186 7/8 nice deer -
It was a cold morning, but we had to get out for a little Christmas eve fun! My Dad, brother in law, two little brothers, and I decided to do some calling this morning here in southeast AZ. The wind was howling and it was COLD... at least by arizona standards. We made 4 stands. Called in a single on stand 1 and my brother (15) smoked her at about 40 yards. It was his first so... needless to say there was a little hoopin and hollerin. It was kinda like ... BOOM.. YEAH BABY...WOOOOOOOHHHH. My other brother (12) saw her coming in at about the 10 minute mark. But he never had a shot... she made her way towards us through a little wash and came out. My dad and I were up the hill a bit and never saw her. I looked at him at about the 20 minute mark and asked how long we had been sitting. About 10 seconds later he says COYOTE! I look and she is trotting from our left to right about 40 yards in front of the 15 year old brother. I barked once, she hit the breaks... and the rest was history! I started off with a couple of howls using one of Tony Tebbe's (predator university) old Cedar river Howlers... then did some jack rabbit with one of tony's old mini production cow horn tip calls. I don't really remember the name of it. But it got the job done this morning! Stand two, we called in a double but didn't see them until they were about 15 yards behind us... well we got a couple shots off as they came around the hill behind us ... but no connections. I'll tell you what, there is nothing like taking youngsters out. The 16 year old said as we were walking back from one of the stands, " Well... its over... I'm hooked!!" hahaha From left to right: Brooks 12, brother in law devin, Brady 15, Dad (barry), and my ugly mug!

I'm pretty sure you were in a forerunner or something like it... and i'm pretty sure it was red. I passed you in a blue jeep cherokee with a big sticker on the back just as you pulled off the road before you got to the 60. Didn't see your sticker until I passed you because it was on your windshield! just wanted to put a face with a name, and see if you did any good! Bryson

Oct 2011 Hunt - My First Writeup
Bryson Bendall replied to NewHunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Great write up Dale! It was a pleasure to be out in there with you guys! It doesn't get any better than hunting and being in good company! I think i had a smile on my face the whole weekend, even after I missed that nice one! Also wanted to say hello to TJ, I just stopped real quick and said hi when I saw your sticker, and I was glad I did! I was in the blue jeep...Hope we run into eachother again and have a little time to swap some hunting stories!!! Bryson -
Perhaps this has already but discussed/ posted on cwt.com before, but I haven't seen it so I figured I'd throw it out there for discussion. http://www.gardnerfiles.com/Arizona%203-Bar%20Study%203-g.pdf This is a link to some info on an ongoing study in the 3-bar wildlife enclosure out in unit 22. Basically, the wildlife biologists involved are focusing on the effect of predators on deer populations in general. The deer are living in the same, rugged, drought conditions as the deer on the outside of the fence yet are experiencing a considerably increased population and fawn survival rate. The ONLY variable that is different is the absence/presence of predators. Its a few years old, so if you know of some more recent info I'd be interested to see it! Maybe this is a no brainer... I mean common sense may tell you that a currently living (i.e. has not gone extinct yet) species of deer living in a desert habitat would probably be plenty prepared to live through any kind of drought conditions, but I have often caught myself blaming the drought conditions for the suffering deer populations, not predation... Obviously you can't blame it on one thing, but I thought this was some interesting stuff to say the least. So what do you think? Is it a valid study? Can you think of any other variables that might be effecting the population specifically in this study? What do you think really effects our deer populations the most in Arizona and should we be worried? Bryson

Bryson Bendall replied to Atypical's topic in Sticker Sightings!
Hey Atypical! That was mine! well, to be honest it was my wife, I was at work with her car with the best gas mileage and she had my jeep! Do you work out there too, or were you just cruisen by? HAHAHA Yeah, that is why my wife was there too... She just got into the whole zumba thing and loves it! And too bad I was at work, cause I'm sure I would've stood out like a sore thumb! I'll do what I can about that kill pic! Things are crazy right now with school, work, life, etc. so I'm not sure how much scouting I'll get to do in the next few months, and I'll be hunting a new area so... I'm gonna need some serious luck this year to be in the right place at the right time! But hey, gotta do what yah gotta do! I'll be looken out for some from you too! -

Saw a couple stickers this week and just wanted to say hi!!! #1 was at bass pro in mesa, White jeep cherokee... lifted lots of stickers on the side but one BIG coues whitetail.com sticker on the back window! You guys must have been headed home. My wife and I were going to grab her a fishing license and her first fishing pole, so of course she picked a pink one! haha... #2 was a big white F something50 ... This morning I was headed over to the ASU research ponds to see if I could get on a good large mouth. I think you were getting on to the 60 at about Guadalupe, and I was getting off at Elliot. Anyway, Just wanted to say hi and if you see a Gun metal blue Cherokee sport cruisen around mesa with a big ol sticker on the back just give a wave!

Man ernesto! You gotta hit em to kill em man!!! hahaha... just kidding... I've got a similar story to go along with this one, back in april i was in Australia finishing up a two year mission and got word through email that a coyote jumped our back fence and got our little weiner dog out of her bed and messed her up good enough to kill her. We live in Vail, just outside of Tucson, in a smaller neighborhood butting up to a large ranch just chalk full of critters. So I was livid and needed a little revenge. I got home May 6th and wasn't long until i was sitting in my first stand in two years. I set up overlooking a large wash with mesquites everywhere, typical desert landscape, about half a mile from our neighborhood, facing away from the neighborhood. I stuck primarily to jack rabbit distress, and tried a little wood pecker stuff, all hand call action, and after about 20 minutes of calling had nothing. So I packed up and headed back to the house... I walked about 100 yards from my stand and happened to glance back and about 20 yards behind where i was sitting were two yotes wondering where there free meal had run off to, so...just like clock work, i was set up in about 5 seconds and in about 20 seconds one of those coyotes was relocated back to heck...where she came from. It was my first stand, and first shot after a two year hunting sabatical and it felt REAL good! haha... well yesterday i got a text from my mom (i've moved to chandler now and no longer live with the parents) and yesterday morning around 615 my 11 year old little brother was out playing with two more weiner dog puppies, these being my sister's dogs that we were dogsitting. He went inside for 2 minutes to get something and when he came back outside he found a coyote with one of the puppies in it's mouth! Now we have a 5 foot block fence and no with rod iron gates and stuff... this aint no chain link fence or anything... so... He hollared and the yote dropped the dog (a few puncture wounds, but nothing a little antibiotics and painkillers can't take care of) and in one bounce was over the fence and gone. That yote had the guts to jump the fence when it knew that there were humans around and in broad daylight... So needless to say, there will be some " relocation" efforts taken out in the coming weeks. I'm gonna oil up the shot gun and try some thick cover, in your face calling, and see what we can do... So ernesto... we feel your pain buddy! Whack em and stack em!
