    Cow hunt Peaks Unit

The later hunts are actually better and have better draw odds. Once the big bulls breed out the smaller bulls break up the cows and you start seeing them lower elevations.

    Cow hunt Peaks Unit

Not true. The peaks can can be very difficult. Once the big bulls establish their large harems, the push strait up the mountain before sun up every day and all you do is chase bulges and never seem to catch up. If you hunt the Schultz burn area make sure you are at the base of the mountain or better yet at the water line road before sun up to get ahead of them. You will see a million rag horns at lower elevations but cows can be difficult. If you want to pm me I would be glad to give you any info I can on the peaks hunt.

    7e tactics - bull down

Awsome! I have the Nov archery tag. Good to know there are some non-typical genetics in there.

    Peaks Hunt 2014

The peaks wilderness hunt in 7e. Its a limited opportunity hunt they established after the Schultz fire to reduce elk pressure on aspen growth. Awsome hunt but can be tough. High elevation and very little road access.

    Flagstaff help

Still alive. Behind the spleen or he wouldn't have lasted that long. I would check the closest wallow. He is going to try and pull the arrow or roll and break it and when he does he will wallow to pack it with mud.

    Flagstaff help

I think I know what "canyon" you are talking about. Same thing happened to a bud last year who shot one and ran across the fence. We called the park service and said we could go in to retrieve it but couldn't bring our bows with us as that would constitute hunting. Never did find him though.

    My last Elk!

Bob, I love your excitement about your upcoming hunt over the past few months. I can definitely tell you have the same bug that I have got. I hope you shoot a monster and can't wait to see the post : )

    Successful Archery Tips?

I personally think most elk rut hunting is done before the sun comes up. Drive to what you think is a good spot, shut the truck off and just listen. If you dont hear anything give a cow call. If no response after a few minutes, give a juvenile bugle. If no response move on down the road a mile and repeat. When you get to an area with good responses, that is where you want to start. Calling or silent is a matter of personal preference and also situational. On the first few days of a hunt nearly any bull can be called in. When the hunting pressure increases, being silent may have its advantages. I love calling. A lot of people in the woods pick up a call at Wal-Mart right before the hunt and are terrible. Practice an cow esturus call, which I would define as a normal cow mew with a little rasp and excitation in it. When this is perfected you can call in bulls when a lot of other people tell you the rut has shut down or bulls have become call shy. Having a caller that can analize a bugle, drop behind the shooter by about 50 or so yards and maneuver himself to bring the bull infront of the shooter is also a huge plus. It is killing me this year becuase I dont have one september hunt to go on. Best of luck and make sure you post pics and a story when you shoot your bull : )

    Elk research project

I have had cams out in 7e all summer. There are a ton of collared and ear tagged elk in there now.
  12. What a shame. It is just a reminder to me that one bad set and the same could happen here in Arizona.

    Unit 7E

I have the 7e Nov archery tag. Do you have the early or late hunt? Ive spent quite a lot of time in the east part of 7e over the last few years from the archery deer season through the peaks only hunts. Not much experience during the late archery and rifle hunts. Just what I happen to see out there running my trap line.

There is one more main option. Ship to Nafa. My averages were $200 a cat higher at Nafa than what was offered to me at Kingman last year.
