  1. the big fire of a couple years ago was an APS operated station. like almost all electric facilities, they are participant owned. but APS operates that one. the transformer fire at santan was just that, a transformer fire. it faulted inside and set the oil ablaze. i don't think anyone is gonna risk burning down a billion dollar asset to get a little rate hike. i just read that all units are up and running at full capacity and they are already starting work on installing a spare transformer. ain't gonna need to be a rate increase to cover a 230 transformer for sure. they ain't all that big.

hmmmmm. alla this talk of conspiracy and such makes me real curious now. bullwidgeon gets his 3rd elk tag in a row and ever game warden in the state is on a first name basis with him and one even confuses my butt with him. i'm thinkin' there is somethin' fishy goin' on between him and them warden fellers........Lark.
  3. i know, that's why jealousy never enters your mind . Lark.
  4. me and another feller was cruisin' the 101 a couple hours ago. gripin' about not gettin' drood for nothin' and just generally cussin' the game and fish, when along comes a game warden in a silver dodge pickup. i told the feller who was drivin' to slide up next to him and i rolled down the window, pulled down my britches and stuck my hairy butt out the window and mooned him. and he looks over and goes "hey bullwidgeon, how's it goin'. ain't seen ya in awhile. you shave or somethin'?" Lark.
  5. nothin' makes up fer lookin' like my butt. i mean it's a good lookin' butt, but it's still a butt. have fun on your elk hunt. after all, it's only u1. ain't like there's any elk there. ya butt lookin' wierdo. Lark.

    .270 bullet inquiry

bigger bullets don't work real well in a .270. i guess i should say, they're not my preference. i shoot 140 gr hornady btsp. just the interlocks. i bought a box of 130 gr interbonds but haven't got around to loading them yet. a .270 is fairly small caliber. small calibers should shoot lighter bullets. if you need a heavy bullet, get a bigger gun. i can't even remember why i started shooting the 140's, but i know they really work well in my rifle. it's a real old model 70, 24 inch barrel. it has a real long throat, so i can poke the bullet way out and get a lotta powder in it. i shoot 140's a little over 3000 fps. the reason i started using hornady bullets in general is because the sierras always seemed to come apart. but this may not be a bad deal, at least for deer. they killed the heck outta things for sure. i've never had an interlock come apart. and they very seldom go through. which to me is a good thing. all the shock and energy is staying inside the animal, doing damage to it, instead of using a bunch of left over energy to push a wadded up bullet across the landscape. i don't like pure copper bullets at all. too long, too much barrel drag, too slow and too stinkin' expensive. after last year's late elk and what i saw copper bullets do, i'd never have one. i hate chasing animals around waiting for them to die. i don't much care for nosler's, mainly because of the price. they are a great bullet for heavy animals. but when elk is the biggest thing i hunt, i can't see where they are a benefit. if you're going to shoot caribou or sheep or black bears in alaska, i'd use 130's or 140's. no need for anything bigger. my kid shoots 100 gr hornady interlocks out of his .270 wsm. for everything. they will tip an elk right over with a good lung shot. a .270 is made to shoot medium weight bullets fast and flat. it isn't an elephant rifle. load it accordingly. for factory loads, i'd suggest the hornady light magnums, federal supremes or any of the other well made styles from winchester or remington. 150's are ok in a .270, but they are the absolute max i'd evern think of shooting. they do hold their speed and trajectory a little better at long ranges. but how far are you gonna shoot? 165's are a joke. shoot like a rainbow. my dad still uses 130 gr sierras. 2 years ago he smacked a real good 6x6 bull with em. running flat out too. a .300 mag wouldn't have done any better. but he is still an exceptional shot. remember one thing, nothing makes up for poor marksmanship. a gutshot is a gutshot. doesn't matter how big the rifle is. Lark.

responding to muleskinner, if i'm not mistaken, the "director" can issue a permit for anything to anyone he wants. outside the draw, over and above what the biologists say is ok for the unit. a couple years ago, supposedly an old man who could never get an elk tag wrote the azgfd and told em to jump in the lake, he was going elk hunting and he didn't care if they arrested him and so on. he then got a tag in mail from the "director". i always assumed it was an urban myth. maybe it wasn't. but this is the first time i've ever really heard of it happening. too bad you didn't note the names. wonder if there is a way to see how many "director issue" permits go out every year? maybe i oughta quit bashin' shroufe and get me a sheep tag. this is a really interesting thing here. someone with some investigative skills oughta look into it. Lark.

    Preference or Bonus

bonus points and preference points are sorta like a pyramid scheme. sorta. after a few years there are so many people with so many points, that it really doesn't matter anymore. hunts that i used to get drawn for in colorado every year, now take 10-15 preference points. be pretty hard for me to start applying for a hunt now that will take a minimum of 15 years to get drawn for and by the time i got drawn, it'd be 20. when bonus points were started, everyone was real open about the fact that it wouldn't be too long until too many people had too many points for it to work well. i don't know what the answer is. in fact i don't think there is an answer. doesn't matter what kinda system you use, eventually it's going to reach a saturation point. that's what we have now. bonus points do increase your odds over someone with no points, but it doesn't do you much good when bunches of folks also have a lotta points. and every year, multiple folks with no points are going to get drawn over folks with lots of points. Lark.

    RESULTS ARE UP

some years back a guy i know and 3 other applied for the u1 early bull hunt and were rejected because the azgfd said insufficient funds in his account and he had written a personal check. well, being a smart guy, he went to the bank and got all his records. at no time, from the time he sent them the check until after the draw, did he have insufficient funds, or could he possibly have had insufficient funds because of a combination of circumstances or anything else. he called the azgfd and got an audience with em, they looked at his stuff and said too bad so then he told em the name of the attorney he had retained. they then proceeded to print them off 4 tags for their first choice. issued them in excess of the ones in the draw. if you really are certain, you do have a leg to stand on and there is past precedence to go on. this really did happen. there have been several cases over the years where the azgfd messed up and had to make it good. if you're sure you're right, get after em. Lark. p.s. my son who lost his wallet didn't even draw flies. don't know if the wallet deal had anything to with it or not. all the net said was "not drawn".

    finally after 28yrs!!!!!

28 years? heck, it only took me 26 to get my first Az. tag. that was 12 years ago. good deal, shoot a big one. cracks me up when folks gripe about goin' a year or two without a elk or goat tag. 'specially nonresidents. anyway, congratulations. make the most of it. Lark.

    RESULTS ARE UP

our clan got 3 miscellaneous deer tags. nothing extra curricullar. a friend from colorado and his boy got late bull permits, 2nd choice, with no points, for the same hunt me and one boy applied for first choice with 7 points. so much for bone-us points. i have so many sheep points that it ain't even funny. another friend, who was one of 7 folks with max bone-us points for elk, got a muzzleloader bull tag 2nd choice. the last one. this was after the azgfd guaranteed him a tag this year. he barely got that one. good hunt, and he's glad to have it, but i don't see where these points do much good. it's the luck of the draw. folks with no points get drawn over folks with max points every year. oh well, least we got some deer tags. better than nothin'. glad colorado came through earlier. it's looking like deer season is gonna be hotter and dustier than last year. good luck to all who drew. condolences to all who didn't. except uso clients or azgfd employees. hope none of ya got anything but antlered javelina. now it needs to rain. guess i'll use my 7 weeks o' vacation fishin'. hey, that ain't a bad idear. Lark.

    AZ CREDIT CARD HITS

another guy from this site sent me an email saying he thought he would be ok, that the bank should take care of it. hope so. he is one bummed out kid. oh well, if i get a rough country tag, he can tag along to help punk it out. i'll just leave the livestock home. can you believe all the activity on this site today? there must be over a dozen folks on here right now looking. then next week we'll all either be hoot owl happy about tags or gutter low cuz we didn't get nothin'. anyway, this site ain't gonna be boring for awhile. anybody know how the azgfd notifies now? will they send us an email or does a guy have to go to their site when the info is on it? later, Lark.

    AZ CREDIT CARD HITS

couse1, my boy wishes he was in the boat with you. he lost his wallet in a circle k this morning so as soon as he found out he called and cancelled his cards. then a couple hours later his pal called and said they were drawing today. so unless they drew him before he cancelled the card, he is s.o.l. this year for anything in Az. he called the azgfd to see if he could give them a new number and they said no, too late. he tried to get the card co. to reinstate his old number. no dice. he'll be using paper from now on. i've always tried to use the paper applications, more as a protest to uso being able to apply a jillion folks for $5 a head than for any other reason. this year i used plastic. but after this fiasco with my son, i think i'm gonna go back to paper. i don't know how to look up the credit card stuff to see if i got drawn anyway. hey, does anyone know how the azgfd will notify folks if they get drawn? do they send an email message if they have and e-address for ya? Lark. p.s. he got a call saying his wallet was turned in by a good samaritan and that he could pick it up anytime. so that's a good deal
