    Estimate This Buck's Rack Please!

I would guess 95 to 100 nice buck. Go ahead and shoot him, then you can measure the easy way.
  3. Thats sick. It takes a real piece of work to dream up some crap like that.... What Pwerguy doesn't understand is that cartridges are not volatile...plastic jars of powder ARE. If you want to ship black powder, I would recommend FedEx; the are set up to handle this kind of thing and are certified to handle HAZMAT. The passenger airlines won't touch with you with a 10' pole. And if you try to sneak it on a passenger airline, you'll be eating from the end of a 10'pole...in a prison somewhere. If all else fails, you could buy your powder at your destination, or arrange to have it shipped there from an online retailer. Just my two cents worth from an airline driver who has had his cargo bay on fire...but don't take my word for it pwerguy does understand. If I was driving a plane and my hold was on fire, I would take 6 oz of powder in a container over the same amount of powder loaded into cartridges any day. If you think I am kidding go ahead and throw a box of cartriges in the campfire next time you are camping, make sure you stand real close so you can get the full effect Just my 2 cents worth
  4. No you cannot. However, you can take loaded cartriges...go figure. One trick I have seen done is to put black power into loaded cartriges and then unload them at you destination. I would not recommend this solution for anyone that tends to be forgetfull, the results could be catastrophic to say the least The simple solution is of course to just pick some up at the destination.

    Rifle project opinions needed

I have an worn out 7 mag that I am considering doing something with. My understanding is you have a limited amount of choices without changing the bolt face. 300 win mag, 300 wby mag, 338 win mag are the ones I have been told about. I like all these cartriges, and can't make up my mind, so the rifle just sits in the safe waiting

    Outdoorsmans Tripods worth the money?

I have been using one for 8 to 10 years. Good stuff, maybe a little overpriced...I would have to see what else was available before saying it is "worth it".
  7. Looks pretty good to me...but hey what do I know about a perfect sheep mount.

    Late Archery Bull 2011

Nice job, no easy hunt for sure. congrats
  9. I use the ball head from Outdoorsmans. I have put some heavy optics on it and it holds up just fine. I know a lot of people like the 2 axis heads, but I have grown used to the ball type. The one I had before this was also a ball head made by Bogen, It was decent, but it was like a boat anchor in my pack. I have heard very good things about the Jim White head. Good luck!!
  10. Funny you should ask, I usually only need 1 to 3. I like to carry 10 spares, 4 or 3 in the magazine depending on the rifle and then 1 in my pocket (total of 15). For the first time in a long time I hiked back to my quad a couple of weeks ago..... with .....lets just leave it at not very many spares
  11. Great buck I would say 105 to 110 gross

Oct 2011 Hunt - My First Writeup

I can definitely relate to the love/hate relationship. I had a similar situation with a buck at 300 yards, trying to line up on him sitting on a 45 degree hillside with limited rests for my gun, or even a flat spot to sit down on to shoot from the sitting position. All that being said, at least I didn't have to deal with the flu way to stick with it, your hard work will pay off, it just won't pay off every time.

0 for 4 but we had a great time!

That looks like a huge bear!! I went 0 for 1 myself but had a great hunt. I passed on some smaller bucks early in the week and missed a small one on the closing morning. It was great to get out and hunt for a full week with very few work interuptions. Great pictures by the way.

    Moon phase

I have not noticed a difference. I did notice that the deer this year seemed to be moving around a lot between 10:00 and Noon

    Crossbows????

I would have to see the specific wording, it doesn't look like they are talking about making it legal for archery seasons. I think crossbows could be a fun seperate hunt that is specific to crossbows only. It seems like the main fear of crossbows to most hunters is clasifying them with other bows that have to be held.

    found a horns and head

    I can answer that for you. Yes you can get into trouble, I know someone involved in a current court case that picked up what was obviously an old kill. I suggest you don't post finds like that or, call the G&F and try to get permission to take possesion of your find. You might try to preempt what is possibly coming by calling them before they knock on your door. Great find by the way, no way I would just leave it there.;

    Big sheds

Wow....great find. Now to find him on the hoof if he's still around.

    Rangefinder necessary?

What did we ever do without them. Not necessary but sure a handy tool to own.

Quality all purpose knife for field dressing?

I stopped carring multiple knifes and sharpeners. The only knife I carry is a havalon and about 10 replacement blades. I got stuck with a moose and no other knifes or saws last year, and I completely boned out that moose and took his head of with just the havalon. Not something I would have planned on, I alway's like to have bone saws around to work on bigger game, especially if you are going to be hauling it with a quad or truck. If you are in the back country, you are going to want to leave most or all of the bone except the rack. Anyway, I own several knifes that have mostly sentimental value and rarely get used.

    Bringing dog to hunting camp

It is going to depend on the dog, and the people you are camping with. I have low tolerance for barking dogs anywhere near my hunting camp, and even less tolerance if I'm sitting on a ridge glassing somewhere.
