  1. Yesterday evening I had a meeting in Tucson. We needed some paint from wal-mart so I ordered it before the meeting and stopped by to pick it up afterward, about 8:00. This was the Wal-mart at Kino and I-10. As I pulled into the parking lot I was surprised by the amount of vehicles. I went in to get the paint and could not believe what I saw...it looked like black Friday. The shelves were being cleaned off, the isles were stacked full of palleted goods which were being looaded into carts as fast as they were dropped. I grabbed my paint and headed to the register. Most registers were open, but the lines were increadibly long...I was in one of the express lanes with 57 people in front of me! 40 minutes later I made it to the register. The cashier was very friendly but also stressed out from the crowds. I asked her if this was a typical Monday night; her answer floored me: She said it is the first Monday of the month and the government support checks come in. Most of the customers live in Mexico and have a P.O. Box in Tucson to get their checks. (This Wal-mart is close to the main Tucson post office) They come North on the first Monday, spend their check, and go home. In the parking lot I took a close look at license plates, sure enough, about 4 out of every 5 was from Sonora. This is your tax dollars at work. Essentially 40% of this money is borrowed from China and given to Mexico, while we are cutting essential services of our own people. Wake up America!

    Tease

I can almost feel my butt sinking into a bag chair while holding my fishing pole. There is a soft breeze coming across the water. The chair's cup holders have power bait on one Side abd a cool beer on the other...life is good! Bonecollector, thanks for the quick mental vacation.

Probably sick they didn't find this one

Great find! I love the picture of the little guy holding it. Nice to see him getting into the great outdoors at such a young age. That crushed nose should rekindle the discussion about lion kills.

Bighorns in the Catalinas and Mt. Lions

If we humans are going to inject ourselves into the interaction between sheep and lions, I think we should take it from the reactive (killing offending lions) to the proactive. The groups involved in this reintroduction should create a heard of tofu sheep. These will be much slower than the real sheep and thus should draw all the lions predatory intentions.

Triple Crown of Western Shed Hunting

I have found the triple crown before, but not in the same day. I would love to find an antelope sheath, but have never been hat fortunate. I have also found the triple shots of crown before. They are easier to find, but can mess you up...I still can only put together foggy glimpses of a night on Bourbon Street in New Orleans a few years back. From what others in our group tell me, I may not want to have total recall.

    Hey TJ!! DON'T FORGET!

Congrats to both of you. Just remember, that fancy new trailer is nice, but to really get the most out of it you need to hook it to the truck and pull it some where. Hope the two of you have a great day, and hope Peg enjoys the new fly rod!

Cats Have No. 2 Fan Base in Nation Posted on: May 5, 2013 in People & Places inShare Long a fixture of success on the court, a recent study by Emory University Sports Marketing Analytics found that the University of Arizona men's basketball fan base ranks No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the PAC-12. The study, conducted by Mike Lewis and Manish Tripathi, lists the top-10 fan bases nationally as such: 1.) Louisville, 2.) ARIZONA, 3.) Duke, 4.) Arkansas, 5.) North Carolina, 6.) Texas, 7.) Kentucky, 8.) Syracuse, 9.) Marquette, and 10.) Oklahoma State. Emory Sports Marketing Analytics based this study on a "revenue premium" method which attempts to predict revenue generation based on on-court success, i.e. winning percentages and NCAA Tournament advancement. According to the study, "the key insight is that when a team achieves revenues that greatly exceed what would be expected based on team performance, it is an indication of significant brand equity. The analysis therefore avoids bandwagon effects and gets at the core loyal fan bases." Arizona posted a 27-8 record (12-6 Pac-12) in 2012-13 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's West Regional semifinals for the second time in three seasons. Visit the official Arizona Wildcats website.

    Anyone know what these are?

You make it sound so bad. I once heard of a guy that loved fishing so much that he married his wife just because she had worms!

    Unit 1 archery bull

Just returned from 4 days of scouting, hanging cameras, and hiking. I was very disappointed at how dry much of the area is and how few of the Spring grasses had come in. The Eastern edge of the unit is very dry. A couple ponds that always hold water were dry. The highest parts of the unit look a little better, but still of concern. Areas that were thick with wheat, barley, etc last year show little or no sign of new growth this year. The orchard grass is starting to grow, but not like this time last year. I did see 6 bulls running together this morning. The smallest had about 24 inches of main beam. The two largest were big enough to get my heart pumping pretty good...well either the bulls or a pack full of cameras, steep incline, and 9000 feet...either way, I was using up some oxygen.

no hitter in game one. one hitter in game two and a three hitter in game three by d escobedo. pretty dominating. it would have been nice to see them put a few more runs across the plate but bring on KY for another home series. They had a good regional tournament. Hopefully they are peaking at the right time and will make another championship run. Many championships are not won by the best team, but rather the team who peaks at the right time and has the best tournament run. I don't think the 2011 team was the best team, but they dominated the entire tournament, and brought home the hardware. Hopefully Dallas can lead them to another one.

You are correct, the name changed to ASU in 1958, and since that time they lead the series 30-24-1. However, ASU was first granted university status by the State legislature in 1937. This was the result of an overwhelming vote and an campaign lead by Grady Gammage. Gammage had the foresight to realize this status was needed to be able to offer accedited graduate degrees. In the same year they received their initial accreditation as a university by North Central Association. The school retained the name of Arizone State Teachers College at Tempe, a name they had taken in 1929. From 1937 to present the series is lead by ASU 36-33-1. From 1929 to present it is lead by U of A leads the series 41-37-1. In 1945 ASU boasted 6 colleges and decided to change their name again to reflect there evolution beyond just a teachers college, and thus they became Arizona State College at Tempe. Although still not called a University, they did hold that distinction from the legislature and they were accredited as such by North Central Association. Since that time the series is lead by ASU 36-33-1. There are many ways to slice it, but back to my original point; the reason the overall series is lead by U of A is not due to all the games they won over Tempe Normal as was stated several times in this post. There are many places you can draw the line that will put either of the schools in the lead. Loyalties to one school or the other will dictate where each person draws the line. That is just one of the many things that makes this rivalry great!

    Wow 2013

Flatlander and other biased fans of ASU football (U of A fans are just as guilty of twisting the facts in their favor) often claim the U of A leads the series in football because they regularly bet up on the lowly Tempe Normal School. It makes them feel good and justifies the losing record, but it just is not true. The U of A leads the all-time series 47-38-1. When you take out the Tempe Normal Games, U of A leads the series 43-37-1. Prior to 1931 the two schools were not in the same conference because they were not comparable. In 1931 they both joined the Boarder Interscholastic Athletic Association, better known as thr Boarder Conference. This was the beginning of a schedule that ensured an annual matchup between the two schools. Since that time, U of A leads the series 39-37-1. Below are some facts about the rivalry. PAC 12 era 2011-2012 ASU 1 UA 1; PAC 10 era 1978-2010 ASU 14 UA 19 and 1tie; WAC era 1962-1977 ASU 13 UA 3; Boarder conference era 1931-1961. ASU 9 UA 16; Total in era of conference play. ASU 37 UA 39 and 1tie; The University of Arizona played Tempe Normal School only 5 times. TNS won 11-2 in 1899, UA won in 1902, 1914, 1915 and 1919 by a combined score of 112-0. There were no other meetings of UA and Tempe Normal School. The rivalry is a gret one, that I look forward to each year. However, if ASU fans want to brag, they need to limit it to last year or their dominance over the U of A while in the Western Athletic Conference. The rest of the hype is just a bunch of false, revisionist history. Sorry to rain on your parade, but those are the facts.
