    243 Bullets

a 100 gr 243 bullet is a wonderful thing. if it's a factory load the remington corelokt are hard to beat and don't cost a lot. if it's a reload i'd suggest 100 gr hornady btsp innerlocks. inexpensive and they work real well. i have an old model 600 rem in 243 that my boys killed more deer with than i can recall. it's gets used by somebody every year now. Who Drew The Tag of a Lifetime?

i'm glad to hear that somebody with a buncha years of applying got a sheep tag. make the most of it ebb. hunt hard and shoot a big one. they give you a month to hunt so you can. i am absolutely sick of hearing about folks with just a few years of applying getting a tag. a friend of my son's has already shot a desert and a rocky and i've been applying since before he was born. the past 4 years i've ran into guys scouting for sheep in the unit i always apply for. i've been applying for longer than all of them combined. i'm thinking bonus points don't really matter when it comes to sheep and pronghorn. the number folks with a lot of points have stacked up to where everyone has a bunch of points. my uncle finally got a pronghorn tag this year. after 50 years of applying. he's an old man on oxygen 24-7. Crawdad/Crayfish recipe

here's a little tip that will help anyone who likes crawdads. look at the tip of the tail. they have i think 5 "feathers" on the end of their tail. grip the middle feather and pull it straight out. the "mud" vein comes out with it, 99% of the time. that way you don't have to do the purge deal and all that. try it, it works. it even works on lobsters. we eat em by the thousands. favorite way is to pull the mud vein, boil em up until done, nice and red, in a bucket or tub or whatever, peel the tails, then either dip em in butter and chow on em that way or you can make jambalaya, which we are havin' by the way tomorrow night for dinner. (my wife found crawdad tails at walmart) or you can make tacos or burros, or a crawdad omelette, or a po'boy or whatever. Lark.

    Jaguarundi in AZ

i see bryan still has his RV sense o' humor. that's purty funny. i bet the coati mundi didn't care for it. amanda, how many unreliable people have said they have seen em? Lark.
  14. heck no, there are some things that even i won't do. i've peed on a 'lectric fence, been stun gunned jut for kicks, stuck a porkypine quill in my finger to see how hard it is to pull it out, caught a bobcat that was shot out of a tree so the hounds wouldn't tear it up, ate haggis, but fox piss gum is one deal i won't even try. another thing to do is don't eat any beans. had that mess up a stalk or 2. i have next to no experience with hunting in stands. i like to be on the ground and go to the game. Lark.

    baby elk

good for you. them little babies need all the help they can get. especially this year. was it a bull or a heifer? i've cut two of them out of fences over the years. had one of em's mama get after me pretty good once while i was trying to untangle her baby, but i got it out and they trotted off. when she got to the trees she stopped and looked back, sorta like she was saying thanks. Lark.

    Elk In the Pines

go in there after em. if they're in the rut, especially with a bow, that's where you want em. get right in the middle of the herd where all the action is. if things get hot enough, a good one might run right by you chasing a cow or another bull. there ain't a whole lot that is more exciting. get in there and become a member of the herd. really. you can do it. if you're rifle hunting, especially if you have some snow, you can track em up an shoot em too. especially in the later seasons when the bigger bulls have left the the big herds. if you know what to look at, you can tell a bull's bed from a cow's, real easy. elk live in the thick stuff most of the time. you can hunt elk all day long, from first light until dusk. don't let the middle part of the day get away from you. Lark.

suggested retail on the ruger site is 799. should be able to get one for a little less. at least after the new wears off. they might be a little higher to start because of demand. i'm gonna hafta see if i can fine one to look at. i still think i want a blue colt. just have to see what i can find. ain't there a gun show next weekend? Lark.
  21. apache, no my leica does not have the angle deal in it. i put an angle indicator on my rifle and do it that way. i'm still learning this long range stuff, but have made some pretty long shots on game. figuring the angle can be real tricky. Lark.

    Odd behavior

lots of extinct deer had tusks. some had really big ones. the irish elk had tusks several inches long. i've been told and read many times that the elk ivory is a remnant tooth that used to be a tusk. the photos i saw of the one they dug up, it had fairly large tusks. i was wrong about the irish elk being prehistoric. said they died out about 11,000 years ago. i think bill quimby killed the last one. and cows eat fish in a lot of places. but that one island, there ain't any feed part of the year and they feed em some kinda big ol fish. kinda gross to watch. i'd hate had to have a t-bone offa one. surf and turf in the same piece o' meat. Lark.

    Odd behavior

ain't an elk ivory the remnanat of a tusk? i saw photos of a prehistoric elk skeleton being dug up once and it had tusks. it was in the U.S. too. seems like the irish elk had big tusks too. and they ain't even prehistoric. there is an island around greece somewhere that they have a buncha cattle on and they feed them fish. man, i bet the milk tastes bad. i think most animals will eat about anything if they get the opportunity. i seen a gut eatin' turtle last hear in colorado. Lark.
  25. i don't. might taste like sody water. why don't ya taste some and tell us? i kinda think it might not be too good or there would be all kindsa stuff flavored with it. Lark.
