i shoot 140 gr hornady interlocks, btsp, out of the rifle i shoot a lot. i have another that i shoot 130's from. my boy has a ruger featherweight and uses 110 interlocks out of it. on a coues deer, any decent bullet will work. i don't even remember why i started shooting the 140's but they work real well on anything. well, guess i just wasted a grand on a barrel. too bad, he seems like such a nice guy. i guess he bought all them trophies and stuff. wish i wouldn't o' paid him with hunnerds. he probly needs the money worse than me anyway. there's lotsa ways to shoot and lotsa ways to get it done. i think my new barrel will work real well. it worked great with the ol' factory barrel, before i shot it out. i can't wait to smell gunpowder on a cold morning and watch a bull go down. what is sad is that the story is true. i even kinked dozer's tail til he confessed of tryin' to shoot me. but he did say he wasn't tryin' to kill me, just hurt me a little. what ticks me off is my kid didn't clean up the round so i could use it. he just chunked it in the trash. still encased in the turd. i thought i raised him better. i took my .300 to a guy today for a new barrel. we were talking about stuff and i mentioned a 1 in 8. he had one there, for a special application. the one he's getting me is sorta wierd twist too, 1 in 11. just for 165's. he said 8 inchers were rare but he'd fit up a few over the years. with all these new cannons in .30 cal i'd imagine they might be used a fair amount. guys using a warbird or a .30/.378 with big 220 solids or copper for african stuff would have a real need for one. when i made the statement about a 1 in 8 i was just trying to illustrate to folks that there are a buncha different twists for .30 cal and there isn't one single twist that is optimum for all weights. a lot of folks don't have any idea what barrel twist is. i saw a twist chart just a couple months ago that recomended a 1 in 8 for 220's. so i don't think folks are actually crazy to have one. i remember trying to shoot 110 gr '06 ammo. bullets were made for an m1 carbine. about 3 or 4 inches at 100 was about it. i remember one wierd thing. i had it sighted in with 150's and it would tear the bullseye out. with the 110's it hit several inches low and several inches to the left. once you get a .308 cal dialed in they are an accurate sucker. but different weight bullets will do weird things out of the same barrel. that's why a guy needs to be cognizant of what he has. my boy bought some bergers for his .264 mag. supposed to be great bullets. wouldn't shoot less than about 2 1/2 inches at a 100 yards. they were 130's and other 130's shot fine. but the berger is a lot longer than the other ones and needs about a 1/2 inch quicker twist to shoot right. we got to looking on the box and it even said it. that's why i like my .270. a 1 in 10 works fine for em all. now that's funny right there. i gotta friend who was stayin' with his gramma in texas when he was a kid. she come packin' in a cat and told him to hold it. before he realized what was goin' on she wrapped about 6 inches of balonie string around her finger that was hangin' out it's butt and yanked it out. he said it was like holdin' onto the bar of a chainsaw while somebody else started it. any accident that will damage a cheap scope will do the same thing to an expensive one. alaskan guides are ok scopes. bushnell makes a couple that are pretty good too. the difference in price is mostly the glass, and there is a really big difference. and in the construction of it pertaining mostly to keeping out the weather. most of the expensive scopes, of which leupold really isn't one, have some really special glass and coating recipes and have some extra good construction methods to insure the scope doesn't fog. they have tighter tolerances in their adjustments too. i like leupolds because they are a real good scopes and they're made in the U.S.A. but in the big scope of things ( i made joke) even leupolds aren't real expensive when compared to the scopes with z's in their name. but i have a buncha different brands. my boy has a 6-20 alaskan guide on a .17 fireball and it is a really good scope. but it isn't on a gun he's going to take back into the middle of nowhere with that he has to be able to trust completely. i have several burris scopes and they are really good too. i have a weaver on my .264. several old weavers on .22's. a really crummy bushnell on my .223. no better than my eyes are anymore just about any of them are better than i am. guarantees on scopes are only good after the fact. what is really important is that they work well and that you never need to use the guarantee. a guarantee is worthless when you're 5 miles from the truck and you can't see through your scope while the biggest buck you ever saw was walking away. i have a , 300 mag model 70. "Farkiller". last time i shot it wouldn't hit too good. it had an old leupold on it that had been treated pretty hard and i assumed it was bad. anyway, when i retired my kids bought me a high dollar varix3 6.5-20x44 leupold that has dots out to 500 and then a turret out to 1000. all customized to my special recipe handloads. neat scope. has my brand, intials and a big bull elk etched in it. took it the range and it still won't shoot. scrubbed the bore up good and the throat is going away. R.I.P Farkiller. me and my kid got to thinkin' about it and it probably has over 2000 rounds through it. maybe a lot more. so i took it in for a transfusion. 26 inch schnieder, muzzlebrake, square and lap the bolt, square the action and a few other tricks. so that neato scope they got me cost me another grand. i hope they don't even git me a xmas present. i won't be able to afford it. just dropped it off this morning. i can't wait. with what is probably the best shot in the world (me) shootin' it, when the word gets out, animals will see my truck and say heck with it and give up. Lark.

singleshot, sierra makes a 125 flat gr hollowpoint in .307 for a .30/30. they turn the little thing into a decent rifle. i've shot em for years and they work great in a tube mag. Lark.

oh well, i've read a lotta charts that say you should use an 8 inch for a 220. whatever. a 220 gr .30 is about useless anyway. the only times i've seen anyone try a 220 it was a miserable failure. if you need a bullet that big you oughta move up to a .338. i've seen guys use 220's in an '06 and it's pathetic. you might get some performance in a .30/378 or a warbird but that is a big long bullet with a lotta barrel drag. Lark.

i shot an 'o6 quite a bit for a few years. a colt built on a mauser action, had a micro-grooove barrel. i shot 125's almost exclusivley. real fast and real accurate. they kill the heck outta deer and elk. i always just used sierras and 4320 powder. one thing to keep in mind tho, .30 caliber is very sensitive to barrel twist. a rifle that shoots a 165 or 180 well, may be twisted too quick to stabilize a stubby 125 well. as far as the bullet killing, they do fine. i don't know what the twist was in my old colt, but it shot 125's well. i remember when i was a kid a lot of old timers talked about the wide range of bullets available for an '06. you could buy factory loads from 110 to 220 grain qnd they would brag about how they could hunt anything from coyotes to moose with one. well, you can, but most rifles won't shoot all those bullet weights real good because there is such a wide range in barrel twists needed to stabilize the different weights. for a 220 you need like a 1 in 8" and for a 110 you should shoot probably a 1 in 15". most '06's are 1 in 10 or 12 and will shoot 150 to 180 well. Lark.

How to stop (or decrease) trail camera theft.
.270 replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
just what are the laws about trail cameras? didn't the forest circus decide a couple years ago it was illegal? Lark. -
what if it was deer seaon and a guy had a tag and was walking around with camo and rifle and a couple granola bars called it in and were scared? granted, it probably wouldn't have been in snottsdale, but it's still the same situation. there was no reason to arrest this kid. like i said, i pack a gun on my bike or when i'm riding a mule or horse around. what if somebody decided i scared em? we have liberal gun laws in Az. folks need to be aware of it. a person shouldn't get arrested for excercising their rights. cops should use discretion. i don't have a problem with em investigating it. they have to. but use some sense. Lark.
-
ajohunter is right. carry a gun about anywhere in this state and it's legal. i don't agree with him packin' the toy gun. don't understand the need of that at all. but it ain't illegal. not even in snottsdale. i think scottsdale just screwed itself. any attorney could stuff this someplace painful. typical cops. he's lucky they didn't shoot him. i pack a .45 every morning when i ride my bike. stop and talk to my cop neighbor several times a month while he's out joggin' and all he says is he wishes the pistola was his. Lark.

CUR-WOLF IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA???????
.270 replied to azpackhorse's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
only thing positive to say about it is that at least it is traditional mexican gray wolf country. i was told that the reason they didn't try it in the south was because there was so much private land and they couldn't get the control they wanted. so they put them in the gila wilderness and the blue, where there never were very many to start with. one thing that may come from it is better border enforcement. they might actually to try to keep the illegals out of wherever the area is so these pen raised dogs can survive. like all gov't programs, this too will is destined to be a failure. in fact, like all gov't programs, it is a faillure before it even starts. they'll never reach a sustainable population, which they don't want to do because then they lose their control. it will just be another hardship on the residents trying to scratch out a living there. as long as the gov't is willing to pump money into it, which is forever, the program will go on, but it has failed before it even starts, because they do not have even one pure wolf in the program, the program is administered by stupid people who are willing to perpetuate a lie to start with, they don't have any of the wolf/dog crosses that are immune to disease like wild wolves are, and they don't have any of the wolf/dog crosses that can make a living on their own. just another farce that is designed to pry folks off the land and put it more and more into federal control. Lark. -
we used to always apply my boys for the jr. deer hunts. they never got a tag. they always got deer in the general season tho. but i think the jr hunts are a good deal. need to get kids interested in the sport. and keep em interested. we never applied for the jr cow hunts because they always wanted to shoot bulls. jr hunts are a good thing and i don't think they are detrimental to the big picture. i sorta wish they'd have some kind of a seniors season for elk. let them ol' geezers have a chance at one last bull. but i mean old too, like 75 and older. the objective of junior seasons is to get kids interested in hunting by helping them have a good experience right off and giving them an opportunity to hunt without a lot of competition and a time of year that isn't so harsh. and i think 10 is just fine to start hunting big game. i remember when i was kid trying to keep up with my ol' in rough assed country and freezin' my butt off in the morning and cookin' in the afternoon and runnin' outta water and draggin' bucks for miles. i wouldn't trade those experiences for anything, but most kids aren't as tough as i was and having the kind of experience when they first started might run a lot of kids off. especially these little softies i see runnin' around now. Lark.
