so i guess the stuff i read was wrong. even tho it was writ by some scientist. what the heck do they know? and even tho the guy who did the autopsy on macho said the drugs and stress probably really hurt him, who the heck is he to have an opinion like that? i mean he's just an expert and all. and what sam did does apply and his work is used daily around the world. i don't see how you can trivialize decades of work like that? oh wait, i guess he didn't know what he was doin' either. we can argue lifespan till the hogs come home. if they'da left him alone he'd still be alive. heck, next time anyone sees an old buck or bull they best shoot it because he's close to whatever somebody says his life span is and we don't want any old critters in the way. my only concern is that the usfw will turn the jag into another fiasco like the mexican wolf. you coues hunters had best be aware of it, because guess where the handfull that are left live? right smack in the middle of the sky islands that support the coues. and if they come up with some sorta program, it ain't gonna be friendly to anyone who hunts or lives in those areas. sorta sad too, because like i've always maintained, jaguars are one cool critter. too bad this country isn't more condusive to them so we had a bunch of em. there are definitely fewer of them now than there were, but they require truly wild country, and there ain't any that left here. too many highways and towns. they can set aside some place for em, but i kinda doubt they stay there. RIP Macho. Lark.

this is just plum stupid. i'm not a big fan of the proposed jaguar recovery effort, mainly because there have never been very many here anyway and Az. ain't wild enough for them to ever establish a real population of em anymore. simply too much development and too much private land in southeast Az. for it to happen. don't get me wrong, they are one cool animal. but i really don't believe there have ever been more than transients in Az. they're a tropical animal that thrive in the jungle and wet country, like belize and honduras and the country where central and south America come together. if there were very many of em, my grandad and his brother would have caught more than they did too. i read the other day that they knew of 6 of em in Az. in the past 30 years or so. i would have figured there were more than that, but that's the numbers they used. anyway, i can see it as just a way for huggers to control more and cause even more people hardship. but then again, maybe it will help with controlling the illegal alien problem in the area that the jags seem to like. who knows? but for the guys who are supposedly so concerned with the jags to contribute directly to killing one of em, well, it just seems stupid and very irresponsible. i can't think of a more stressfull situation to put an animal in, especially a big mean animal like a jag, than a snare. how long was this ol' guy in it before he was drugged and collared? just seems like a real sad ending to a pretty neat animal. so now i guess we're down to 5 jags. i hope like heck they don't cure the rest of em to death. good news. when is the season? wonder if guy has to get drawn? Lark.

i'd still bet this ol' predator would still be kickin' if they woulda left him alone. i read a deal last week that said their life expectancy was 22 years. do any of you have any experience with snares? just as well use a jaw trap. they are a mean tool. i have a friend who was a canadien game warden/wildlife biologist for years. decades. he retired about 10 years ago or longer. he spend years snaring, netting, tranquilizing and tagging all kindsa animals. most of it on bears. what he called tundra grizzlies and polar bears. spent years thousands of miles from anywhere doing his work. great stories. he said they inadvertantly killed a lotta grizzlies with the drugs they knocked em out with, because they faught it so hard. said the polar bears just laid down and went to sleep. whatever, i just kinda wonder about some of the tactics folks use when they are trying to "save" something. in my opinion, they didn't do this old beast any favors. years ago this whole country was a few towns surrounded by wilderness. now it's a few places that you can still call wilderness surrounded by civilization. there ain't much they can do to "save" jaguars other than screw with folks. the country ain't wild enough anymore. they should invest their efforts into helping them out where they thrive instead of making a mess out of places that have never had very many. might be hard way to look at it, but i don't see any kinda jaguar sanctuary in the U.S. that will be anymore than a hardship for folks that live around it. they are neat animal. if you ever get a chance read dale lee's book, i think it's called "the life of the greatest guide" or read hunter well's book "they call me hunter". you will get spooked just reading about jags. absolutely the meanest critter this country has ever seen. the lees lived in Az. when it was still wild and they loaded up and headed to belize and honduras to hunt jags, because there weren't enough of em even in mexico that they could have any degree of sucess that they could count on. this was over 50 years ago. if there ever was a day of the jag, it's gone. i don't think there were ever more than just a few transients this far north anyway. dang sure never any kinda numbers like lions have. Lark.

actually, bullet tumble is usually caused by a twist rate that is too slow. in a given caliber, a longer, heavier bullets requires a faster twist than a shorter, lighter bullet. some calibers aren't twist sensitive at all, like the .277 and .338 diameter. one twist rate is usually good for all bullets. other calibers, the .308 and .257 diameters always jump up here, are real twist sensitive and may require nearly twice as much twist to stabilize heavier bullets in the same caliber as required for lighter bullets. if you want to shoot a 220 grain .308 bullet you need a 1 in 8 twist. a 125 or 110 will probably need like a 1 in 15. bullet length compared to the diameter actually has more to do with it than weight. tam, that will be next. the obamanation will get into limiting driving soon enough. nothing gives the American public more freedom than the internal combustion engine, and there is nothing the obamanation wants to do more than restrict freedom. through "carbon" footprint bs, taxes, "green" cars, etc., they'll restrict the heck outta being able to drive somewhere. the problem lies with the fact that there are so many people, a number rapidly approaching a majority, who just sit around and are happy as long as they have a tv and food and a couple 40's a day. they don't care what anyone else does or how anyone else's freedom, liberty and way of life is impacted. and the obamanation is happy to supply them with what little they need because they can carry a vote. i wanna slug every idiot i know that voted us into this mess. it's gonna get ugly. Proposed change to Wild horse and burro act
.270 replied to cmc's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
i guess rembrant didn't get my satire. i was tryin' to use hugger reasoning for not shootin' ever one o' them stinkin' feral horses. c'mon dude, it was a joke. sorta. they did, according to scientists, start out here. but i heard that 90% of scientists agree with al gore too. Lark. -
Proposed change to Wild horse and burro act
.270 replied to cmc's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
actually, scientists say horses and asses originated in south America. started out there, migrated north and into europe and asia where they proliferated and were domesticated and then died out here. probly global warming or some deal. then the spaniards brung em back over here to rape and pillage the land and it's indigenous people easier and the rest is history. now we have wild horses and asses here again, just like they used to be. sorta like the mexican wolf is now. really, they did originate here. but i feel they should be removed from the land completely. they are a real hardship in places that really shouldn't be subjected to any more stress than nature does anyway. i'm a big fan o' equines, but not the wild ones in the Americas. -
this is a link to Az. senate bill 1115. you guys best read it and voice your opinion on it. http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?in...lls/sb1115p.htm scroll down toward the bottom. this is the anti chicken and dog fighting bill. this is to ammend the bill and strike the word "dog" and insert the word "animal". it will make sport hunting with hounds illegal in Arizona. there is a provision for "animals trained to protect livestock from predation and that enegage in actions to protect livestock", but not for sport hunters. it would also outlaw falconry and from what i see bird dogs. if a bird dog has to chase down a wounded animal, he has to fight it. looks like cow dogs would also not be able to be used, because they dang sure fight with cattle. pretty slick way to slip up and stop a lotta folks from doing what they like to do. this is how the adversary works. sneaky. one little freedom at a time. we're always yellin' at each other about little things we don't like about things that other sportsmen do and all the time we're gettin' snuck up on by these sob's. don't care where you stand on hounds, or bird dogs or cow dogs or whatever, if you like to hunt you best be against this. if you ain't against it, then you are against hunting. there is no gray area. Lark.

judd gregg decided he couldn't take the smell anymore and withdrew as obamanation's nominee for commerce secretary. he was the only republican obama nominated. i was real surprised when he accepted it in the first place and when they took away the census as one of his duties i kinda figgerd that it might be more than he would deal with. they wanted a talking head that would be a puppet. too bad, he was the only bright spot in that mess. Lark.

read the post called sb1115 on the hunting in Az. thread. it's importance is paramount. Lark.

a guy sent me an article awhile back that said that the biggest threat to America is no longer muslim terrorists or communists like russia and venezuela. said that now it is isreal. because obama was going to abandon them and leave them to themselves. isreal has the campability to hit anywhere in the U.S. with a nuke, anytime. and the guy that wrote it said he felt it was a real threat. they've sat around with their hands in their pockets for decades because we were on their side. if we ain't on their side, then we're against em. interesting read. Lark.

the sponsors are a democrat name nancy young johnson and a republican named johnathon paton. EVERYBODY should make dang sure to write em goth a letter. you can click on their names and email em. this is real serious fellers. and this is something sponsored in this state. not dc. something that we do have some control over. doesn't matter how you feel about dogs, it's about freedom. we have to stand together. one thing this guy has going against him is that he has already been sued and lost to some legal deer hunters that he ascosted on his place. they were legal in the fact that they are Americans and were hunting deer and were not illegal aliens. not for sure if they were on his private property. i would almost assume they weren't, of there wouldn't have been much of a case. but he did hold them agains their will and he lost the suit and it they were awarded a fair amount of $'s in the deal. anyway, that ain't gonna help him in any in this deal. i hope he wins this one for sure, but the other one ain't gonna help. i think he has appealed it and maybe can win in the appeals court. i think he is also a retired deputy sherrif. Lark.

well, bush's tax cuts literally saved me thousands and thousands of dollars over the past 8 years. i mean a bunch. obama's are gonna save us an average of $13 a week this year and $8 next year. if you qualify. and if you didn't pay any taxes, you get $400 bucks from the gov't for not making enough to qualify for the $13 a week. let me see, 13X52 weeks=$676. on average. guess i'll save it up and buy me a new gun. probly won't be able to shoot it by then because of some new law, but at least i'll have it. 'course that probly won't pay the taxes on one by then, too. but they got $30 million for some mouse in 'frisco. wonder if they are bein' endangered like gerbils? somebody tell me again, how am i doin' better than i was a couple weeks ago?............ Sportsmanswarehouse going out of business?
.270 replied to hawkeye's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
after my infamous credit card dealing with sw, i haven't darkened the door. but i don't want them to go out of business either. i reload a lot. thousands of rounds per years. i just chunked 14 empty 1 pound powder cans the other day. and i do that several times per year. shortly after sw opened it was real apparent that they didn't have much of a clue about what they needed to stock as far as components for reloading. they really got on the short mag and super short mag bandwagon and had a lot of brass that nobody wanted. but few bullets or powder that was usefull to me. when a hole in the wall like the pistol parlor or guns etc have literally 10x the inventory of a huge place like sw, it shows some real lack of vision and poor planning. but they have been that way from almost day one. when i had the big go-round, the ceo of sw called me. no bs. he called me. and he said that they had some real problems in keeping reloading supplies in stock and that they were working on correcting them. doesn't sound like they made much headway. but when i was at bass pro the other day, they really stunk too. piles and piles of stuff nobody wants and nothing in popular calibers. stacks of bullets nobody wanted and nothing in weights and styles that shooters and hunters use. and no powder. none. they had about 6 pounds of powder and half that was for shotguns. cabelas is a little better, but for a serious shooter and hunter, like me, they have a lot to be desired too. again, when little places like the well managed ones here in the valley have a decent inventory, it shows some real inexperience and poor vision by the big guys. and they have a lot of guys working there that are career clerks that don't have much experience with shooting. not really their fault either. it's the way of business. the more a guy knows, the more you hafta pay him. keep around some people that are sorta literate and can lift heavy things and you can make more money than if you pay a guy a lot for his knowledge and experience. it's the big box mentality. try to find someone at walmart that has a clue. and it ain't just shooting supply. try to find a decent pair o' boots without insullation or goretex. when was the last time you needed either in this state? again, no clue. Lark. -
this guy's place has been trashed, trespassed, stolen from and his rights have been trampled for decades. now he gets sued by folks who were in the country and on his property illegally, because they say he was rude. they'll probably win. lawyers are gonna have a field day under the new gov't of the obamanation. didn't it say he has helped in the arrest of 12,000 illegals? that's twelve thousand, not hundred. Lark.

that is a law that bush enacted shortly before leaving office and is also the one that obama is going to recind soon. it is a continuation of one that Reagan enacted that allowed unloaded firearms in a national park. i believe they had to be kept in your vehicle also. the original intent was so that someone travelling could stop off and see a national park and not worry about being arrested for having a firearm in their car. Bush took it a step further. the new deal they were talking about was recinding these laws and for some reason making interstates, or parts of interstates, part of the national park system. thus making it a crime to have a firearm in your car, if you are on that interstate, or part of that interstate. if i heard it correctly, and i think i did. for instance, if i-10 were part of the national park system, you wouldn't be able to travel to southern Az. from here, with a firearm. as it is now, there are parts on interstates that cross national parks, and if they enact this, if you had a firearm, you would either have to detour around them, or go home. pretty interesting the lengths, that these guys will go to to keep a guy from shooting a gun. Lark.

has anyone heard of what i'm gong to write about? and if you have can you expand on the topic? i want to know. a big part of my job is to drive all over this cotton pickin' valley and when i'm driving i listen to the radio a lot. yesterday on one of the conservative talk shows they were talking about one of the things included in the so called stimulus bill (c'mon we all know it has more pork in it than bacon) and they were concerned about one of the paragraphs that was going to include some interstates in the national park system. said the reason for it was because obama was going to strike the law that allowed you to have an unloaded gun in a national park (which bush actually changed to make it legal to have a loaded gun legally and even to carry a concealed gun in national parks that were in states that allowed CCW), therefore making it illegal to carry any firearm on the included highways, because they will be part of the national park system. evenif you're just passing through. i had to get out for awhile before they elaborated on what they were talking about and didn't get to hear the rest of it. but it spooked the heck outta me. i've said from the start that obama is going to let us keep guns, but he's gonna sign any legislation that keeps us from shooting them. this sounds like some sneaky, spooky $h!t to me. but it is exactly what i think we have to expect. i look for them to somehow outlaw ammo components, or ammo in general, but using some hazardous material designation on primers or powder or even lead. i also see some real restrictions on shooting ranges over lead and in plinking in general, over lead. i hate to get apocoliptic about anything. nothing aggravates me more than any kind of radical extremism. and these anti gunners, and liberals in general are extremely radical. the NRA gets a little extreme and radical, but i go along with the NRA in fighting any anti-shooting legislation, because you can't let freedom get eroded. because of the absolute stupidity of anti gun people they have to be in polar oposition. once the erosion starts, you never really stop it. we all need to take a hard look at what this obama guy really has in his heart. it's pretty scary. i mean really scary. not just guns, but everything. he's all for confining everyone he can and limiting freedom as much as he can. the ability to travel will be another thing he tries to limit. nothing makes the American public more free than the internal combustion engine. anyway, if anyone has anymore info on the national park/highway deal, let me know. i've looked, but keep coming to dead ends. and if you know anybody that voted for obama, slug em in the gut and ask em what the heck they were thinkin'. Lark.
