Bears, Turtles and Coues Bucks
.270 replied to hunter4life's topic in Muzzleloader hunting for Coues Deer
great story. i love to see it when folks pay attention to everything when they're hunting. there is a lotta stuff to see besides your prey. looks like you and your ol' man had fun. last year in colorado my son shot a pronghorn and i was by the guts the next day and turtle was eatin' the guts. the best peta stickers are switchblades.. remember the old I heart this and that bumper stickers that had the heart on em, like i heart new york and crap? i made a couple that had a club on em, like the club on playin' cards. one said i club baby seals and one said i club my kids. made another one that said i spade my dog. me and another guy ordered some stickers that were a pitcher of a screw from national lampoon magazine. they were made to put over the heart on the i heart bumper stickers. i put one over a guys sticker that said i heart my grandkids. my buddy fernando got one over his i heart pitbulls sticker several times. i had a blast with them things. h e l l, there are guys on this site that think if you don't use the right rifle, you're unethical. only the 7mm/08 is unethical. one guy wrote on here that not using camo was unethical. some folks think recurves and compounds should be illegal and that everyone should just use a longbow. maybe we ought just use atlatl's or whatever them things were called. crossbows are probably a little less effective than a compound, in the hands of the right guys. but they do allow a guy with bad wing to shoot an arrow. they are a different way to hunt. only advantage i see of a crossbow over a compound is that once one was sighted in, you don't need to practice a lot like you should with a bow. it's all opinions. i don't see anything wrong with allowing folks to use crossbows. even more liberally than they are now allowed. Lark.

i have just one question, will they be able to play the banjo? if they can, i might want one. Lark.

guys with their boys hunting is a wonderful thing. congratulations. Lark.

actually, the .308 was developed to work better in machine guns than the '06 did. the first sporting rifle it was in was the model 88 and model 70 winchester. the 88 is a hammerless lever action. the 70 is a bolt. the '06 was hard on barrels and the extra length didn't cycle as good. there were lotsa machine guns and semi autos in the '06 in military uses, but in the early 50's they started looking at some of the limitations of the '06 and nato standardized on the .308 and called it a 7.62 nato. don't sell the.308 short. there are a lotta dead commies that can attest to it's merits. it ain'[t a .270, but it is a fine round. Lark.

roninflag, excellent advice. the cartridge doesn't matter much if it's in a rifle that won't hold up it's end of the deal and if it belongs to a guy that ain't a marksman. just because something has a fancy name and impressive balistics doesn't mean the rig will live up to the hype. the nut that holds the trigger is the most important part of the equation. Lark.

i would bet that 75% of the rifles out there, with the guy that owns em, the ammo he uses and set up the way he has it set up, won't shoot an inch at 100 yards. no matter what the conditions. my old .270 that has had several thousand rounds through it, won't shoot an inch anymore. but i'll shoot however far i need to. and i'll hit it. you guys are putting real tough restrictions on folks with your under an inch at a 100 rule. and a 7 1/2 inch group at 500 is excellent. there ain't 1% of the shooting population can do that with a hunting rifle. never mind hunting conditions. i agree with practice, practice and more practice. i agree with really knowing your rifle. but all this unethical talk if you can't do this or that is bs. guys need to use what they want and have fun doing it. Lark.

3 inches at 200 is very good shooting. if what you say is so, then few folks should be allowed to shoot 200 yards. when you get in the field, your groups get a lot bigger. i believe in Bill Q's thoery that minute of deer is what matters, not minute of angle. Lark.

i've been shooting the 140 hornady interloks for 30 years with real good success. no need to change now. if i want to shoot 1000 yards i have guns that will do it. years ago somebody made a 165 gr .277 bullet. can't even remember who it was, but it was a real slug and it was in the days before we knew about range finders, calibrated scopes, etc and velocity was the way to long range hunting. my old standby is a stock model 70 that was made in '48 and has had the same leupold vari x III for 30 years too. i'm real comfortable out to 500 with it and have made some shots close to 700, but there was a lotta luck involved. i would still choose a .270 over the .308 any day tho, for what it's worth. the .308 is a fine round, but i like my .270. one thing about it, all this duscussion about long range .270's has me doin' some thinkin'. soon as deer and elk season is over i'm gonna look at a new project. does berger make a high BC .277? wonder where i can find me a model 70 action? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Lark.

who cares? that's a great buck no matter what it scores. good job. Lark.
-
nope. she shoots a .270. that means she is smart, sneaky and a good shot. i shouldn't o' even told you maroons about it. Lark.
-
yeah and then they will go and have a buncha cubs and just improve things. all because they were up a tree where you could properly asses the situation and not shoot somethin' that oughta keep livin'. you just ain't a sportin' kinda guy. i love hounds. Lark.

Why is this even a question? Lark

Vortex 6-20x50 vs. Barska 8-26x 50???
.270 replied to Gut Pile's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
vortex. never heard much good about barska and they sound kinda commie. and personally, unless i happen to get a good buy on a scope or i put one on a .22, i ain't ever gonna buy anything that won't go to at least 20x. i really like all that magnification and feel it makes me a lot better shot, on stationary things. and i was already like the best shot in the world. running game is a little different. but that's why i like variables. Lark. -
crap. only picher she sent me was of her wearin' a coconut bra and a grass skirt and doin' the hula. she said it was the hula. she didn't have a hoop or nothin', so i'm sorta skeptickle about it bein' an authentic hula dance. Lark.

forget about how hard something hits. just worry about where it hits. all this "knockdown" stuff doesn't mean anything. especially at a 1000 yards. nothing has much punch at that range. but they will still kill stuff. high BC bullets and a gun set up to shoot em are what you have to have to hit well at long ranges. i don't know of anyone that makes a high BC .277? if they do, you can shoot a .270 as far as anything else. it's only the thickness of toilet paper less than a .284 (7mm) and it's larger than a 6.5mm and they shoot them all the time in long range matches. actually, the .270 is true 7mm diameter. what you call a 7mm is actually a little bigger than 7mm because of the way the europeans measure the bore off the lands instead of the grooves. and it is also against the rules to use a .270 in long range matches because it ain't fair. with the completely flat trajectory and the ability to shoot one hole, 10 shot groups, at 1000 meters and the fact that that they are impervious to weather and gravity and the bullets actually go faster the farther they fly, it just ain't much of a challenge. guys would be there for a month waiting for somebody to miss. Lark.

what is wrong with using a crossbow? ain't they been usin' em since the dark ages? (the real dark ages, not the carter, clinton and obama years) i qualify for a permit to use one during archery season because of a total shoulder joint replacement. the 90% deal is sorta up to the dr. you don't have to be 90% disabled in an arm, but you have to be 90% in what it takes to shoot a bow. the only restriction the dr put on my shoulder was things that pulled on it, like a bow. been thinking real serious about getting one and trying it during archery seasons. i have a good friend who was born missing a hand and he has been using one for many years, with great success. they make some really slick ones these days. but man they are 'spensive. i still don't understand the big deal against using them if you're disabled or during firearm season. don't know if i agree with the night hunting deal either. guess it's ok in the context they say, but i sure hope they don't start allowing open night hunting for varmints. talk about something that will screw up a lotta things. Lark.

times must be tough. longears is sellin' his mama's combat boots. Lark.

i would switch. to a .270. Lark.

i speak the truth. the .308 ain't nothin' but the red headed step kid of an argentine mauser. only good thing about it is they necked it down and made the .243. and then it led to the most useless thing on earth, right next to boar tits, the 7mm/08. oh yeah, ron white. Lark.
