New rifle caliber choice? You tell me!
pwrguy replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Long Range Shooting
My vote would be for the 300WM or 300Weatherby. Heavy rifles with brakes are really comfortable to shoot if you have a high tolerance for carrying them up mountainsides. The possibility of not being able to find supplies exists in just about every offering. Figure out what you like and buy lots of them when you find them. -
Bergers FAILED me horribly
pwrguy replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
That is poor performance. I seems like you had enough speed for them to work properly. I would try accubond or Accubond LR. I have had good results with with Amax as well but I am shooting a little faster than your 06. -
I have seen this problem a number of times, like has already been stated, many factors play into it. I had a friend hit one low in the lungs a few weeks ago that I doubt he would have ever found it had I not been spotting for him. The deer ran a hundred yards and piled up, but in some of the country here in AZ it might as well be a mile if you don't have any tracks to follow or some spots of blood.

I agree, both are good.

This is a good question. I have been wondering the same thing. Seems like you can get a ticket for just about anything these day's

What Lance said. You HAVE to have a good scope. Start with the rifle you have and see what you can do with it. Next start reloading if you don't already. If these 2 steps don't get you where you want to be, you can always move the good scope to a new or custom rifle when the funds permit.

So when do they post the results for 2015?

I shoot a very similar setup. Have not shot the Bergers much, 76 grains seems to be my sweet spot at just over 2900 fps

Congrats Bill, great job.

Coues With Big Heavy Bullets
pwrguy replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I have seen the results of 3 over the last few years with my 300 Win shooting 208 Amax. Devastating when the bullet is put where it is supposed to go, not so much when poor shots are made. There is a certain range for every bullet and rifle combination where you have to make the decision to shoot and expect good terminal performance no matter how accurately you can place the bullet. Just my 2 cents worth. -
Very nice, way to get it done

Good luck Adam, looks like a great time.

A different barrel will have a different chamber so depending on how the chamber was cut yes you could eliminate the excess freebore. I would do some testing first to see if it is anything you need to be concerned with. Shoot some groups loading your long bullets one at a time. If there is not a significant difference in group size don't get excited about loading the bullets close to the lands. I have not played with semi auto's much but that is how I would proceed if it was a bolt gun.

It looks to me like you have a huge amount of freebore in your chamber? You may have to settle for what will fit in your magazine.

There are definitely better than raghorn bulls here, but the good ones are few and far between. Go out and have a great time and good luck!!

Outstanding. Congrats on a fantastic buck!!

Well done, great buck
