    Friday Night

dang... Who's that sexy dude in that uniform??? We found this guy out while we were working the other day. I'm throwing in a pic of where we found him. Any guesses? Its a pretty easy guess, but I like the pic. There are some nice bucks this year in this "area" where the pic was taken....

    G R O U S E

Well boys, I had a really good time on the hunt with Doug, Casey and one of my buddys who recently moved here to AZ from TX. We all hunted pretty hard and I think between all of us, we saw around a dozen grouse. The country was THICK to say the least. Aspen stands, and the undergrowth and the downfalls made it quite the rodeo just to get around. Not to mention the 9000 ft. elevation!! And the wind really blew ( pun intended! ) !!! We were camped just around the bend from the north rim of that big ol hole that all of us love. Made for one beautiful sight while hunting. We just ended up with one bird between all of us, but that didn't make the hunt any less enjoyable. Craig, missed 2, I shot one that flopped over and then as I went towards it, the danged thing flew off!! Then I missed another one one the last 15 minutes of the hunt. Casey saw a few but only got the one with me. And Doug saw a few as well, but never got to pull the trigger. The bird we did get was great. Casey and I were driving around during luch break looking at new potential areas and we saw a deer hunter on a quad that was just putting him bow up. We asked him if he had seen any birds and he said that 7 or 8 had just walked in front of him on the road and that he had tried to shoot one with his bow but they spooked. He said that they had just flushed off the road into a dense stand of timber. We bailed out of the truck and grabbed Penny and went in there and right off the bat, one flushed out of a Douglas fir out of range for either of us. We made several large passes through the area and we couldn't find any of them. After a few miles of walking we decided to give up and head back to the truck. When we were about 50 yards off the road from the truck I reached down and turned off Penny's beeper collar and we were standing there BSing and not really paying attention when I noticed that Penny had run about 30 feet from us and was on full point. Right when we took about 2 or 3 steps towards Penny, one Blue Grouse rocketed out of the grass!! But, unfortunately for him, we were ready. He got a double dose from my gun and Caseys at the same time. We had finally done it.. Taken a Blue Grouse in AZ under my dogs point.. The right way!! Penny girl, ya done good!! It was one of those hunts that was difficult enough that it gets under your skin enough that you want to try it again and again. Tough conditions, cold, wind, sunburnt, windburnt, high alitude and not a whole helluva lot of birds out there. I can't wait till then... Penny did NOT enjoy the prestine views of the North Rim like we did!! She wanted off that rim lookout in a bad way!!
  8. I just got back to Tucson from my annual dove shoot back home in TX and thought I would share a couple of pics from opening day. I hunted on the lower Rio Grande Valley east of El Paso and let me be the first to say that the sheer numbers of birds was unbelievable! There were so many Whitewings that you could literally just random fire into the air at any given moment and a bird would drop. Just as many Mourningdoves and Collared doves as well. I started the shoot off with my 20ga.( another story) but it was just too easy. I ended up using my ol 1922 L. C. Smith SXS .410 just to make it interesting. heck, you could have used a tennis racket and got a limit, no problem! I have never been to Argentina, but I imagine that this is what it would look like. It was unreal!! Days 2 and 3 were just as good too.. And the pups had a blast!!
  9. Well, here is the situation. I bought a brand new Beretta 686 Onyx Pro 20 ga. back a few months back in May and had only shot it on the trap range only once and had shot a few pen birds while training prior to this opening weekend of dove season. While I was out yesterday afternoon, I noticed a large crack had developed right behind the trigger guard. This was the first time I had really even shot the thing! What gives! It's a new gun. I mean, when you pay a couple of thousand dollars for a product that carrys a name of quality such as Beretta, you would think you were pruchasing a quality good that you could have for the rest of your life. I guess I was wrong. Luckily, I had the foresight to pack along my little ol' 1922 SXS L.C. Smith .410 to get me through. And she never lets me down!! I am still in west TX right now, but am headed back tomorrow to Tucson and hopefully, on Tuesday morning, I will get over to the sporting goods store where I purchased it and either get another one, or buy a different brand comepletly. I need a gun before Fri. because we are headed up to the Utah border on Fri. for the Blue Grouse opener. Has this ever happened to anyone else out there?
  10. Josh, great bucks!!! For all you 36b guys, I saw a buck of the same caliber as those in Josh's pics today off of Ruby rd towards Arivaca lake. We jumped him out of a pretty easy to hunt canyon. Steep, but short. Just a heads up! Saw 4 pairs of Mearns today too down in Sierra canyon too!!! I can't wait till Nov.!!!!!! Theres just something about those little boogers that I can't get enough of....I love em.

    Who's been scouting?

Brett, I was in 36b the other day and glassed a doe with a fawn about the size of the one in your pic down off of Black Mesa. I watched the fawn lay down, and snuck over there to where I saw him go down, and got within 1 foot from him frozen in place, curled up in a ball. I put my gloves on, and leaned in real slowly and lifted his rear leg up to see if it was a buck or doe. He never moved an inch! Only have gotten out once in 36c and glassed seven deer, but nothing to get excited about. All about the size of the little buck in your pic. We are going to have to cancel our bear hunt in 27 this year as well. I have to be in TX over labor day weekend. I think I'm gonna try to chase a big ol Axis buck around when I get over there.
  13. This old hand is as tough as nails!! I wouldn't think that someone half his age would make it through something like that... http://www.borderlandnews.com/apps/pbcs.dl.../508120351/1001

    How bad is Southern AZ?

I didn't post the article to try to keep all of you from hunting in that area. I just wanted to post the article to show people what is really taking place down in those units. By all means, go and enjoy your tag. I know I will be. I really encourage everyone who hunts down in the 36 units to pack a pistol with them at all times and try to camp near the major roadways. Also, if at all possible, camp in groups, ie have several camps in one small localized area. No one should ever have any trouble in those units if ya just use a little common sense. I'll be out there on our Oct. hunt. Stop by and have a beer or 2. We'll be camped off the west side of 286 at mp 8.
  15. We went out a couple days ago with a buddy and our dogs before it got too unbearably hot and put a few birds out for the dogs and my new pup, Virgil. It was his very first intro to live birds. He performed beyond all of my expectations. He is almost 12 weeks old. I thought I would share a few pics with y'all. Hope ya'll enjoy... Here is one of my favorites.. He sure was surprised when I flushed the quail out of the grass in front of him. Look at those ears!! If you look carefully, you can see the quail in mid air in the middle of the pic. And here is a pic of of my pride and joy, Penny, with a nice point... Can't wait till bird season opens!!!! Thanks for lookin...

    How bad is Southern AZ?

Oh yeah, if you couldn't tell by the blatant sarcasim, I was kidding.. Read this and make your own desicions on the 36 units.. http://www.tucsonweekly.com/gbase/Currents...t?oid=oid:71525

    How bad is Southern AZ?

I don't know where all these other guys are getting all thier info from. Don't listen to them. There are no illegals or dope crossing down there. And its a pristine habitat too. No trash whatsoever. And no coues deer either!!

    Badgers

i see at least one every week crossing hwy 286. They seem to move right before dark. I saw two last week though during the middle of the day. I gues cuz it was cloudy and really cool out.

    training day pics

Thanks for the positive responses on Virgil. He sure is a hand full still. My Brit, Penny, had finally gotten to the age where she is calm and fully trained. And what do I do, I go out and start the whole process again!! Puppies are a handful for sure, but in the end they are definately worth it. Doug, if you want me up there for opening day, consider it done. I have been looking forward to hunting grouse all summer. But I don't think Virgil is going to be quite old enough for that one. It'll just be me and Penny. But watch out by Nov when you head down here to hunt Mearns with us!! It's gonna be the dream team in the Mearns hills... Penny, Rica, and the rookie, Virgil!!

anyone gonna be carying new gear this year?

I guess you're right, Casey. I forgot to mention the new pup! If all goes well, I think the Mearns quail are going to be in big trouble this season if Virgil has anything to do with it!!

Hey Casey, does my brand new Berretta O/U shotgun count??? Cuz I'll be totting that thing around more than anything this fall.

    Hunting in 36C

Brett, my message wasn't directed towards you or anyone else. It just seems that anytime a thread on this site is about one of the 36 units, it always turns to illegals and the BP not catching them or something to that nature. I just had to get a few words off my chest is all.. It is kinda personal to me ( if you know what I mean.. which alot of you on here do) Your analogy was right on the money.

    Hunting in 36C

Well, that may make you sick, but Bullwidgeon was right, you have no idea what may have been going on at the time he drove by. There could have a ton of things going on at that particular time, ie. another Agent in need of help, a call that just came out over the radio, a group spotted, a vehicle that needed a closer look at etc.. But then again, he may have been going home. Thats why there are more than just one shift. Don't you like to go home after you get off?? Contrary to belief, Agents do like to go home and have a life outside of work. Remember, it is a job. And alot of times, just because you see an agent hauling butt out of the field doesn't nessarily mean he's going home. He may still have aliens to process, a federal procecution to do, or any other tons of given paperwork to do. There is so much crap going on out there in those units at any given time that there could be a thousand agents out there and not cover the area adequately. Its a big chunk of property to try and manage with that amount of manpower. And don't forget... There is ALWAYS more of the general public out there at any given time than there are agents. That equals more eyes to find the illegals and mules that are out there.. and make it seem that BP is nowhere to be found. Don't knock someone till you walk a mile in their shoes. You want someone to bitch to about the problem, don't do it to the BP. We are the only ones out there actually trying to do something about it. If you got a problem with illegal immigration, talk to your Congressmen and the people who can actually do something about it if they really wanted to. I'll get off my soapbox now.
