i think what we think of as hunting here in north America is completely different than what the PH's do chasing hippos, cape buffalo, lions and elephants. i guess the crocs could be chunked in there too. these things can and do kill folks on a regular basis. and people don't have to be hunting them, to have them hunt back. i've had a couple mt lions chase me around a bit, got in a fistfight with a bear while i was fishing once, got swatted by a bobcat that was getting squarshed by a rock i was standing on, had a couple javelinas chase me, been kicked by a wounded buck. but a .22 would put any of these animals down in fine fashion. i've had a pretty dangerous and exciting life compared to most and i've never really been afraid of an animal doing any more than leaving a few scars. those PH's need someone to help pack their nuts. they wouldn't even think of using a lot of rifles that are completely fine for here. they have to be able to have complete confidence that their rifle will fire every time they pull the trigger. there is a book called karamojo about a named w.d.m. bell that was an ivory hunter. he hunted elephants with a 7x57 mauser. he liked having 5 rounds instead of 2 and knew what he was doing. i read once where he said if he were young again and going to hunt ivory he would used a .308. he would use a .308 over an '06 because the cartridge is a hair shorter and you can cock and fire it a hair faster and sometimes that hair kept you alive. the claw extractor was developed for men to shoot each other and have confidence that that their rifle would always fire and repeat. it is a survival mechanism. that's why PH's use rifle with a positive extracting system. a lot of sporting rifles have gone away from it because they don't have to be involved in life or death situations and they are a heck of a lot cheaper to make. for whatever reason a lot of folks cuss the claw extractor, i would guess it's more of a ford chevy deal, but there is a reason that it is still around. i like mausers. and winchesters. and remingtons and other inferior actions. i like em all. but i do know why some guns are different. minute of deer accuracy. now that is a saying worth remembering there Bill. i read once that the dangerous game hunters in africa will only carry 3 types of rifles, a mauser, a pre64 model 70 or a high grade double rifle. because they alway feed and fire and they never leave a spent case in the barrel. great story. looks to be a good lion. and that there rifle be a model 70 super grade, on top of being your grandad's. don't ever let it get away from you. what an outstanding rifle in the best caliber ever. the black inlay is probably ebony tho, not ivory. that's what the black keys on a pie-anny are traditionaly made of. there is nothing "wrong" with a mauser. especially a 98 or mark x. a lot of the 98's are converted military actions and if they still have the military trigger, you'll want to change it. they are extremely well made and strong. for years, weatherby, browning, sako, colt, etc., used mauser actions in their rifles. personally, for hunting rifles, i like the claw extractor. some folks believe the extractor notch in the barrel makes them less accurate, but i don't see how that can really be. it's easier to use a 700 or something, but there ain't anything wrong with mausers. 700's have some glaring problems too. the new trigger is an improvement. but that skinny little extractor can be a sumb!ch with a suspect reload sometimes. mausers have a quick lock time and can be made to be even quicker with some work. if you chose to start a rifle with a mauser action, you can have excellent results. expect and plan on horrible cold weather. may not happen, but it dang sure can. it's gonna be cold no matter what. the big herds can start moving down, just because. they are pretty good at predicting the weather. if you get some snow, the tracks show up better. a great thing about unit 1 is that there are 2 seasons. friday, saturday and sunday. most folks have either killed one or go home after sunday and about tuesday the elk start calming down and it's like a whole new season with about 25% of the hunters. it's one unit that is just as good, or maybe even better, on the last day as it is on the first. so who is the guy that writ the coyote to english dictionary anyway? how do ya know what they're sayin'? this is plum funny. i just yip a little to let em know where i am. sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. but if there is one in the area, it seems to get em headed my way and when i crank up the ol' circe, it seems to work better. i have had it bring em right in too, quite few times. once i took my .300 callin' and howled for about 5 ot 10 seconds, real early, and had dogs flying in from all directions. i shot 4 times and got 4 dogs. surprised the heck out of em. none of em wear together, but they ended up in the same place. seems to me if i hack on my elk call, i call in more dogs. and it seems like they keep coming harder and aren't as wary. especially if more than on answers. they try to beat the other guy there and don't pay a much attention. Lark.

about the only thing that'll move elk much is snow and their own opinion. usually. last year where we were there was a real big buncha elk that went low without any snow to speak of. they knew it was coming. but there were a buncha bulls that stayed real high, even after it put down about 18 inches. if it gets 50 below for a few days they might wander off the peaks, but that kinda cold usually takes a storm anyway. as long as they can get to enough feed to keep em going, they like it high. that's why you see the quakie bark all gnawed off in some places. they're trying to hang out in the high country a little longer. but sometimes they just know it's a comin' and get off the mountain. so baiscally, it's sorta like old people diapers. depends. i usually always howl before i call. i don't know anything about different coyote sounds, i just hack on a diaphram elk call real loud and make it sound like a coyote. i do that for maybe 15 seconds or so and then start calling. works very well early in the morning. once while we were quail hunting i was up knockin' around camp before the sun was up and i started hackin' on my call (i use it for a quail call too) to wake everbody up and some dogs started yelping real close. i was barefoot and had to stumble to the truck to get my 223 and hacked again and 2 of em came outta the greasewood a hunnerd or so yards away. got em both while i was barefoot and everbody else was trying to figger out what was goin' on. i really like to howl. when ya get it back, weigh it, and that's how much you get. the quality of the butcher has a lot to do with it. and also, its amazing how much a carcass compacts when you cut it up and package it. main thing to worry about is how good o' job the butcher does. with a good butcher, you're gonna get all the edible meat there was on the carcass. take out most o' the bones and such, and the weight shrinks considerably. again, take it to a good butcher. with a clean shop. we used to alway try o add about 10% beef fat to the burger, but anymore prefer it with no fat. Lark.

i was just tryin' to make fun o' 7mm/08's, not cops. Lark.

rednecks? that ain't right. we all have teeth, nobody's folks are related and nobody has any tatoos. the rifle is an old model 94. it was made in 1895, the first year of the .30/30. Skeeter's brother, Earl, traded some ol' trapper out of it in the 30's and gave it to Skeeter. the barrel and magazine have been sawed off to 12 inches. only holds 3 in the tube. the forepiece and the butt have been shortened way up too. the hammer is filed way down. it's pretty unique. real handy to pack on a horse. scabbard ain't much bigger than a holster. winchester made a trapper model of the 92 and the 94. some of them had 12, 14 and 16 inch barrels. this isn't one of those. this is a total custom job. with a hacksaw, file and chisel. it has an octogan barrel too. cool old rifle. hard to shoot straight, but Skeeter was deadly with it. he only had 3 guns. that one, a colt woodsman .22 auto pistol and an old model '01 winchester .22 single shot his dad bought him when he was a kid. they're all 3 still around. the rug from the bear is in the old pima museum. along with the same photo. the ford dealer in safford, hal shorbe, was delivering a new pickup to the ranch and went with them to check the trap and he shot the bear and had a rug made and gave it to skeeter. it was a cattle killer. there is another photo taken at the same time where Georgetta and Leroy were trying to plug their noses because of the stink from the dead cow and it looks like they are both pickin' their noses. i wish they'da took more photo's of dead animals. he was a predator getter deluxe. wolves, bears, lions, coyotes, bobcats. Lark.

an early rifle isn't a guarantee of a 400 bull. how many legitimate 400 bulls get killed every year? now, how many were with auction or raffle tags or on a reservation with a good herd? like they said, forget the score and have some fun. Az in the fall is a great place to be. yeller trees, howlin' elk, nice weather. and if you have a rifle elk tag, it's a heavenly experience. for sure shoot the biggest one you can find. good luck, but if they get hung up on "score" it will diminish the experience. Lark.
