It seems like nearly all hunts are getting like this. You should have seen the 7 deer hunt with over 1000 tags. I was in there this morning setting traps and there were a ton of people out. Just keep at it, hunt harder than the rest and you'll get it done. Saw a big herd in Schultz at sunrise yesterday hitting water and saw a really nice bull out in the juniper flats this morning. They are there.

Where are you located?

Sunday evening I was able to harvest this buck. Defiantly not the biggest but I feel very fortunate to harvest any animal with a handgun. After fighting the wind all morning and passing on three other bucks that day because I didn't feel comfortable with the shot, I double lunged this buck at 95 yards off hand.

Heck ya. Love the single shot bolts. Is that an xp100 or savage striker?

What I learned was practice in you winter gear, i.e. jackets, gloves, beanie. I think its often over looked on the late hunts until you get there and realize technique or even ability to draw back is is very different when your all bundled up.

I've got the third peaks hunt in 7e. Goal is a 300 or better bull with a handgun.

Seriously, people make a much bigger deal of this than it is. The area to the north east of flagstaff ( doney park) hardly goes a year with a positive test for plague. I cant tell you how many times the CDC closed the play ground when I was in elementary school because of this, and in my entire life I can't remember of one person getting sick. It's not the middle ages, and if cought ,is treatable today.

I have an in reach explorer I bought off a member here a few months ago. Used in on a hunting trip in Africa. Worked great. Let me know if your interested.

I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to hunt the northern cape this year on a work trip. It was my first trip to Africa. We hunted obout 500,000 acres of De Beers diamond mine property with Madabula Safaris. No fence, free range Africa at its finest. I was lucky enough to harvest a springbok, blesbok, red hartebeest, warthog and grey duiker, all with a handgun.

Are you using a standard G2 frame? If so, any concerns about stretching the frame? Zero concerns. We have built encore and contender barrels in every caliber under the sun and the only thing that will hurt a g2 are belted magnums with factory equvilent loads. I have one contender barrel in 500 nitro express and the barrel and frame are doing fine even after a few hundred rounds.

Yes. It was Rooipoort. What an amazing place. Unfortunately we might have been some of the last people to hunt there. I guess after the whole Cecil thing, Debeers is caving to the do-gooders and is closing some areas to hunting. They just closed an area called Venetia, on the boarder of Kruger nat. Park and I guess Rooipoort is next on the chopping block.

4b........... just kidding. No clue.

Anyone can find big sheds. Only a die hard can find ones like that. If you can match that up I'll buy you a beer.

7e is looking really good. Lots of older bulls running around this year.
-
That's funny. I have see the exact opposite around flagstaff. I have seen more of the best back ends that I've ever seen but nearly every one seems to have weak thirds.
-
What? That's some backwards logic.

I think thats only for a potential world record. At least with sci. Not sure about b&c or p&y.

I think that score is really the deciding factor. It's a gamble. Shoot a bull hard horned or give him till his next set before your governors tag expires and others start chasing him. I think most rely on their guide to be able to pick a bull up towards the end of there tag, allowing it to be the biggest it can be.

Unit is pretty flat. Not much migration from my experience. Deer can be found throughout the unit any time of year. Red butte/ Skinner ridge area hold the highest densities from my experience but can be a real zoo with other hunters. If you are holding out for a bruiser buck I would recommend hunting the feeder canyons into cataract canyon on the west side. Methodically work each little finger and I would almost garentee you'll find a good buck. Some guys are hard core and will get on the 10 side of cataract, glass a buck, and drive 60 miles around back to 9 and try and relocate the buck, or vice versa, depending if they have a 9 or 10 tag.

Haha. If you have a heart attack now they get your money and they get to keep their deer That's why they do it! -
No Russ. My wife's uncle, 2015 if I remember correctly. Was hunting solo and had the think half packed out before his son arrived 8 hours later to help.

My dad works with Russ at his day job in Flagstaff. I'm not going to say where, as I don't want to put his personal info online. I garentee the Buff hunts are a drop in the bucket to what he makes at his day job. From my understanding he uses every scrap of personal and vacation time to do the Buff hunts. Sounds to me like a man with a huge hunting passion, kind of like a lot on this forum. Everyone who says money is behind the whole situation truly do not know what they are talking about. The game and fish work with Russ because he is the only guide who has devoted the time. Anyone who doesn't like how he does thing can get a guide licence put in the hours, get the clients, and give others another option.

Kind of thin in the bases. I think he hasn't quite hit his prime. But I've been known to be wrong before, just ask my wife.
