    Draw Results Out

Unit 8 Bull Tag for me and the family. My dad and bro put in together, my mom and I each put in a separate app, and all of us drew the same tag! I am so excited, I haven't drawn a Bull tag ever, and this is my first elk tag at all in over a decade! Time to start working out harder, and scouting!

    Draw results are up online

I found out this morning that I drew a bull tag for unit 8 Nov 29 hunt. My dad and bro put in on different apps, and we ALL got drawn for the same hunt, in spite of putting in separately. The elk gods have ruled in our favor, since my bro and I haven't been drawn for elk in over a decade!

    Card got hit today!

My dad, bro, and friend got drawn for deer, and another friend got a rocky tag. I'm hoping my card will get hit soon!

Elk & Antelope Draw Credit Cards Charged

That's awesome, congrats! Antelope hunts are my favorite, you'll have to post pics when you have a buck down! And how neat that your son drew a tag on a separate app, too.

Elk & Antelope Draw Credit Cards Charged

Looks like I didn't get drawn, but my dad did paper apps, so we're crossing our fingers. I'd happily give up 10 years of elk & antelope draws for a Desert tag. I'd love to nail that tag and drop a beauty before my dad kicks the bucket.

Duck Recipes --- who has a good one?

Here's an idea. I recently made a Duck and Andouille Elk Sausage Etouffee, and it was amazing. If you love Creole/Cajun food, this is an excellent recipe to try. Like any good Sicilian woman, I don't own measuring cups, so all measurements are approximate: First, I made my own Andouille Elk Sausage, but feel free to buy some from the store: 2.5# pork shoulder, cut into 1" cubes 2.5# elk, cut into 1" cubes 1/2 C. My Rub (recipe below) 1/4 C. Paprika 1.5 tsp. Filé powder (optional) 3 tsp. black pepper 1 tsp. cumin 1.5 tsp. crushed red pepper 2 tsp. garlic powder 2 tsp. salt 1/4 C. chopped garlic 1. Combine, cover and refrigerate for 24 hours. 2. Remove from refrigerator, pass meat through grinder. 3. Pass half of the meat through grinder a second time. 4. Stuff casings or form patties. 5. Grill to perfection or smoke for 25-30 minutes. Then I make the Etouffee! Etouffee base: 1/2 cup flour 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 Tbs. butter 1 quart stock (beef, duck, chicken) 1-2 large cloves garlic, chopped (I am always pretty liberal with the garlic) 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper, preferably a bit overripe and blushing, seeds and membrane removed 1/4 cup chopped onion 1 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup orange juice 3 dashes of your favorite hot sauce(Mine is Cholula) 1 tsp. Creole seasoning or my rub 1 lb. andouille elk sausage 2-3 pounds of cooked, coarsely chopped duck 4 oz. mushrooms, preferably wild or exotic, sliced 3 green onions, tender green parts only, snipped finely 1. Make a dark roux with the flour and oil in a small, heavy pan, stirring constantly. The quantities will make about two or three times as much roux as you need for this recipe, but if you make any less it won't come out right. When the roux reaches the color of an old penny, remove it from the heat and stir in about 1/4 cup of stock until smooth. Let it cool. Reserve all but about 1/4 cup of the roux mixture for other uses. 2. In the same pan (after removing the roux to cool), heat the butter until bubbling and add the chopped bell pepper, onions, celery, and garlic. Cook until they're soft and the onions are clear. 3. Add the remaining stock to the pan and bring to a simmer. Whisk in 1/3 cup of the roux mixture until smooth. Add the rest of the etouffee base ingredients and cook on a low boil to reduce by about a third. 4. Slice the andouille sausages from end to end twice, to get four sticks from each sausage. Cut across the sticks to make quarter-round pieces. 5. In a heavy skillet over medium heat, cook the andouille to render out some of the fat and brown the edges of the andouille pieces noticeably. Pour off any excess fat. Add the duck, chicken, or turkey meat and the mushrooms to the pan and cook until the mushrooms begin to get limp. 6. Stir in one cup of the etouffee base. Lower the heat to medium-low. Cover the pan and cook for two or three minutes, until everything is piping hot and well imbued with the etouffee base. 7. Check the seasonings and add salty, pepper or Tabasco as needed. Serve over rice or on its own. Sprinkle green onions liberally over each plate and serve. Baked sweet potatoes would be the perfect side dish. This serves 4-8 depending on your eaters. In my house, sometimes it barely serves 4, especially when my man and my dad chow down. Those two can put away some food! Enjoy! My Rub: (works great on all meats and seafood) 8 tablespoons paprika 3 tablespoons ancho chili powder 5 tablespoons freshly ground szechuan pepper corns (you can use black, I prefer the unique flavor of the szechuan) 6 tablespoons garlic powder 3 tablespoons onion powder 6 tablespoons salt 2 1/2 tablespoons dried oregano 2 1/2 tablespoons dried thyme

    25th Birthday Surprise

So my darling boyfriend whom many of ya'll know (and some of ya'll don't) is turning 25 in a few weeks. I'd like to do something or give him something special. I want it to be unique, and something he'll love and remember. But I'm not sure what that is. As he knows far more about hunting and the required equipment, it's hard for me to guess at what he'd like (other than a pair of swarovskis - which are WAAY out of my price range). Can any of ya'll help me brainstorm? Out of town trips, gifts....w/e. I HAD tickets to the Brad Paisley concert 3rd row, but have a mandatory test that night that my professor won't allow me to make up Thanks for any help ya'll can give! A private message may be better so he doesn't get any ideas...I want it to be a surprise. In love with a boy, Azhuntergirl

    25th Birthday Surprise

Amanda, that's DEFINITELY part of my gift for him! Thanks for telling me about that! I need to get myself a bumper sticker too, now that I think about it. Might look kinda funny on my mercury milan, but hey, hunters can drive cars too

    25th Birthday Surprise

Lol, Sure Amanda, you can delete yours. Though I highly doubt he'll see it. He hasn't been on since last month, and he's been so busy with his new job that he probably won't be on before his bday in a few weeks. Ya'll have really got my wheels a-turnin. Thanks for all your thoughts!

    how many is too many?

Aww you poor gents. The ONLY time I get upset is when Tim doesn't take me along with him! Then I get sad because I wanna go too! But thankfully, he likes having me along more than he likes going alone. And it's not because I cook while were out. In camp, I leave the cooking to him. We have a tag for whitetail this year, and we're both really excited to kick each other's butts! But I definitely think that you need to spend AS MUCH time with your wife (after all, you do love being around her right?) as you do hunting. I've seen too much hunting destroy marriages even when the women supports and likes the hunting. We women need to feel cherished, loved, and adored. We don't feel that way when you love hunting more than we see you loving us. Just a hint from the woman's view. And Chef...I'm lookin for a lady for ya!

    Bear Arms and Protest

Since I'm not a fan of futility, I'll refrain from saying much more about this topic. But before I go: 1) I'm not certain where you were educated, but MOST of our founding fathers were honorable men. Owning slaves was an acceptable practice, and even at times a Biblical one. And not all of them were alcoholics....water supply wasn't as clean as ours is, cultural differences, etc. However, adultery is a different story. John Adams, George Washington, James Madison, Patrick Henry, George Mason, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin. ALL these men were GREAT men. And as Winston Churchill said, all great men have great faults. But that says nothing to their purposed debate and reason. 2) We are in a war of words, lets not bring firearms to a Presidential rally that inflame minds and hearts of the radical left. I'm aware that only God can convert their twisted minds, but there are plenty of average citizens out there that would be interested in reasoned debate that tuned out and were turned off when Chris B stepped on the scene with his "assault weapon". 2) We all know Glocks and AR's are perceived differently in minds of the uneducated populous. Education should be our goal with this population of dimwits, not toting around already "scary" firearms. To do so continues to attach a further "Waco,TX" stigma to these types of firearms. I would have said Ruby Ridge, but while Randy Weaver was considered to be a "gun toting nut job", he was only convicted of missing his court date. And that was due to a bad attorney. 3) This was a healthcare rally. What is the point of bringing a NEW debate to an unrelated debate? What I mean, and what you misinterpreted was this: I am incredibly aware that the gun debate has been going on for a long time since I've read all the supreme court decisions pertaining to the 2nd amendment (I intend on going to law school, and would like to work for the legal branch of the NRA). But the gun issue had nothing to do with what the rally was about. Stick to one issue at a time. 4) Go rally with firearms for this: Another 2nd Amendment Lawsuit NOT THIS Obamacare 4) It's sad to me that I've been told over and over that I'm "hiding", "in dream land", and "Not standing up for our rights", since it's obvious that is not what I'm about, or who I am. Don't doubt my dedication to the country our founders created, and people like my big brother have fought to keep free. That's a presupposition you are in no position to make. Since we all believe we are right (I know I do ), I agree to disagree on this one and let things be. It's as futile as banging your head against a wall. Best Wishes, Azhuntergirl P.S. TAM, my boyfriend is on your side on this debate, so date nights have been interesting

    Bear Arms and Protest

First off: "Yanks" as my family and many others from WWII have used it refers to an American soldier from WWII. It's what the Allied European forces called us - kind of like "doughboy" from WWI. (And in other terms, my family is from the North and South...so I have no cause to use it in any derogatory fashion) I obviously wasn't there during the Founding, but from having read as many founding documents as I can get my hands on, they made one thing very clear: war is a last resort. you do all you can as citizens to not put fire in the belly of your 'enemy', and to resolve things with logic and reasoned discussion. They did not use false logic and appeal to emotion, but to reason. They were reasoned men, who conducted themselves accordingly. And I believe you have misread what I've said. I'm NOT telling people to stop standing up for their rights. I've done more in the political community via the RNC as well as the NRA than most people my age in this state. I'm incredibly active on behalf of 2nd amendment rights. But I'm also not going to allow emotion to dictate my action, but rather logic and reason. I'm not attacking people, I'm not being rude. What I've said over and over is this: EXERCISE your right. BE PROUD of your rights and your country. I sure as heck am. I have a brother in Iraq on his second tour getting shot at daily. I have 3 grandfather's that served (yes...3). I have friends that have served, died, and lost limb. I have a cousin who was permanently disabled because of 9/11. Chris B said that he "carries a weapon always, except for when he's in the shower". But he doesn't walk around his work, the grocery store, the post office, or down the street with his dog toting an AR-15. He carries his Glock 17 (not my choice of caliber in the .9mm he carries - but as a libertarian I support his right to carry an inferior caliber LOL JK GUYS!) everywhere. That day, he took his loaded Glock (fine) and his loaded AR-15. I'm not disputing his right to carry ANY type of weapon. And I wish this were the country it once was, where that wouldn't phase anyone. But in order to effect change, we must act as rational and reasonable people - working through the highest moral tactics possible. My momma always told me ya win more flies with honey than with vinegar. Reasoned and logical debate is the honey, and Chris B's AR was the vinegar. He just brought guns to the FOREFRONT of a debate that had nothing to do with firearms. He hit the left in the face with a baseball bat. Considering they are in power, perhaps we should be a bit more subtle in our tactics. He basically screamed to the Dems "Come take my guns away from me. Restrict my rights. I dare ya." Well ya know what.....that's what they're heading to do now. I have it from a very reliable congressional source that there are bills being drafted in order to further restrict 2nd amendment rights. Things we didn't want to happen. GREAT. NOW I get to work even HARDER to undo the damage. Rights come with responsibilities and propriety in place of exercise. His AR wasn't the showing of logic and reason that the founders exhibited in their discourse with their enemies.
