Last year, on Sept. 27th, I jumped a group of 6 bucks together and they all still had velet on execpt the big boy in the group. He was already polished up. And there were some really nice bucks in the group that still had velvet on.

AZ bird hunting question
Kilimanjaro posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Well guys, I have a question for all of you AZ natives. I have always heard that the are a few spots in the state that have a huntable population of Blue grouse. Now, being pretty new to the state, I wouldn't have the first clue where to go to find a few. Everything I've tried to look up has been pretty vague on details. Just basic info.. So, have any of you seen any Blue Grouse while out scouting or hunting before? Last year, we took a trip to the south rim from Flagg. That highway ( I believe it was hwy 180) out of Flagg seemed to have good grouse habitat off of it. Good aspen stands, tc.. It looked good to me anyways.. We were thinking of going up there to try. Maybe out around unit 1 as well. Like I said, we have no idea. So, can any of you help me out? I've been wanting to try this hunt with the dogs since I moved to AZ. Sounds fun. Mid. Sept., bulls bugling all around, nice cool mornings, and me and the dogs knocking down a few grouse in the quakies. Cool!! Let me know!!! -

If we can find a bird or 2 in the SF peaks, why not just hunt there? It'll be easy traveling on you and Rica!! But if the White Mts are callin ya, you know I'll be game to head there too..Either or...Both sound good to me . We'll see after all the tags come out to make any final dates. Would late Sept- early Oct. be a good time?? I'll be in TX on Labor day weekend anyways. Gotta be in another wedding... I guess their trying to make me practice for my own!! And on Sept. 17th, we are still headed to MT for the week. But after that, I'm game. Maybe we can get azyoung to spill his beans on a few of his honey holes!! Give me a ring when ya get a chance to.... -

Doug, what do ya say? Want to give it a go? I have been wanting to try this hunt since I moved here. I'll load Penny up and we'll take her and Rica out into the hills for a couple of days. Jeff, want to give it a go too? Sounds like it could be a fun way to kick off the season. We'll call Casey too. Give me a shout. Thanks for all the info guys. -
It started by lightning last Thurs. And there are planes and choppers dumping slurry on it almost nonstop. The Madera canyon road is blocked off from traffic, but the Sheriff let me thru up to the Box canyon turn off, which is pretty close to the fire. I could see just how big the fire had gotten. I watched them drop slurry over and over. That was on Tues. It now has grown to over 12,000 acres and it is still out of control. Mostly cuz its in such steep areas that they can't get in there and work it on foot. They are laying a fire line around it in all the areas that they can get into on foot. This thing has the potential to get big and outta control.... It is also begining to threaten MT. Hopkins and the homes in Madera canyon now. My buddy is a forest ranger up in Madera, and he said he's seeing coues deer pour out of the hills. They have been seeing them as far as I 19. A few bears too coming out towards Patagonia.

Well, I just couldn't stand not sharing the pics I have of my new pup! heck, I haven't even got to pick him up yet. He is 6 weeks old as of 2 days ago. I have about 2 more weeks to wait. I got a feeling that he is going to be one helluva bird dog. These pics were taken yesterday. He sure was hammin it up for the camera! One of my best buds back home in TX has this litter and has some of the best bloodlines these dogs have to offer. I have just been waiting for the right pup. I was waiting for the right breeding, color pattern, etc. and this little dude has fit the bill to a tee. He said he had this pup picked out for me since the litter whelped. I think he'll do just great. I feel like that proud dad bragging about his sons base first hit at the ball game! I haven't had an English Pointer in about 5 or 6 years now. I forgot how much I enjoy them. I can't till this fall to see him and My Brit tearin up the Mearns hills out here in AZ!!! What do ya'll think, we are thinking of naming him either Kanaan (pronounced Caynan) or Virgil. Give me some input on that boys.... Hope these couple of pics bring a smile to your day as only a puppy can!!

Thanks everyone for all the kind words about the little toot. We are still in limbo on what to name him, but I think after he comes to the house next week, his most commonly used name will be what most new puppy's are, Dammit!! And if all of you don't mind, I'll post some more as they come. Travis ( breeder) said he was going to send me a few of him in the yard with a hobbled pigeon in front of him. Again, thanks....... -

Stan and everyone else , thanks for the kind works.Stan, if that litter is out of that buddy of yours that hunts Mearns pretty religously, I'd snatch one up ASAP!! They are really good dogs and since they are fairly uncommon, they haven't been polluted with "show dog syndrome" if ya know what I mean. And if I am right about whose litter it is, it sounds like the breeder has some good dogs already. And on top of that, they are really beautiful dogs to boot!Go get ya one Stan!! Give me a ring and we'll talk.. -
I keepin' my fingers crossed on this one. Still checkin every day.... I hope we draw that goat tag!

Bear Video
Kilimanjaro replied to hunterofcoues's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
That thing actually came out of the mountains right near my house and wandered into town. There was a write up in the paper yesterday and it seems that there has been a bear spotted around my house nearly every year! And that one yesterday was a damned nice bear too!! Thats typical of my luck... We hunt our butts off and don't see nada. And then the darn things come down the hills and into our backyard! -
That crazy old hag better thank her lucky stars that it wasn't me that she pulled that pistol on. If it was, that would have been her last mistake. I sure hope that this thing gets resolved reasonably soon, cuz I want to go up there this fall and try to do a little coati hunting in the creek!

Very cool!! I actually found our old house back in TX! It took me about 5 minutes, but after I got my bearings on the screen, I found it quick. I just wish it zoomed in a little closer! Thanks for the site.... -
Hey Chris, in one of your recent posts, you said we all need to contribute to this site by posting info, stories, pics and other goodies that we can all enjoy. Well, I have enjoyed all of the pics you have been posting lately, so here are a few of my own. Enjoy.... Here are a few of when I worked as a guide over in Africa.. just a few of my trophys I cherish... Not one to thump my own chest, I just thought I would try something a little different for a change of pace and scenery on the site for a little while. I have TONS of hunting pics to share if ya'll would like to see them. Lets see if this works!! (trying to post the pics thru the site this time!)

Last year, we hunted our butts off in unit 27 and all we had to show for it was a nice sunburn!! We did see 2 the day BEFORE season opened but nothing after that. I know we were in the right spot for a big one cuz we ran into ol' Bullwidgeon in the same spot. He told us he had taken that huge bear of his out of that same spot the year before. But, I'm already getting pumped about giving it another go this Aug. Maybe this is the year!! Great pics......

Yeah Chris, I took full advantage when I could and got some of the greatest opportunities ever. I got to go to Africa twice for about 6 months apiece and to New Zealand once for 5 months. Canada as well. But all good things must come to an end and now, instead of guiding and doing taxidermy, I get to hunt and catch illegal aliens and get paid dang well by the US govt. Oh well, the pay is better now than it was!! And I'm still doing taxidermy as a hobby. But man, weren't those hunts fun. Alot of folks would just look at those pics and say that is just some rich man's kid reaping the benifits of Daddy's wallet, but I did everyone of my hunts on my own and for FREE!! I did all that on my own. Nobody else's money. heck, I was getting paid to be there! Aoudad hunting is a blast. I am fortune enough to have a buddy with a ranch that has them on there free ranging in the TX panhandle. It is always a good time up there stalking rams when we get the chance. Here is one we got last year when I went home on my antelope hunt. We went to the ranch after the goat hunt and got lucky and found this dude. here is the goat from the day before. He is my first and only goat so far,and he could have made the 2 yr B&C book had I entered him. Net 82" And since this is a COUES whitetail forum, I guess I should post the ONLY pic of a coues that I have! Myself and 2 buddies drew the Nov hunt in 33 last year and we hunted our tails off. Me and Kevin were holding out for 90" or better, but ol' Rich here wanted to draw blood on that first evening. But if you haven't had the opportuntiy to hunt ANYTHING in 5 years, I guess you'd be a little trigger happy too!! We were pumped about this little dude when Rich put him down at about 300 yards. I was really happy for Rich. It was all of ours first coues hunt. Me and Kev never did pull the trigger on that hunt. The only pics of whitetails I have are of the wrong variety on this site!! But, I am going to change that this fall!! By the way, that chamois hunt has one heck of a story behind it if anyone cares to listen. I know Firstcoues ( Casey) and Redrabbit ( Doug) have already heard it, but if ya want to, just let me know. Just a hint, it involves a LONG fall, Medivac chopper rides, and a long stint in the hospital and therapy!!! This sharing pics is getting to be quite fun!! Take care.......

Nice pics!! What unit is the bear out of if you don't mind me asking. I plan on having him at my house come August!
-
Hey, what do ya know..... It worked!!!!!!!!!!! Yeahhhh..

Chris, the funny thing is that this whole time I never saw that damned IMG at the top!! I could have done this a LONG time ago! I have had a photobucket membership for a couple of years. I guess I should have looked up when posting instead of watching my chicken pecking on this key board!!! Anyways, the critters in the previous pics are all animals I took over there in '01 when I was working as a guide. All except the leopard! They ain't gonna give their guide a 9K kitty for free!! I was there when the hunter shot it. We hunted that cat for 10 days before we got him. Now that I know where that IMG is on the screen, I'll start throwing out a few pics every now and then, just to keep some color in the site. Thanks for all the kind words everyone.. By the way, them striped mules are a heck of a lot harder to hunt than you would think!! They can hear and run and see just as well as any deer out there.. Here are a few more just for giggles.... And yes, Ive killed a few desert deer too!!!! This old buck was taken out in Balmorhea,TX in '02. I am pretty sure I missed this same buck the year before when he was about 20" bigger. He scored 150 even and was aged by a TX Parks and Wildlife biologist at 9 1/2 yrs old!! Thanks for lookin........

I sent them to Amanda so she could put a few of them up. I just can't figure out how to make the pic come up on the screen when you you click on to read a subject. I have some of my pics saved in the engine Photobucket, but on this site, when you try to post a pic with them, it just gives you a URL tag to click on. Hopefully, Amanda will show me how to do it the right way on her site.

One more time, I hope..... If not, someone tell me how to use the site's pic server. I always use photobucket's, but on this site, it just posts the jpg. to click to view instead of showing the actual picture.. Ayuda, por favor.....
