Anyone else have this happen?!
GRONG replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
You only carry 3 arrows?!?!?! You carry more than 10 bullets don't ya? I carry at the least 5 and if my quiver held more I'd pack that sucker full. What would happen if you stuck a deer in a fairly bad place and he bedded down? Then you stalk up on him and fire the last 2 arrows into the rocks and it looks as if he's gonna live for another 12+ hours. Then what? You'd sure as crap be wishin you had more arrows right? I've never taken a hunter out that didn't have at least 5 or 6 and NEVER will I EVER take a muzzleloader hunter into the woods if he doesn't have at least 6-8 shots on him or a rifle hunter with an ENTIRE box of shells. I've seen that scenario happen one more time than I'd like to have seen in my several years as a guide. That stuff gets U.G.L.Y and an animal doesn't deserve to just lay there and die a nasty death. I'm not harping on you Casey, I just hate to see yourself get in a situation that an ethical hunter, like yourself, doesn't want to be in. -
I guess it was just my turn.....

I guess I didn't make myself clear. This picure was taken the opening wknd of the Oct wt hunt in 21. I shot my deer the 2nd weekend and saw these pics at that time. I have NOT been back there until yesterday. From what sign I saw in there yesterday it didn't look like it was done anytime recently. There were no quad tracks on the road from the Dec hunt that I could tell and no footprints anywhere near there for the past month at least it looked like. I could be wrong but I really really think that this hunter pictured saw the cam and stand and came back after the hunt ended on Nov 6th. He could've taken it the next day after I'd been there for all I know. What's unlikely is that anyone else found it is what my point is. It's been there for 4 solid years and not in a place that would draw a human to walk thru there. It's not on a rim, ridge-top or even in a saddle for that matter either. Nobody found it in 4 years so I can't figure out why someone just happened upon it and had nothing else to carry so they took the camera and that heavy-butt treestand and pulled all the steps out of the tree too. That's what I doubt and it's obviously my own theory cause I'm one of the VERY tiny handful of people that even knew where it was to begin with. Just knowing that there's a new salt lick w/in 125 yards of mine all of the sudden my stuff dissapears makes me VERY VERY suspicious. Maybe it's not that guy in the picture, I understand that, but like I said, If I see another stand/blind/camera set up there I'm gonna start playing Monkey Wrench Gang. -

You know I'm not sure why guys feel like they have to protect the indentity of an F'n thief. I don't have the slightest problem posting a guy's picture if I think he's the one that did it, I wish more guys would too! Thieves and vandals are the lowest form of scum in our society (rapists and murderers too of course) and need to be dealt with with a swift hand. I bullet to both knee caps and a SLOW miserable death to all of them! There's absolutely ZERO societal use for the kinds of people that take pleasure in making other's lives miserable by stealing from them or hurting others in any way! And I will say this, I will be going back from time to time and if I ever find a trail camera I won't take it. I will smash it into pieces but I won't take it. If I find a Double-bull blind, I won't take it I'll cut HUGE holes out of all sides of it and leave it. If I find a treestand there I'll drop a deuce on the seat and cut 9/10ths of the strap that holds it to the tree. I'll think of others I'm sure..... -
OUCH! Hey Chris, I might take one off you for one I'd like to mount some day. Got one that had 4 3/4-5" type bases?

If any of you think I'm bummed about the score of my deer I'm totally not. I only had a little "guess the score" cause I wanted to make sure that I'm not the only one that this buck fooled. Ya Andy did get most all of it on film. He told me he got it all done yesterday and that I'll have it on Tuesday. I CAN'T WAIT!!
-
Boy it's nice in here by the fire too........ And boy these antlers do feel nice. If you could shoot worth a crap you'd be sitting here next to me and could fondle our antlers together Feel not sorry for me, for I will be watching my trail cameras for yet another glorious buck to walk in front of it. This will probably give me an excuse to explore some new areas. Hmmm.... Things to ponder as I stroke my antlers for another 11 1/2 months. Did I mention I just killed a buck with my bow on Sunday? I think I'll sleep in tomorrow and when I wake up in my warm bed around 8AM and as I do I'll think of Tyson freezing his taught nipples off and the white flags he'll be seeing fleeing the hills in the opposite direction with yet another blown stalk. Sleep tight.......

OK, before I release the score of this deer I want you all to know that I'm not full of it. I've told a handful of people in the past couple of days and most of them call an immediate B.S. on me and still think I'm pulling a fast one on them. My buck gross scores 100 7/8". How's that for flippin crazy!?!?! On Friday night, when Andy showed me video of the buck, when i did the math I just couldn't get more than 103-105" and thought for some reason I was just completely missing something. Then Saturday when I saw the deer alive I about soiled my camos. I thought for sure I was looking at a 120" 3pt buck!! Maybe the excitement of it all had something to do with it, I don't know. This buck could've barely weighed more than 85 pounds if it was lucky. Probably less. When moving it I had ahold of an antler and Andy had one leg and we nearly laughed as it was pretty much effortless to carry him. In fact when we quartered him Andy commented that the he'd seen javalina quarters that were nearly as big... LOL!! But like I said before, I in no way regret shooting this buck. The experience of stalking a big buck like this and actually making it happen, with Andy, was just an unbelieveable experience! Thanks for reading............

Two of the absolute coolest pictures of a TANK coues buck I've EVER SEEN!!!!! Thanks for sharing man that is freakin awesome!!

Jason that deer is gorgeous!!!!! Congrats!

WOW!! Way nice! I'll follow Amanda's comments on the hunt. Take us with..........

Dude, once again you absolutely kill me with your replies!!!!!! Bwahahaha!!! Muley62, just sticking my Canon Powershot 7.1 right up to the lens of my 15x Shwerbinskis. Works awesome!

Seeing that these new Nov hunts are the week or so prior to the rifle hunts I can't imagine there's only gonna be 25 people in the woods. I bet it'd be a madhouse of guys scouting for their hunts. Then those guys with the rifle tags will be hunting elk that have been hunted for a while and will be that much more spooked and harder to find. I guess it's all about the opportunity though right? Not for me though. My two cents.

Dude that was HILARIOUS!!!! Great story Chris.

Giggity giggity drooooooooooool........... Give us some measurements on that HOG!!!!

HAHAHAHA!!! I wore the GRONG orange shirt the day before but just couldn't connect with it on dammit. I was really hoping to be wearing it when and if one of us was successful. Oh well, maybe I should of packed a clean on in the pack with me. Next time..... Thanks for all the wonderful comments everyone!! I just still can't get over how completely bad-butt of an experience that was! What a fall/winter for some awesome memories! I'm just totally stoked that two of my best friends were with me on the four last kills I made. Andy's been there for the last two archery bucks of mine and Chris Gravatt was there for my archery bull this past Sept and my coues buck in early November. Neither of which I have been in on any kills with them though. Hmmm..... Guess I'll just have to keep them close by when I've got another tag. Here's a couple live pics I took of him while I was waiting for him to get closer just in case I wasn't able to get an arrow in him. That patch of brownish hair at the top of his back above his shoulders is what I like to call, A NASTY BATCH OF TICKS!!!!! Holy lord that deer was COVERED in them. I cleaned out the head tonight and two of those yellowish Bott Fly (?) larvas were trying to make a break for it till I knifed them in half. You talk about nearly losing my dinner!!! Those things are NASTEEEEEEE!!

Mcfugledelooocious!!!!!!! Freakin awesome man! Any bigger pics so we can get a better look at all that bone!?!?!

Monster Archery Buck *UPDATED*

OH HELLS YES!!!!!!! Congrats again Germy (as Gravatt pronounces it). Man that thing is a flippin B E A S T!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Simmer down now, easy, eeezee. Truth be told, my good friend Andy Knowlton found a few nice bucks on Friday and called me and invited me down for some spot-n-stalk, southern AZ style. Long story short, I glassed one of the bucks up at 11 AM on Saturday morning as he was following a doe. Andy and I crossed the canyon and got above the bedded buck and his doe. We slowly peaked over the ridgetop and found the doe feeding but no buck. Eventually spotting the buck after he'd already seen our ugly faces at a mere 75 yards! dang! We backed out and opted to try again on Sunday. Sun-up found us glassing again and as the hours went by Andy finally says, "I got a bedded buck!". Now this wasn't just your run of the mill spot Andy pulled out of nowhere, this was an AWESOME spot he made on this buck. At nearly 3/4 of a mile Andy saw this bucks head and antlers sticking up as he was bedded. SHEESH!! Eventually the buck moved to a better and more stalkable bedding area and our stalk was on. Four hours later found Andy at approx 45-50 yards of the bedded buck with his longbow, while the buck was facing him no less, and myself at 120 yards away in a different direction. We had studied the area prior to our stalk and we both had a good feeling what this buck was gonna do when he got up ...He was either gonna go in Andy's direction or down the draw towards me. Lucky me he opted to come down the draw. After rubbing his glorious antlers and feeding his way down the draw, I had about every rock and cactus ranged and was as ready as you can be for a buck like this. Lucky for me I was sitting down as he came by at 47 yards. Had I been standing, I think the jello, my knees had turned into, would have made for one very unstable shot. Well ol Grongulous takes the first shot and shoots right over the buck's back. The buck ran 15 yards, stopped and looked around like what the H was that! I slowly got another arrow on and readied myself for another shot. He relaxed finally, turned broadside again and I let another one go. This time the expandible blades on the broadhead deployed rather prematurely and made for a beautiful whizzing sound as it landed at the hind legs of the buck. LOVELY!!!! Now the buck is getting ansy and is about to get the S out of Dodge. I slapped a 3rd arrow on, pulled back, guessed the yardage, grunted to stop him and let her rip. I hit him a tad far back but could tell the arrow entered him and skewered him lengthwise. Just a few inches of arrow showed. Andy had been filming the whole ordeal from his vantage point and got it all on camera! We waited a while and then went to look for blood.... NOTHING! Could barely even find a track in the gravely rocks. Anyway, I stalked down the draw he ran into trying to find something but only found a couple running tracks here and there. About ten minutes later I spotted his head and antlers laying against a big boulder deader than dead!!!! I screamed, Andy screamed, hugs and various other pleasantries were exchanged as we realized what the crap we had just accomplished. It was truly the absolute most awesomely planned and executed stalks I've ever been in on and to see it come thru successfull with a good friend like Andy just made it that much more special. Thanks Andy, you are a true friend and I hope we have many more fun ventures in the woods together like this one! And before you ask, no I have not taped him yet. So let the guessing begin..........

Monster Archery Buck *UPDATED*

WOW!!!! Congrats Jeremy -
Dad and I found these sheds about 3-4 weeks ago while looking for lion sign. Dad found the first shed and it scores an even 175" making it his best shed he's ever picked up. I found the match a couple hundred yards away and it scores 156". Got completely robbed on the G-5 obviously but it still grosses just over 370". Had it been as big as Dad's it woulda been in the 390" class. The G2s are 23 6/8" and 22 3/8". This is the biggest set we've ever found together as well. We've found several big sets over the past 18 years or so of shed hunting but this is the best one. Enjoy
