Long Range Dink 1,243 yards
Hunterjohnny replied to STOMP442's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I don't remember reading that section of my hunting hand book that says hunters are obligated to get as close as possible???? I must have missed that page. Because there isn't one and ur going off ur opinion witch is this case is bashshing another hunters success .. Keep it to urself or cry to ur wife about it but let this guy enjoy his tag filled!!!!!! I'm guessing that military snipers shoud get closer as well cause that's not fair that the people don't know where they are...lol... He did what he was supposed to do make a clean kill shot! Period!!!! First of all if you need to read a hunting handbook to learn hunting ethics you are pathetic. Second Opinions are all anybody has on any of these forums so if you have a problem with mine too bad, if my opinions upset you so much maybe you should move to the rainbow pride forum instead. And yeah I Dont have a problem with this guy "enjoying" his tag its when he post the yardage and goes fishing for complements from the faithful Long range enthusiasts that I have a problem with and all of you encouraging him to do it again. And as for the military snipers I Dont care how far they are because they are shooting at threats not deer. I couldn't give a sh*t less if a towel head gets his leg or arm blown off. Its when I see deer gut shot or dead in thein the bottom of a canyon rotting or on 3 legs when I get p*ssed. maybe you are forgetting he missed the first shot! PERIOD. Nice post! Dont most folks post yardage in their stories? Yes says I. I see that if your a long range gay Iranian sniper there is no love lost! -
I am not a biologist but I would bet that over 90% of coues deer bucks would grow into 3 pts if they were able to get old enough. Large 2-points is definately the exception just like large 5-point bulls happen but are also the exception. I know that spikes and two-points have ALWAYS been slaughtered in the early hunts. The point is that there would be more trophy class deer if there was a 3-pt rule in some units and they didn't get slaughtered. Would you really rather make sure that a few big 2-points don't die of old age than have more big bucks? Honestly enjoy the hunt, but if trophy is your thing good, just dont fence me into it please.

Well recently a 2x2 was posted on this forum that scored 109...and I would LOVE TO SHOOT!! I guess that thing would have to die of old age under a 3 pt rule... Plus there is no guarantee that a 2pt or spike will EVER develop into a 3pt... those deer would breed with the does and their genetics would pass along. Spike and forks have ALWAYS been slaughtered on the first hunts... That was what I was thinking. That is probably the neatest buck I have seen, and there are some good ones on here. A 3 point rule would leave him out? Really? And a 2 point is the biggest I've shot (but much smaller than that one)!

What? Feed the Trolls?

Does that apply just to when you are hunting? Only if I'm not involved!

Well being a lucky man I have a 3C Bull tag coming up Nov 30, but being a little past prime I have been worried about the cold weather. Cragslist supplied me with a fixer up travel trailer. A little 17' Nomad 1977 single axle. Shelter, a warm shower, and a soft bed! I have never owned a trailer before and was just looking for random thoughts from those of you that do. In my mind I have checked everything I should and have a list of things that I would need to cover anything that might come up. But I learned long ago that the vision in my mind isnt always the real one. So what little things have you learned to do, not do, pack, think of when getting a trailer ready for a cold trip up north? The first silly question of course is water. I'm using a half ton truck (Chevy luckily) and I think I will be close on weight with everything loaded. I dont know the weight of the trailer but understand these older ones tend to be solid (heavy). Do I try to find water up in Heber or is it not enough weight to think about? I get crazy and need details lined out before I can relax at all so this whole no experience thing isnt cool. And so you know here is what $500 will get you if you look long enough. Not fancy but better than a tent!

Good Ideas! Water tight – Will hose off the top to check for leaks, no signs inside of one Drafts – My leaf blower can check that! Extra battery – It has two 6 volts tied together, supposedly a good set up (Trojan T-105 that were almost as much as the trailer, score!) Bearings – Definitely will check those out Extra water jugs – ALWAYS Tarp to put over your TT in case of leaks – Very good idea Propane full / leave tanks open – Also good. I checked the fittings I could see but have never liked propane inside. Let it sit and send the Mother in Law out to smoke! Tools - Check Carpet outside – Nice, learned that with a tent Fire extinguisher – Hadn’t even thought of that, now I see no smoke alarm either Small propane heater - Check Spare water pump and shut off valve – Good one! Dead trees – Scared now Solar battery charger – Have to look at those floor jack – Better than a scissor jack I bet Jack stands for movement – Nice Anybody have any real experience with the O2 or gas detectors? Funny how 30 days seemed so long before this list!

The lines all run inside the trailer, would they need to be wrapped inside? It looks like it might be original galvanized pipes in there.

Nice to know about tires. You guys got me reading up, who knew trailer tires were a whole new ball game (that only sounds strange if you have a trailer)! I will change those out since I do see the cracks in the tread. Lots of other little things too, thanks. I like the spare water pump idea also! Its odd the more I look at old Nomads I dont see any single axles, I guess it would be better but beggars.... Thanks again for all the ideas, I'm resting a little easier now. So who's got an elk pinned down up there!

One Day Hunt = My Personal Best

I love it when a plan comes together! Nice deer. -
I see this is going a few different dirrections but I'll jump in. If it bothers you enough to keep thinking on it you should say something. But I doubt it will be received well, at first. Nobody wants to be pointed out as doing something "wrong" but given the delivery and some time it could have an impact. Saying nothing encourages it. As far as the internet I personally wouldnt do it that way, that is more of a public attack not a "think about it" moment. (The opinions of this hunter do not reflect the opinions of this station)

Had one of those in the 1970's. Came with a little vial of something, I can't remember what it was. That's right! I forgot about the vial. Looked like one of the perfume samples!

Does anyone else remember the snake-bite kits. Little rubber oval thing with a tourniquet and a razor blade. That was the kit! My dad would carry that and it scared me more than a bite.

WOW! I get enough shin daggers and cuts fully clothed.

Only been out once, small covey and only one I found. Seems my area still has some rebounding to do. -
Nice buck and thanks for sharing the pic. The hat might have been the key, a deer like that opening morning doesnt happen by accident.
-
Nice deer, they should have learned not to split up with you!
