Anyone using a chest freezer/generator combo?
Phil Carr replied to Curtis Reed's topic in The Campfire
These small freezers are less $ than a high end ice chest and in someways better. I bought one from Costco that fit perfectly between the wheel wells and up against the cab of my Tacoma. We used it on a 2 week hunt and only plugged it in when we were using the generator for other uses. We filled it half way with bags of ice and a few blocks. Placed our frozen food on top. Worked great and I use it at home for keeping some spare bags of ice on hand and extra space for food storage. -
After years of waiting to get a turkey tag I finally completed a bucket list item. My brother called in this bird in on the 2nd day I was able to hunt. 2oz of #7 1/2 shot bing pushed by about 5 drams of black powder. W C Scott and Son 8 gauge hammer gun made in 1888. Picture of my brother posing with my 8 gauge and bird.

Arizona like many other states had a ruling that no shotgun bigger than a 10 gauge can be used on game.I set out about 14 years ago working with the AZ Game and fish department to allow the use of the 8 gauge for hunting all wildlife that could be hunted with lower gauge shotguns. ( Migratory birds are governed the federal G&F) so waterfowl or example cannot be hunted with the 8 gauge. I owned 2 8 gauges at the time. Fortunately the Commissioner at the time agreed with me ( he did not accept the panels original decision to deny my request.) The panel felt that AZ hunters might be confused and shoot migratory birds with the 8 gauge. My response was earlier today the department suspended a hunters license for 5 years for taking two deer in the same year. The hunter argued he was not aware that this was a violation. Ignorance was an excuse for not knowing the law. The panel was directed to go back and figure out how to allow the 8 gauge. Further banning the 8 gauge did not make sense after all 3 1/2 “ 12 and 10 gauges can carry an equally large payload. Other states allow the 8 gauge. The goal should be to harvest the game you are hunting as effectively as possible. As long as the hunter abides by the limit and hunts ethically. As the law stands today you can hunt all big game with the exception of bison. As well you can hunt predators and upland game with the 8. I have now taken turkeys in New Mexico and Florida as well. If any members have 8 gauges it would be nice to hear from you. PS calling in coyotes using the old 8 gauge is a blast.

Well the posting states pointing dogs range. Hunting with Flushing dogs is a whole different type of hunting. -
Pointing dog hunting range
Phil Carr replied to Tres's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I like my dogs to hunt no more than in a 200 yard arc from side to side. Never behind me, checking back from time to time. My dogs will hold birds until I get to them but I am not as fast as I once was and I don't enjoy racing to get to my dogs at further distances. i don't like dogs that hang out close and wont own one. -

Im guessing you have a 8x57 JS chambered rifle. If a round chambers I bet you have the correct ammo. I would just slug it to be sure. ( an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. Good luck looks like a fun rifle.
-
If you were in Tucson I would be happy to make a chamber casting and slug the barrel. I can walk you through slugging the barrel. Just use a lead cast bullet larger than the rifle bore. Use a little lubricant and a short wood dowel to start the slug into the bore, and use the long dowel to tap the slug through the bore. I use a set of dial calipers to measure the slug. You can then determine the slug diameter.
-
The best and safest way to determine what cartridge it takes is to do a chamber cast. I also always slug the barrel. Not hard to do and actually kind of neat to learn to do this. It very well may be 8x57. I copied this for information. This better details the differences. i recently camber cast and slugged the barrel of a friends rifle, a Combination German rifle. His rifle was actually another cartridge of 8x57. I was determined to be a 8x57 JR . A rimmed cartridge. 8x57JS, the "J-bore", was the original chambering for the Mauser. It had a bullet diameter of .318 inches and was a round nose deisgn. The 8x57IS, referred to as the "S-bore" was the later chambering with a new spitzer bullet with a diameter of .323 inches. Early rifles chambered for the J-bore and subsequently modified to fire the larger S-bore were stamped with a "S" on the receiver to indicate the change.
