I have a pair of 8X32 swaro's that I like for under 500 yards and hiking. Over that and I am usually setting up a tripod.

You make some good points. I really think the key is in the management of the forest, not the users. Morons will alway's find ways to start fires even when there are restrictions in place.

2010 December Whitetail. Back from the Taxidermist!!!!
pwrguy replied to bustedknuckleinc's topic in Taxidermy
That is a great typical buck, good length width and mass. Love it!!! -
I also am right handed left eye dominant. I have shot scoped rifles all my life left handed and that is the only thing I do left handed, I even shoot bows and pistols right handed. For me putting a scoped rifle up to my right eye is the most uncomfortable and awkward thing you could imagine. I would let the kid decide what he wants to shoot, forcing him to use his non-dominant eye may handicap him for some time. I have shot many critters with right handed rifles, so you don't have to run out and buy left handed rifles right away. That being said, I think he could learn to shoot either side over time.

The rifle I shoot most of the time started out life as a BDL. I had the trigger worked over by a competent gunsmith 20 years ago and have been quite happy with it. I have also known several people that have not. I would agree that trigger is #1 and you might as well put in a high quality adjustible one. Handloading is #2 in my book, you have to have the ability to give the rifle what it wants. #3 in my humble opinion is a good quality adjustable (turrets) scope with high quaulity rings and bases. #4 is stock. If you can afford Mcmillan or similar, pretty hard to beat, if you cannot afford, at least bed the action and float the barrell of the one you have. If you do these things you will have a good place to start provided you don't already have a burned out barrell. Everyone has a different opinion about cartridges and caliber, I think you can make almost all of them accurate, I would see how far you can go with what you have before jumping into re-chambering or re-barrelling....just my opinion. Good luck!!

Yes they do work some better than others. The ones already mentioned in this thread are well proven. I have been told some of them reduce the felt recoil in excess of 50%. Yes DO wear earmuffs, your rifle will become much louder down near the muzzle end of things

Nothing for me...oh thats right, I only put in for BP's

some nice deer there. It looks like a lot of the deer are coming in at night.

Wow!!! great buck...look how small his ears look next to that headgear. That is a no brainer with any tag.

Those are some cool pictures. Some of the better ones I've seen, it looks to me like there must have been bighorn sheep in the area at that time.

I love seeing them...just like that one

I don't think it was temp related. As you can see by the dates on the photos, the camera took great pictures and was working through one of the coldest months we have had in a while. I have not had any issues with the sensitivity, although I do get a few extra pictures of moving branches etc once in a while.

So I went out early this morning hoping to get almost 5 months worth of pictures. This is the second time this camera has done this to me. It seems like it takes pictures for a short duration, this time for about 4 weeks and then it just turns off or goes dead. I have had this camera out for 3 months and still had lots of battery left when I went to check it. I guess I need to start investing in a few new camera's.

+1 I hardly ever see a live one

I use an old canvas tarp mostly. However...an old piece of indoor carpet works fine as well, even a used one. I would find a carpet layer and see if you can score some for free.

No plug required for turkey, but can't see one needing more than 3 anyway. Thanks for the replies. This is what I thought, but there was some discussion in camp as my son showed up without his plug in the gun. I have to agree with you, I can't remember getting more than 1 shot before they were out of range

Does the 2 shell capacity that you use for waterfowl/dove apply to turkey? I can't find it in the regs. In other words..do you have to have a plug in your pump shotgun?

Pretty good. Amazing what these black powders can do these days, especially in the hands of someone who already knows how to shoot

I don't know what you should buy, but you better start practicing. September gets here quick

I have scanned a lot of photos in the past. You can teach yourself to do it adequately if you are patient. It is difficult to make them better than what you are scanning without a lot of practice and software, old pictures are going to look like old pictures. If you want to archive a bunch of photo's just because, go out and buy a scanner and learn how to use it. Don't expect it to look like the slides scanned above...unless you have slides. I think they have something that scans negatives as well? You might get better quality with that if you have them.
