Come on Mike tell us how big you really thought he was before you posted them here. Just goofing with you man. I think it's so exciting that you've got pictures of such a cool elk and nice and clear ones at that! Thanks for sharing dude. Josh

Looks like I'll have to start hunting a different unit. I got hammered 5 years ago and now I'm getting finished off this year. If it jumps the Verde some of the best remaining Coues country in 22 is gonna fry as well. This is the 2nd time the Forest Svc has had an opportunity to put it out before it got out of control and they let it slide again. Oh well I guess, it needed to burn but I just hate to see nothing but scrub oak as far as the eye can see be the only thing left on the slopes. I'm gonna start hunting the, soon to be extinct muleys, on the north rim. Anyone know a good muley site I can go to? Josh

I didn't either. My fingers are crossed for a 21 or 22 tag!

WOW, that looks like a big cat!!!!!! 130 pounder? Nice shootin! Josh

Hey guys thanks for the kudos. Pretty much anyone that hunts their dogs A LOT catches lions. I know several local guys that say they hunt lions but have trashy dogs and cant catch jack. Do your homework or trust some good word of mouth and you should do OK. Just remember, even though you'll be hunting them with dogs, hunting is hunting and there are no guarantees. Good luck. Josh

Heeer puss puss puss. Is that the one you're talking about Mike? I like the sounds they make as they're hanging out on a branch with the dogs barking under them.

Az4life, That guy I talked to was under the impression it was for this month but he could be wrong. It would seem logical that since the regs just came out with the quota listed in there that it would make sense that it would be for next year. Younghunter, Like KGaines said, you need to be one lucky SOB to see lions in the field w/o dogs. I have spent hundreds of hours behind the binos over the past 10 years and have been pretty lucky glassing them up. I've probably seen well over 12 of them. Of course I've never glassed one up while actually trying to though. I love your motivation, I'd suggest like 25-06 says and use a call. later, Josh

I think that even if they had made a quota of 500 lions in 6A south they still wouldn't have killed 5 of them. That's some tough country around there. If there was 10 different lion hunters in there it'd still be tough to muck some of them out. Of course as soon as you do though there will be more to replace them. Like you said though Keith, I hope they get them from a place where they're used to lions. We'll see........

I'm shooting a new AR-34 and man do I love it. I don't have much to compare it too since I've been an instinctive finger shooter for 15+ years and have always shot an Oneida but this thing kicks a serious amount of tail I think! I just started going to the summer 3-D shoots again. For those of you who haven't been to a 3-D shoot I'd highly recommend it, what awesome practice! Josh

Oh man that is awesome!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations!! I just had my first nearly 6 weeks ago and he is the light of my life. I can't wait for him to grow a little so I can pass on some of what my Dad tought me. Thanks for letting us know! Josh

I ran into the Game Warden for 19A in the store the other day and I asked him about the sheep transplant that's gonna happen. He told me that the Sheep Society had all this money saved up and they needed to something with it so they're buying some sheep from some other state and bringing them in this month (June), that's the plan anyway, and their putting them in West Clear Creek. Quite interesting. My $.02 says the lions are gonna hammer them but this should get very interesting, I can't wait to see what happens. Josh

HOLY MOLY!! That would be strange, bighorn sheep in my back yard. The only logical "sheep looking" country would have to be towel peaks and Hackberry Mtn. How odd!! The lions will HAMMER those sheep in there if they ever decide to do it. Maybe the lions will find the sheep delicious and leave our Coues alone. This ought to be very interesting to watch. Josh

Aw heck! I was just doing what I would expect anyone to do for me if I invited them to one of my good areas. You guys are too kind, I appreciate the kind words but am a tad embarrassed. I'll try to get the "as they lay" photos to Amanda this wknd when I get back. See ya, Josh

NICE! But I hate unit 8, thats a totally worthless unit and with the huge elk die off this winter it'd be cruel to actually harvest any more elk than need be. Leave the poor things alone! Word on the street in Williams is that all the big elk in 8 went north into 10 and 7 I heard.

25-06 I hear ya man. Az4life, I like your suggestions. We shouldn't have to put up with nonsense like this. Can't we just talk hunting, shed hunting and having fun in the outdoors w/o some person ruining it for the rest of us? I guess there's always one guy that has to be that way. What a shame. For some reason I thought that all of us that come to this forum were all on the same side and come here to shoot the breeze. If we wanted confrontation we'd be on PETA's site raising heck over there. Good talking with you guys.

CHD, I'm not sure why you continue to antagonize me, I'm merely passing on some fact and some opinion, both of which I try to clarify in my posts. If you want to pick on me and the success of my outfit and expect me to comment or defend myself, I will not. I'm not sure what your problem is or what your beef with the world is but you won't find an argument with me here, especially on a public forum. Nor will I make stabs back at you with spite or negative comments, like you have directed at me, to make you look like less of a hunter or man. Az4ife, the mission statement you made about the G&F is hilarious!! Thanks for the nice comments as well.

Way to go AMANDA!!!

Just remember, the more degrees someone has, that usually means the least amount of common sense they have. That's my personal opinion anyway. I'd trust a biologist's numbers if they could prove to me that they spent more time in the field behind the binos, miles walked, etc instead of the mathmatical equations that they use to, key word here, "estimate" the number of deer in a unit. My father and I have both spent time afield with game wardens who tell us how they get the numbers for deer per unit. Now I don't know how they do it every year but here's what they did, according to the wardens we've talked with. During thier aerial surveys they would only fly and count the number of deer in a section. Lets say they saw 10 bucks in that section. Instead of flying the rest of the unit for a much more accurate count, they multiplied the number of sections in that unit and then again by the number of bucks they saw. For arguments sake lets say there is 200 sections in that unit. According to thier math that would make the population of bucks 2000. All you guys and gals both know if you spent much time at all in the field that there aren't 2000 bucks in any unit in the entire state of Arizona. The major problem with their system is that the section they fly might be one of the only parts of the unit that even has deer in it, therefore giving the illusion that there is plenty of bucks to justify 500 tags. Now you can play with the math all you want. Say they only saw one buck in that section. Using the same 200 sections that'd be 200 bucks throughout the unit. Now if they're still giving 500 buck tags in a unit that only has 200 bucks, given the harvest objective, there still isn't enough deer to be hunted effectively. We would all love to kill a gorgeous buck during our hunt but for the most part people are killing spikes to little 3 points on thier hunts. Majority of living bucks in a unit rarely get to see the ripe age of 3 years old. How can we ever expect to regain our deer herd if the G&F don't even know how to manage our deer? The only thing they know how to do is sell permits, regardless of game. I spend nearly 6 solid months in the field hunting and guiding each year and I can attest to you all that I might get lucky and see 25-40 muley bucks in a year in the northern units I hunt. Some years much less. The reason I'm saying this is because I'm trying to give myself a little credibility so that you all don't think I'm just blowing smoke and making up things. I've typed enough for tonight. See ya, Josh

Lee, 50 bucks was just an exaggeration of how little the game unit managers know about their own unit. There could be 200 there for all I know but saying 50 makes you think. There could be 20 for all they know and they'll still continue to pump out hundreds and hundreds of the tags out every year and continue to blame it on the drought. Wetmule should post some of his factual information he filled me in on today and it would blow your minds.... SERIOUSLY!! Your jaws would drop at how little they know about the poplulation of deer on the Kiabab and the Strip.
