Ugly, Your explanation was exactly what I was trying to say in my response to post #11. My preference for squaring points would help combat the lower point groups getting a larger share of the tags, perfect no, better yes, imo. The example of 3 bp vs 2bp isn't the problem in most people's eyes, they are too close in waiting time. When we take a hunt with 6 tags (assuming this is the 1-2 pass), ten people with 10 points and 500 people with 1 point put in, odds tell us 5 people will draw from the 1 bpg, and 1 person from the 10 bpg. As a 10 bp holder I know my odds are 10 times better than any 1 pointer, I just don't like seeing the larger percentage of the tag holders being the ones that have not waited very long. If points were squared, the 10 pointers should now draw twice as many tags than the large 1 point group, seems more "fair", at least to me, but I know we do not all agree on this issue.

couesdeer, Be patient, it is easy to get frustrated at not drawing when you see others get multiple tags in a few years. You have enough bonus points now to really be picky on where you want to hunt, waiting a few more years (assuming you are an AZ res) for the most premium hunts will be worth it, trust me. I am sure they are out there, but I have not talked to one person who has waited for the best hunts and regretted it, they all tell me it was worth the wait. If you have waited 8 years, then you should now have at least 9 points, get the hunter ed point (if you don't already have it) and you have 10 entering next year's draw. You can be guaranteed a rut archery tag in multiple units with 10 points,.......choose wisely or continue to be patient

Your receipt the game and fish emailed you will have your hunt choices, I agree with the others, you must have put it first or second or there was a screw up from game and fish. I'd check out the Woolhouse area if I were you, you can glass, there is some water, and at least you won't have to deal with road hunters in there. Check out the little mountains like sponseller and the one that starts with a J (can't remember the name) fairly close to sponseller.

Remember that the odds are better on some hunts with less bonus points due to the large number of applicants in that bonus point group, it is a numbers thing. This is why bonus points need to be squared....

Very good info, thanks for posting up. How is the AZ score computed? Interesting to see the top ram score 6 inches higher b&c yet have a lower AZ score than the other auction hunter. Just wondering. -
I have a tripod set-up I am trying to unload. Solid Manfrotto 190 xv green aluminum legs with a Manfrotto 701 HDV fluid head up top. Rig is in good condition, I have used this set-up for about 2 years of minimal hunting, so it has some field wear/marks but nothing significant. Perfect working condition, 701 comes with two plates. Also included is a gun claw, I think I have used the claw once for about 5 rounds, I simply do not rifle hunt very much so I thought I'd let someone else get some enjoyment out of it. The 701 head is the recommended head for the gun claw, very smooth and solid, the gun claw website sells similar rigs and they all have the 701 head. Recent price searches for brand new 190 xv legs, 701 head, and extra plate equals $250 + $100 for the new version of the claw. I'd consider piecing it out but I'd like to unload the whole thing together, I'm asking $200 for everything. You can contact me through private message or email jurban1000@yahoo.com. Thanks, Jeff.

Rig is sold pending a meet-up tomorrow morning, I will update status tomorrow afternoon. Thanks to everyone who has inquired.

Saw on another site that a guy killed a 390 bull in unit 9, it is a smoker. Killed him at first light.

You might give the shuttle t's a look. I'm shooting 335 out of my rig and they fly like bullets. Not too sure about other heads but if you can't get a slick trick or shuttle t to fly good, then it is probably your rig. -
Excellent post cdent, thanks for clearing that up, and thanks for what you guys are doing.

Please disregard this topic, sorry about that.

Very cool and awesome job editing the footage together.

I was near Grants, NM all weekend scouting for elk and hanging cameras, the smoke and ash was terrible.

I have killed three bulls in the last three years with shuttle t's, all pass throughs, all the bulls died within a 100 yards of where I shot them. My buddy killed a bull last year with them as well, bull died within sight. They are a really tough head, very sharp, and they fly great. As you can probably gather, I would highly recommend them.

I was all set to put in for another late hunt for coues, but it just isn't going to work out to go down south this year. I'm exploring the option of putting in for 23 late as the logistics of the hunt would work for me this year, I figure I have about a 50% chance of drawing in the bonus pass. Just curious on some aspects of the hunt/unit. Are deer numbers fairly consistent throughout the unit? How is hunter pressure with the 85 tags? I'd plan on hunting the last 5 days of the year, weather/road worries? Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

I appreciate it, I will call you soon.

Saw the show last night, it was good. One of the few hunting episodes nowadays that a person could actually get something out, the host actually shut up and let the professional (Duwane) do most of the talking. Hunting television needs more shows where "real" professionals teach the audience something about hunting, not just some host showing up at a camp and shooting something. Shockey does a good job and the on your own show is ok , but that is about it anymore. The best hunting product placement in the world is examining what the outfitter is using.....

I have shot 3 bull elk in the last 3 years with shuttle t's. I killed my first AZ bull with them 3 years ago, one shot at 12 yards, pass through, then again at 50, pass through. Next year's bull was shot at 10 yards, pass through, then again at 20 yards, pass through. Last years bull was 47 yards, pass through. One of the best heads on the market in my opinion. Lots of heads are capable of pass throughs, it is your rig's set-up and arrow choice that has the most to do with it though.

There are certainly 350 bulls in 6A, and based on the shear amount of elk in that unit, there is definitely more than a couple. The problems lie in that I'd say that the 350 bulls in that unit deal with more hunting pressure than any other unit, just look at the millions of tags they've been giving out in that unit as of late. If you want to hold out for a bull based on his score, then just like the other thread says, more power to you, it's your tag and there's nothing wrong with doing that. I tell anyone I hunt with that is holding out for a specific score that looking for that special score bull involves accepting that you might come home empty handed. A successful hunt is defined differently by everyone, some consider the experience a success, some whether or not they kill, some whether or not they kill a big one. You need to look in the mirror and decide what will define your success on this hunt and you must be honest with yourself. If you truly want a 350 bull than shoot nothing less than a 350 and accept that you might just come home empty handed. If you want meat then kill the first bull that gives you a shot, if you pass a bull be willing to accept coming home empty handed. If the experience is what you are after, then just go out, hunt hard, and when one comes by that gets your juices flowing, kill him. The worse thing you can do on this hunt is come home after it's done and say I wish I would of done this or that, or shot this or shot that. That tells me your mind wasn't made up going into the hunt about what you truly want to get out of it. My advice is......no regrets.
