    Grandpa's Buck

I saw this section of the website and was very interested (I am fairly new to the website and am just now getting to see some of the forums). I love seeing the older pictures. I am young but something about seeing the pictures to go with all the stories that are told makes all the difference. Anyways, I thought I would post in here a picture of my grandfather, and his brother. This is their harvest for the year. He has told me so many times how they never ate beef, only venison because the beef was what paid the bills not what filled their stomachs (sometimes I question how the antlers tasted if they where only harvesting for the meat, ha ha). This picture was taken on our family’s ranch in between Montrose and Gunnison Colorado in 1961. In this photo somewhere you cant see my grandfather got one heck of a buck, everyone knew it was big but nothing was brought of it. About 6 years ago my uncle was taking in an elk of his to get scored and convinced my grandpa to let him take his old set of antlers that had been sitting in our families cabin for decades to get scored. The news came back pretty surprising; the scorer had it sitting at 209 1/4 if I remember right. He said they had to send the rack to be officially measured to be put in the record books. It came out to score right about 208 i believe, which put him about 10th or so in the record books at the time (I believe it has dropped since then). Anyways I just thought I would share the family story with the rest of you. Needless to say the rack is no longer sitting in the family cabin, my grandpa actually talked my very proper grandmother into letting him put it up in the house as a good conversation piece. I will attach a picture of the rack and grandpa posing for the local newspaper (got to love small towns!).
