yet the benefit to our students is negligible at best. We need a little more rancher mentality in our education system...any rancher will tell you that weighing your cows more often doesn't make the heavier. I am glad the testing season is over.

Although AIMS allows IEP accommodations, calculators are still not allowed.

What are realistic expectations for unit 1?

Last year bulls were everywhere, very active and aggressive during the first three days. After that, things slowed down, but we were still in bulls everyday. The last couple days things picked up again. In the first 3 days we called in a dozen bulls, with the biggest at about 320. We did work into some bigger bulls that were vocal, but not interested in our calls. I hunted all day long 10 of the 14 days. I prefer to get away from the roads and as a result only ran into one hunter out in the woods. There are plenty of hunters in the closer areas and those areas hold a lot of animals. I only saw one bull that would score above 400, but I did see a lot of "good" bulls. The majority of the bulls were 6 points, with many in the 280-300 range. 320-340 is a realistic bull for most hunters. Bigger bulls are a definite possibility, but they that a lot of work and a little luck. There are a lot of good posts through the years about unit 1. Do a search and enjoy. Good luck!

    Broad heads for elk, 2014

G5 striker did the job for me last year. Passed through and buried into the ground at the base of a stump. This was at 53 yards out of a 60 lb bow. I can switch between broad head and field point with no difference in flight.

Unit 1 Archery Bull tag 1st tag ever

Jim is correct. There are a lot of bulls in easily accessible areas, however, there are a lot of hunters also. If you don't mind hunting with company, you don't need to walk too far. However, if you get a mile or two from the roads, you can be all by yourself. Last year, I hunted 10 days, all day long. In that time, I ran into one other hunter in the field. I was working a bull in some thick stuff and the hunter came to see what was going on. He walked into the open at 25 yards, and then saw me. He waved and said "hello". The bull I was working thundered off. It was within about 50 yards. This hunter did nothing wrong, but I just don't do well in those situations. I am willing to hike past some bulls, and some hunters to have a place to myself. The post Coach made on this thread is great. He has captured the essence of the hunt, not just the kill and the score. Good luck on the hunt. You have drawn the best possible tag in my opinion. I will be up there for part of the season, just enjoying the experience.
