Welcome to the group, Comanchero, and please keep shooting them coyotes!

Coues deer are so amazing in so many ways, highs and lows that can only be explained by those in the pursuit. It wasn't the biggest buck on the mountain today, but this buck was the most dominant. I received the rut experience I was after, all under 400 yards. This guy beat the tar out of a 3x3 that was reasonably larger. I've yet to see and shoot a 4x2. With the weather rolling in, I couldn't help but shoot this buck on the stalk to more distant, far away action, and I couldn't be happier with December 2021'

A coues with my kid, and a puppy

Way to get the family involved on a Christmas buck, congrats! -
Congratulations Zack, and that's no carp! Nice buck.

Lots of javelina and does today, both coues and mule deer, one doe had a little buck following her for 5 minutes and they went their separate ways. Rut is non-existent at the moment, I'm looking forward to next week.

16 does within 600 yards this evening, not a spike! Quick snaps with the 10xs.

Depending on where you hunt, you may have made a very good decision! Congratulations on a nice buck! I will be washed out of the hunting grounds I know best before my coveted part of the hunt even begins.

Excellent! Looks like you had all day to pack out and celebrate!

I would definitely have shot him bedded if I wanted the hunt to end. Given I've applied for this hunt for 13 years and this my first time with the tag, I definitely did not want it to end on day 2 of a 21 day hunt. I'm also looking for something a little more like this..

Found him at noon, I didn't think he was alone and the setup was solid so I gambled waiting him out at 500 yards for a few hours. At 3:30 on the dot, his clone gets out of bed just above him, impossible to have been seen. The pressure and frustration of having to glass these little bedded coues bucks is one-of-a-kind. Every day I was on bedded deer - they got up at 3:30. One of the mulies stretched at 2 and laid right back down until 3:30 also.

To the December rifle tag knowledgeable, what behavior have you experienced throughout the 3 weeks and what do you think explains it? Even if the rut isn't kicking off, it has always seemed like mid-December was a period of increasing day activity for deer. Even last week after the .5" rain, everyone was bedded down by 9am and it felt like an October hunt searching for bedded bucks!

Congratulations on an incredible and beautiful ram! Most tag holders don't get both, well done!

Sold, thx

I have projectiles I could give you but that probably doesn't help..

You can also rent spring compressors from AutoZone for free. Definitely not a tough job and a YouTube video or two should make it a piece of cake.

"Bad" weather just means switching tactics sometimes. The bucks are still there. It may not be the hunt you had in mind but maybe take another approach!

If only it stays one tag holder in a huge geographic area. We will see what happens in the coming years. This is just the beginning I fear, and I hope I'm wrong.

- The deer and elk really needed another month of the year to be pressured. - The odds for a sheep tag are better than these. - I'm in.

Great thread and best of luck to the Mrs.

In between (half) sizes with merino wool hunting socks, I sized up and upgraded to a new pair of Crispis. I wore them comfortably for a full day of yard work to break them in and put 8 rough miles on them this past weekend. The steep inclines especially caused some uncomfortable heel lift, almost to the point of blistering. I did some reading and it appears there are few options - continue break-in, lacing techniques (loosen toe box), purchasing insoles, fill with water and wear them as they dry, etc. I'm curious what CWT wisdom has to offer, please?

I appreciate the additional responses and another thank you to Chef for the sock liner suggestion. I gave an extra pair I just bought to a friend in camp and it changed the game for his boot fit. I started the surgeon knot at the ankle this weekend and with the liners and 12 miles, things improved greatly. I'm not sure I'm 100% out of the woods but the loosened toe box at least felt like the most help so far. That locking knot above it will get a try too.

It wouldn't surprise me if people cash in BPs on rifle cow hunts for the next couple years. Good luck finding your goat, OP.
