Bears and Trail Cams
Bryson Bendall replied to standman's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I went on a hike at a major scout ranch in New Mexico, and they said that film is made of the fat of animals. And bears have sensational smelling and are attracted to it. We had to hang bear bags about 20 ft. in the air every night, and one of the things we had to put in it was any camera film. I thought that was kinda interesting. -
Well we did notice the fresh brake but there was some green marks from bushes or something so I don't think he broke it when he fell. By the way, the story is one of the first responses to this topic. Bryson

My dad, 8 yr old bro, and I went out to 30A, a place we hadn't hunted for a long time. Opening morning, we hike to the top of a small hill about 5:30 and wait for it to get light. I'm on one side of the hill and my dad's on the other with my little bro. Well about 6:30 I hear shooting. He tells me to come over quick, and then he tells me to stay so I'm kinda gettin excited. about 30 min. later he shoots a couple more times. He says the deer's bedded down and wounded so my dad and bro stalked closer, the deer jumped up and my dad finished him off and he dropped on the spot. So of course they start yellin and screamin. so my dad get's on the radio and says, "hey I just shot the biggest whitetail I've ever seen in my life". so I run over there and can't believe my eyes. He's a 6 by 4 and scores 107.2 gross, 102.0 net. So my dad kinda screwed up my hunt but I'd have to say it was worth it. I'll have pictures of him when we get them developed. Pretty awesome. He has about a 1.5 inch drop tine too he's real nice.

About a week and a half ago, I saw a doe off the side of a road in 35a. She was standing in some tall brush and right next two here were three tiny little guys all with spots. Amazing site, I just wish I had my camera. -
Sorry it's taking so stinkin long guys. I'm just trying to find the map that my dad says we had (yeah right). Be lookin for a pm sometime soon thought, I promise.

I've been hangin out in unit 35A for the past few years and I've seen a little of both. Last year I had an amazing shot at a small fork, 30 yrds, broad side. But I didn't shoot because standing behind him in a small dent in the hill was a record class 100+. He was in that indention just enough that I couldn't see him. well, this year, that same canyon, I've spotted a nice 95+ with another 80-85 incher. Also this year, I've seen another small fork with a nice 90+. So, I don't know if it is just the area, but deer are Weird.

Sure no problem ElkDeer. My dad and I got picked for our fourth choice in 30A late October. But I've also been doin a ton of bow hunting.

Flagstaff4398, hey my dad has to get some maps out of the area. I know the canyon is called Dry Canyon. when we get the maps out i'll send you a pm.

I hunted the area about 3 years ago to no avail. However, I was mule deer hunting. My dad, friend, and I hiked deep into the middle of the mule mountains, stopping to glass at every saddle, peak, etc. Well we stopped for about an hour for lunch and a short nap. We woke to two bucks in the very bottom of the canyon. Well from where we were they looked like mule deer, so my friend and I put an amazing stalk on these two bucks and trecked to about, 30 yrds. We jumped them in the bottom and I brought up my gun to shoot. But, the white flags popped up and I lowered it again. Both were fairly large forks. Yeah that was three years ago. However, I know there are still back in there. just glass, glass, and hey....glass some more and have fun while your at it.

Getting my Feet Muddy
Bryson Bendall replied to HillBilly_Al's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Hillbilly (great name) well I'll have to admit I am a youngun but I do know quite a bit about hunting 35A. I've hunted the area with rifle for about 4 years and started bow hunting the area last year (and bow season is almost here, I can't wait). so, caliber wise, I've used a 243 every year. On the coues I shot, I had a full pass through and a beautiful exit wound at a little more than 200 yrds. My dad uses a 270 and nearly blew a deer off the planet last year (long story, quite funny). so I wouldn't reccomend anything larger than that unless your shooting from 500 yrds which is not a good idea. For places to hunt, I'll give you one hint. The Huachuca Mtns. are a wonderful place with deer in every canyon. I have not gone a day without seeing a buck while out hunting. No lie. Just make sure you don't venture into Coronodo National monument cause of course that is ilegal. Your optics sound great. They will deffinetly do the job. To touch on the Illegals. They're all over. My dad and I saw a group of about eight last year while hunting. They are very skittish so if they see you they are most likely going to high tale it. But like coyotes, you always have one or two with rabies that might come after you. So BE CAREFUL. The last thing we need is a dead hunter and you sound like a good guy. If you need any more help just hollar. Good luck. Bryson -
Thanks. I will deffinetly invest in a few topos. And I might go check out the Dos Cabezas one of these days. It sounds like there is not many places to pick from because everything is private. Is the East side of the Dos Cabezas the only public side?
