Optics warranties. Worth it or not?

The claims of failing optics or any item, are purely speculative and tend to follow confirmation bias. Only Vortex knows their true failure rate. Likewise Swarovski and Remington,..... the list continues. as to Fraud, here is where I pulled it. http://www.nemeng.com/leica/025e.shtml Leica Warranty - transferrable? ScopeThe warranty you get on new items is solely between the person who bought the item and the manufacturer only - it is limited to the initial purchaser and vendor only and is not attached to the item itself. So if you buy an second hand item still under warranty with Leica, the warranty itself will not transfer to the new owner. This is the reason why camera stores offer their own 3-6 month warranties on used equipment. Strictly speaking, the warranty for Leica equipment here is between Leica and the person who bought the item from an authorised Leica Dealer, who in turn had sourced the item through an authorised Leica Distributor. Break the chain at any point and the warranty goes. However it is apparent that Leica will - at their discretion - make exceptions, especially for R8/9 users. But it is up to them. Work-arounds? Passport under another nameYou've bought a second-hand Leica still under Passport warranty. After using it for a short while something breaks. Can you still send it in to be repaired under warranty? A few years back an "experienced Leica user" noted the following: The standard practice among friends is, if the item needs passport warranty work, you simply send it to Leica under the original owners name. The address is immaterial as people do move and sometimes need service when on an assignment... It works. Same for Hasselblad. Yes, well… this is fraud. When the camera was sold to you the "warranty-chain" broke and it became just another second-hand camera. You might be able to get away with sending it in under the original owner's name to claim warranty protection, but you only have to be caught once to earn yourself an indelible black mark. You have been warned. Cards not yet filled inIf however the warranty card has not yet been filled in, then practically you have no problems. In this particular case your warranty will most likely be valid. Just fill in the card under your name and address and mail it off to Leica. (This of course assumes the warranty covers an item only a few months old and some "new-in-box" 30 year old collectors relic!) Hold back on immediately filling in your Warranty cardsYou've just taken deliver of a brand new camera and realise you have to fill in the warranty cards and mail them off to obtain warranty protection. Thing is, don't do it straight away. Always wait until you've shot a couple of rolls and have confirmed everything works okay before filling in the warranty card. Why? Because if there is something wrong, you can return the camera + packaging + warranty cards to your dealer and there will be less trouble getting the camera swapped for new one. Otherwise the dealer will have to send your faulty camera off for service repairs and then wait the weeks (or months) required for the problems to be fixed. Keep in mind any camera swap is done completely at the dealer's discretion. You cannot demand they do it! Time limits still apply!Another thing to keep in mind is to not put off filling in the cards indefinitely. In May 2004 Anthony Oresteen noted the following warning: I called Leica USA about a month ago. They informed me that you only get Passport warranty in the US if you register the item within 30 days of purchase from an authorized Leica dealer. If you fail to register the item within 30 days, then you only get the normal Leica warranty (no Passport) On another note, someone driving 5 miles under the speed limit can be sited for either excessive speed or impeding the flow of traffic. No relevance to this thread whatsoever.

Optics warranties. Worth it or not?

I had more problems with my Nightforce stuff then I have had with Vortex. Not just me but I have had to send stuff back for customers. The problem dealing with them is it is never their fault. The times I have had problems, it was due to things being out of spec. Nightforce never has made something with problems, just ask them. I like their stuff, but hate dealing with them. All brands of anything will have problems, how they deal with the problems is what Im interested in.

Optics warranties. Worth it or not?

I don't only look at price or warranty. I want quality but nobody make a perfect anything. There are flaws that show up with use. I want products where the company that made them stands behind them. I own several leica products and love them. Their warranty isn't as big a factor because they are more of a botique producer. Smaller numbers. I have had things break not under warranty and gladly paid to get them fixed. The beauty of vortex's warranty in my opinion, is I can have my children use my optics and not be on edge, worried that they might break them. I loan my viper 15s to lots of people when they take their kids out. When the kids glass they become a hunter not just a shooter. I wouldn't loan out my non warranty stuff. Many of those people that have borrowed them, have since bought optics for their kids.

I didn't ask for free one. I called them to tell them I didn't want them to even send them back. The conversation about vortex taking market share followed.

Optics warranties. Worth it or not?

ThomC said price is the same on everything. Compared ball bearings. It can be true but it also is false. Materials used can look the same but hardness and purity and tolerances all effect the price and quality. My DDLES 9mm glock mag Ar15 was supposed to be milled out of 7075, well when I noticed galling where the bcg struck the mag catch I spoke with them. No answer. Fast forward a couple months. They closed. New owners. They threw away lots of partially milled lowers that the prior owner used 6061 to save $ on materials and machine time. Quality costs more money.

That is their problem, Their reputation is in the crapper. There are some very nice and well made Bushnell scopes, but everyone associates them with their Banner line. I don't care who makes it, but a 50-100 dollar scope is gonna fail. The one I had was 395, and should have be able to compete with other 300-400 dollar scopes. Look at their Elite line, read the reviews.

    7mm Rem Mag Memorial Build

Sig just came out with a line of optics. The Whiskey5 is pretty interesting to me as a hunting scope. The 3-15x44 and 3-15x50s are ones I really like. From what I hear, they are made at the same plant in Japan that Vortex uses. I think they run between 1100 to 1400. http://www.sigoptics.com/model/whiskey5-3-15x44-mm/ The Tango6 is in their tactical line. 3-18x44 I think between 1500-1700 from what I have seen. I like them. They have a great feel and they are easy to adjust without adding a lever. I have added levers to some of my Vortex. Just a thought. Merchant Firearms stocks them. good luck, great build btw.

    Scope help please

Look at the weight and size of the objective. The bigger scopes tend to be heavy and need taller rings. Building up a cheek rest might be necessary too. as to the zoom in, 6.5 can be too much. 3 or 4 times gives a huge FOV

    Scope help please

How much scope time does she have? More magnification isnt always better, the 6.5x on close or moving stuff can be hard to locate your target. the 4-16 or some scopes are now 6 times, 3-18 are really good hunting magnification levels. When I have my kids on the gun, I zoom it all the way out, have them find the target then zoom it closer for them at first. then they figure it out. but I always carry my gun on its lowest setting, until I set up. I have the Viper PST 4-16 and the 6-24 both FFP. great scopes. I also have a Viper HS 6-24 FFP and Viper 4-16 on other rifles. Good optics. Great service. Great price point.

  17. This year I decided to process my own deer and anything else I, or my family shoot. My 16yo daughter shot her first deer and I took a big bodied small racked forkie, to add to the 40 lbs of meat I got off of her deer, and it was a good cull buck. I worked at Smitty's at the meat counter when I was in college (24 years ago) and know a thing or two still. I bought a grinder, a sausage stuffer and other odds and ends to get it going. I have a small 6x8 walk-in cooler in my shop, so Im pretty well set up. I put the meat in ice with salt and let it drain, until the water ran clear. Then I put it on the rack to dry. Trimmed it up. Cut and tied roasts, cut steaks out of the loin and straps. The rest into stew meat and sausage. I found a sausage recipe I thought looked interesting. It called for bacon trimmings and I added cleaned and frozen green chile. Turned out pretty dang good. Now I need to get drawn for elk to really test my skills.

    Bipods

I have used Harris for most of my life. I bought a rifle that had an Atlas on it, and I love it. I recently bought a Smith Enterprises Lightweight QD MIL STD 1913 Bipod just to try it out. It is beefy. The Harris' only weakness has been lack of panning. Now that isnt a problem, as long as you drop another 80 bucks. That being said, I avoid all cheap knock off brands. I have seen to many of them break.
