Yeah ... they can have it towed and impounded ... but the owner can still get it back. Like I said ... the camera owner should have asked permission on private property. And the rancher probably has other LEGAL recourse if he wants to make a point.

Really nice buck BUTCH!!! That is a better pic than the one you texted me a while back. He's nice and wide.
-
Man ... if I could just con my old lady into letting me have $1200 for another rifle. I've always wanted a .308/AR Platform. I'll call you if my "Sweet Talkin' " works.
-
You wouldn't happen to have a preference for this round, would ya Lark??? The .270 Winchester is definitely a great round, but is it much different in performance than his .280 Remington? I've never compared the two.

This is a GREAT reminder for everyone, but especially for folks who have not camped a lot. About 10 years ago, a friend of my mom lost both her son and his fiance to CO poisoning (basically asphixiation) on a camping trip. We've always been careful, but especially since that occurrence. One of my friends has the Mr. Buddy, but he's never had great luck with it ... he might have gotten a dud or something. He has a devil of a time keeping it running. I never use anything in my tent for heat ... just a really warm sleeping bag that usually lets me sleep in a T-Shirt and shorts. Funny thing is I paid about $50 for it years ago and it works better than any of the expensive bags some other folks I know have. On occasion I have to sleep in sweats, but infrequently. Be safe all.

That's a great buck!!! What unit were you in?
-
Thanks all! Great memories, that is for sure. Nope 1den ... not Jessie. I'm Steve.

Well, he's certainly not a monster, especially coming from 13A. With some of the pictures and up close and personal examples I've seen from that unit, I almost feel like I robbed the craddle on this one. But circumstances with my hunt dictated taking the first decent one that I saw, and this one was it, especially since I came back empty handed from the Strip 3 years ago after passing up several decent bucks. With two weeks to go until the hunt, my Dad, who was also drawn, had an injury to his foot and was not sure he would be able to go. I was bummed for 2 reasons ... one that I would not get to hunt with my Dad, and two that I probably would not get to go at all ... probably not the greatest area (remote as it is) to hunt alone ... even being a fairly big and pretty capapble guy. We continued to prep for going, but it really wasn't until the week of the hunt we got a thumbs up from his doctor ... so time came and off we went. Spent a lot of time glassing a couple of days prior to and early in the hunt. Glassed some doe, several smaller bucks, some coyotes that would have been good long range shots if I had been hunting coyotes. Nothing really sizeable though. A few days in, after spending some time hiking and glassing in the morning, we were walking back to the truck and my Dad was talking about how much his foot was bugging him. I knew we were getting near the end of what would be meaningful hunting. We were heading back for a midday meal, and I decided to take a look in one area by a stock tank where we had seen some deer headed. Sure enough ... there's a buck. When I saw him, I knew he wasn't super wide, but he looked tall and the antlers looked pretty thick. He jumped a fence ... was a really awesome site as he made it look so easy. I headed to where he had gone over, and I glassed up the hillside behind thinking I might see him moving up into the trees. Nothing. I was thinking that he must have bolted after he hit the ground on the other side of the fence, and there was a cut there I had not seen, so he could have doubled back on me without me seeing him. I was thinking I'd lost him, but I decided I'd better check that cut ... jumped the fence and walked about 30-40 yards down into the cut and there he was. He was quartering toward me, but grazing and not looking my way. I cocked my rifle, pulled it up, and as soon as I got him in my sights he looked right at me. Didn't have a lot of time to think, but I remember thinking "GOOD ENOUGH DUMMY ... SHOOT!!!" One shot...right through the heart and he dropped. My Dad came walking over about 5 minutes after the shot. First thing he said to me was "I'm glad you took that one ... my foot is DONE." Then High Fives and photos. I was really glad I got to go with my Dad and share the time with him. It made it all the more special that he was there when I took my first ever mulie buck. Yeah ... he could have been bigger coming from 13A ... not a Trophy to most, but a very special buck for me.

I think the ballistics of the 7mm Wby will be better (ever so slightly) than any other 7mm until you get to the STW and the RUM in that caliber. The .280 would be a little behind ... more as your ranges increase due to the lack of starting horsepower (.30-06 parent case so less powder ... though also less recoil which is important to some). The main difference will be cost of components for reloading and/or lack of factory ammo in the Wby caliber. The 7mm Remington Mag is still the most commercially available, and no doubt always will be as it is a very capable and popular round. That said, if you have a 7mm Wby or .280 I would not go out searching for something else in the .284 stable. The Wby is certainly a good platform for a long range shooter, and the .280 would be good too (out to a point). Saw your ad for 7mm wanted ... you want it for ultra long range on mule deer and elk right? Better penetration and knock down at those ranges? If that is the case, personal opinion, I'd go with one of the .300 Magnums (Win, Wby, RUM or .30-378 Wby) or step up to a .338 Lapua or Edge (.338 in a .300 RUM case). What's the old saying on Hot Rods ... "There's no substitute for cubic inches..." In some respects, I think that goes for rifle rounds as well. In most (though NOT all) cases, I think you will have more retained energy downrange, and you will certainly have less worry with windage (higher mass available) ... and if you are using the ballistic turrets, then FLAT is not really as important, because you take the drop out of the equation. Not that there is anything wrong with a .284 ... fantastic caliber with great characteristics to be sure (and I own one) ... I just think if you are looking at shooting the bigger bodies at extreme ranges what you really want is retained energy for penetration and knock down. I'd use my 7mm all day at medium ranges as a first choice, but if I were thinking to really reach out, I'd grab my .300 RUM everytime. There is a trade in recoil to be sure, but muzzle breaks will deal with that (if you can stand the noise ... I just tolerate a little more hammering on my shoulder). Just my two pennies ... and I am sure that there are those out there that would disagree ... certainly no disrespect to them, as everyone has an opinion, and you could probably talk to 20 "experts" (which I am certainly NOT) that would all have different takes on it. Good luck.

Accurizing a Weatherby Vanguard
sjvcon replied to Condor's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Okay ... so I have to ask because it is something I have read a lot on other sites (so don't shoot me for asking) ... Doesn't the Weatherby "Free Bore", which give the round a velocity boost, inherently reduce the overall accuracy of the rifle? The trade off is speed for flatter shooting, but groups that are less tight. Is that true or false? Kind of relates to this question of accurizing I'd think. -
Yeah ... gotta agree that the locks just keep the honest people honest. Theives will take cameras locked or not. I would say that the Rancher was right in one regard ... if it is his private property, the guy mounting the camera SHOULD have asked first ... and an outfitter should know better. That said, the Rancher should stilll have returned the camera ... keeping it is theft in my mind. If you park your car off the side of the road on someone else's property, they don't have the right to take it ... same should go for a camera.

Large mule deer buck poached near Arizona Strip
sjvcon replied to 200"mulie's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
+1 on the rope. Guys that do this stuff really spoil it for everyone. -
I've seen pics and some actual up close examples of several of the bucks taken out of 13A ... they probably WILL score that high green. Some of them looked like elk ... I kid you not. I spoke to a guy who spends a lot of time up there while I was on my hunt a couple weeks ago (a young guide), and he showed me trail cam pics of deer even larger (several) ... one he said they had estimated at close to 300" from sheds picked up last year. He's a nightmover though, and I guess thus far no one has caught a glimpse of him during the day, or so the guy told me. Fantastic year for antler growth all over the state ... it only makes sense that Kaibab and the Strip would kick out some monsters this year.

Nice job! Great to see fathers and sons out sharing the hunting experience.

Hunting and Fishing
sjvcon replied to Coues&Bass's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Which I guess would be one of the main reasons Game and Fish stands behind it, right? Makes sense. The more I've gone over the arguments against it, the weaker they are. Thanks for the additional clarification Tony. -
Oh yeah ... this looks REALLY GOOD. Nice job.

You can get Duracoat through either Brownells or Midway. Probably a bit sturdier than the Krylon. It is what Ruger supposedly uses on the metal for the 10/22 (under another name). I had a 10/22 Cerakoted (ceramic product that is also marketed under many names) by a guy who does both Duracoat and Cerakote in Glendale. He advertises on Backpage under the name A-Coatings or something like that. He did a really nice job. Also looked at some other stuff he did, and plan on having my Ruger .44 done in Cerakote as well ... very durable. That said, there is something to be said for the DIY stuff ... sense of pride and all. I'd be more inclined to try it on a piece that didn't cost me a bunch. May do my shotgun DIY someday if I get the bug.

Hunting and Fishing
sjvcon replied to Coues&Bass's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Well I took a few minutes to go through this today, and I'm convinced that I should vote "YES". I read several opinions, one if which was a favorable opinion from someone pretty high up with Game and Fish. While granting more power to Legislature is never something I'd do lightly, this bill acts to cement CITIZEN RIGHTS, which I am ALWAYS in favor of. The arguments against were weak, and claimed that the amendment was a response to a "NON-EXISTANT THREAT" ... there is no such thing where the Sierra Club and similar organizations are concerned ... there is always a threat. I'm going to be OUT ON THE STUMP with everyone I know about this one. -
Hunting and Fishing
sjvcon replied to Coues&Bass's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
If that is the case, I would definitely have no issues with it. As always, before voting, I'll have to read the full proposition so I'm fully informed of what I am voting on. Laws and legislation tend to be crafted in a tricky manner ... like tacking the government takeover of Student Loans onto the Health Bill (a Bill I hope will be overturned for MANY reasons), etc. A Bill or Proposition that eliminates the influence of Environmentalist Whackos on Wildlife Management would be a GREAT thing (they ought to add Forest Management too, as we all well know) ... as long as it doesn't put the power in the wrong hands. If your statement is correct, then I'd say they'll have a YES vote from me for sure. It always pays to research what you're voting on to make sure you know the full measure of the result ... to bad our Federal House and Senate members don't follow that ... what was it Queen Pelosi said ... "We have to pass the bill so you can find out what's in it ..." or something to that effect. She wasn't just talking about the public there, but every single member of the US Congress that voted "YES" without reading the 2000+ pages of BS they were voting on. Thanks for the synopsis Tony. I was hoping I heard that wrong on KFYI. It does no such thing. In fact, it removes the threat of the "voters" doing anything. In effect, it does nothing to the way the wildlife is currently managed by the legislature in regards to the LAWS (Title 17) and by AZG&F in regards to the RULES, which is where the harvests, seasons, etc. come under. It has been this way for eons and nothing about that will change. What the amendment WILL DO is REMOVE the threat of the environmental and animal rights groups from putting initiatives on the ballots where the "voters" would decide how to manage wildlife, i.e. the ban on public land trapping, as an example. -
Hunting and Fishing
sjvcon replied to Coues&Bass's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Only thing that concerns me about this is something I heard on the radio (KFYI...so Conservative Talk Show) this morning. It takes the regulatory power out of the hands of Game & Fish, and their wildlife biologists, and puts it in the hands of the voters. Any changes would have to be voted upon. So harvest numbers, etc. would be voted on. If that is true, I have a couple of concerns ... #1 is that if voters become more liberal they could decrease harvest numbers to unhealty levels trying to "spare the poor animals", and #2 is that what the heck to voters know about healthy harvest numbers. Just some things to think about. It would be great to make it a Constitutional Right so that it cannot be threatened, but not so great to take the harvest numbers and subject them to voting. I need to do some more research on it. -
Anyone have a good place to stretch out to 500 or 600 yards or so? Usery and Avery have membership and competition requirements. A couple of my buddies and I would like to find a good, safe location where we can practice at some longer ranges. The 300 yard range at Usery is fine, but we'd like to stretch it a little farther. Somewhere closer would be preferable, but on the rim is fine too. Thanks.

Okay ... I'm in the market for some 15x's and want to get the lowdown. I know Swaro's are great, but new are around $2300 or so. I can afford it, but obviously I want the best bang for the buck, and since I don't hunt or guide professionally, there are a lot of other things I can do with the extra cash. All that said, I'd like to get opinions on the 15x Kaibabs from Vortex, which I've read good reviews on. The 13x and 15X Minox products, which are less expensive than even the Kaibabs. The 15x45 Zeiss Conquest. Leica. Etc. Has anyone done a side by side by side in lower light conditions? Opinions of what you'd do in my shoes???

Well I don't know I would have had the "Stones" to take it that far, but that is CLASSIC!!! Courtesy is something we all should have, whether we are outfitters, guides, professional hunters, or just plain old sport hunters like me. I don't care who you are or how long you have been at this, as a hunter you should know the difference between what is right and what is wrong, and you should try to know the rules, written and unwritten. Plenty of times, I've picked a spot to hunt, gone in and found someone else beat me there (shame on me), and I've backed out quietly and gone to another spot. Sure, I put time in to find that spot, but so did that other person, even if they just stumbled on it through dumb luck. Heck ... I'm usually pretty good about not going in to a spot that is unoccupied but has a treestand or blind set up ... I figure they are taking a break and who am I to butt in. But that is just me. What is the point of getting into a fight? We're "Sportsmen" right? Now I'm not saying I'd back down if someone came into the area I was in and said "Get out ... this is ours" ... not at all. I'd probably have more than a few words about that. But I'd like to think most folks aren't like that. AZelkwrestler, I think you did it right. Approaching the guy in a non-confrontational manner set the right tone ... even if he didn't pick up on it right away. Sounds from your description like he was a bit shaken, maybe anticipating something ... imagine if you'd have jumped on his a$$ right away ... that could have been downright ugly. His initial response was wrong, but he thought better of it, which is good. Unfortunately, some folks (AZLance ... and no I am not picking on you, I'm saying you are right in your statement) here hit the nail on the head ... there are too many people out there that don't have the good ethical behaviour they should. I guess those folks have to be educated. Those that can will take the lesson to heart ... those that can't ... well the old saying goes "You just can't fix Stupid". They need to take up another sport ... bad attitudes and weapons don't mix.
