    Gear Deals

I frequent another forum that has a thread dedicated to sharing gear deals. As not very many things come cheap these days, maybe we can help save each other save some money by sharing everyday bargain websites and worthy individual deals from other retailers as we come across them. Most of us know about: http://www.camofire.com offering daily deals http://www.cabelas.com bargain cave etc. What are some others you visit regularly? I have been preparing for waterfowl season and today I found Cabelas is selling Kent Fasteel cheaper than any competitor, on sale, by the case, with free shipping on orders over $99. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Kent-Fasteel174-Precision-Steel-Shot-Shells-Per-Case/740364.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dkent%2Bfasteel%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=kent+fasteel&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

    Green Chili Javelina

I'll add one more tip after doing this with my '20 javelina - To the same effect that it needs to be submerged in the green chili sauce, be sure not to cram all of the meat into the catering pan (or smaller baking dish in my case). You'll want space between the cuts of meat to get it to tenderize right.

  11. That is my latest question after reading the recent favorite elk bullet thread. After shooting a 100 and 200 pound animal this year with a popular bullet that is relatively new to the market, I was pleased to see both drop in their tracks. I wasn't pleased to find lead fragments throughout the front shoulder and top of the straps while processing in areas a good distance away from the bullet channels. There is no shortage of studies supporting this as a reasonable concern for someone feeding their (especially young) family with the meat and it makes a compelling case for trying another bullet that holds together better or even going lead-free. Eating archery meat became even more satisfying after this last year. I'm curious what you say, CWT?

To Fragment, or not to Fragment..

Haha, my mind was set on it being lead sinkers 😂 Are all dentists admitted liars who share their irrelevant expertise?

To Fragment, or not to Fragment..

I may be wrong but I would never lie. I had 2 dentists make the theory in my late teens and early 20s when asking if I did anything different with my right molars than my left. Both said fishing stinkers made sense.

To Fragment, or not to Fragment..

I also didn't start this thread to cause any problems. It is beyond commendable to kill as quickly and efficiently as possible, but if that means unknowingly putting lead on the table and not just through the animal's vitals, I wanted to see what people had to say. Great discussion so far.

To Fragment, or not to Fragment..

Was waiting for your replies.. When I get x-rays at the dentist, I can see the white blotches on the right side of my molars where I've also clamped down split shots through adolescence. I don't need more lead to test my exposure limits. I have found quite a bit but seldom with the accubonds I was previously shooting and never more than this year shooting the new bullets.

To Fragment, or not to Fragment..

I do a fair amount of work with eagles and I've seen lead-poisoned birds first hand, it sucks. In addition to not wanting to inject any more harm into my kids that already exists in this crazy world, introducing load poisoning to scavengers is something that has bothered me for some time at varying levels, but knowing especially that I shoot a lot of coyotes in eagle territory. I always try to hide their carcasses in inconspicuous places although it probably doesn't help much once they are dragged out. It's not a feeling I wanted to confirm after just settling in on an amazing load in a new rifle but quality meat is one of most important aspects to my hunting. As someone who already reloads, I'll enjoy pursuing my existing accuracy with lead-free bullets anyway, so it is a road I have been prepared to go down and something I will do this off-season. I'll share my results along the way and still look forward to input on the thread.

Favorite Elk Bullet? Average shot distance in AZ?

I have seen the accubond perform extremely well several times on elk and retain almost all of their weight and form. Although no elk yet, I've noticed in 3 smaller animals this past year that the ELD-X leave behind a lot of fragments. FWIW - I have a rifle that didn't like the accubonds and went to the ELD-X, I'm going to try to go back to Noslers.

In's and Out's of filing for Short Term Disability

You pay into STD to receive it, it's like insurance for broken body parts, pregnancies, etc.. Things that don't last 12 weeks or more, long-term disability kicks in after that. Most companies have an automatic LTD plan. All companies have varying policies. As mentioned above, most require you draining all of your sick time first if vacation PTO is in a different bucket, or all PTO if not. Other companies allow you to only to withdrawal after a waiting period. My company offers 2 premiums for two different waiting periods, 14 and 28 days. Before kids, I had 12 weeks of sick time acquired and was able to stop paying into STD all together while still keeping pay secured. PRDATR, Call your HR rep and they should get you squared away. I'd think they want you taken care of so you can get back to a full recovery, and work. Good luck healing.

What do you carry with your 15x's?

Figured I'd update my post. I ended up with going with matching 10x's and have no regrets. I used them just as much if not more than my 15x's and contrary to my concern, each have their place considering field of view. Although, having documented a hunt of a lifetime this past fall, I now want a spotter after digiscoping with a friend's Swaro 65. I'm going to wait a year or two to see if the want waivers but I keep finding myself going back to the pictures the last couple months and each brings me right back to the moment. It's not as big of an issue for scouting, but carrying 10x's, 15x's, and spotter together several days this year makes one definitely see the appeal for 12x's & spotter on hunting days.
  21. After upgrading to some top tier 15x's, it took two trips to make looking through my 10x's unenjoyable, and I forgot the 10's on my first trip. A potential upgrade may be coming my way in matching 8x or 10x binoculars to go along with the 15x's. Wondering, what is your setup that includes 15x's, CWT?

  24. Seeking upgrade advice on my first rifle that I purchased myself at 18, a Savage 110 7mm Rem Mag that is approaching 2000 rounds. Accuracy started going downhill slowly after some sub-MOA handloads were developed a couple years ago. I scrubbed the barrel to remove all copper, checked scope and action screw torque, etc. but accuracy (still) has dropped off far from what it used to be. Now I randomly get 2-5 MOA with no consistency using either the original factory ammo or the new handloads. Now that I am pursuing more and longer range shooting, I believe I want to turn this rifle into a semi-custom based on my extremely positive history with it. Being a firm believer in the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality, I do want to keep the 7mm Rem Mag. Initial research makes it seem (at least relatively) easy to buy gauges and a barrel wrench and swap the barrel with a prefit. Benefit to this is saving money on a smith and being able to do the work again on this and my other 2 Savages in the future. My budget is negotiable but I would like to match it to what this rifle really is, a sentimental hunting bolt gun on a Savage action. Shooting MOA at 1,000 yards sounds awesome but I don't expect it without spending $$$$$ which may not be the ideal option at this time and circumstance. A few questions I could use some hep with- 1) Barrel Manufacturer: There are many to choose from, any preferences out there? I like the weight and concept of the Proof Carbon Prefits but $900 on a blind mag Savage 110 seems way out of proportion. There are several well-reviewed companies with barrels in the $250-500 that would likely fit the bill and out-perform my capabilities as a shooter. I'm open to all suggestions. 2) Barrel Contour and Twist: I already have a lightweight mountain rifle but as a hunting gun, I also want to keep this one relatively light. All my shooting lends to allowing the barrel to cool between shots but I'm not sure where to settle on contour? Having a 6.5 shooting 143 gr bullets, this 7mm will likely shoot 175 gr ELDx but would like to play with 160 gr Accubonds if possible. I believe a 1:9 will cover both but am entertaining dropping to a 1:8/1:8.44 for dedication to the 175+'s. I am also leaning towards 24" on length. 3) Muzzle Brake: Does it matter if I get a threaded prefit or is it better to let the gunsmith do the threading when installing the brake? My rifle currently has a APA Little Bastard that I will want to put on the new barrel. I assume I will need a gunsmith to true the brake even if I buy a threaded barrel? Eric at Axis Works has done my past work and I would use him again. 4) Stock: I'm all ears. It's definitely time to get rid of the cheap tupperware, but there aren't too many affordable options for stocks for this rifle, especially lighter in weight without dropping some coin. It has a top bolt release, blind mag and believe it is a stagger feed (mag box stays attached to action when stock is removed). I'm currently leaning towards a Boyds in the Classic shape. I've read of guys hollowing out the butts to save some ounces. They charge $55 for aluminum pillar bedding on the front, thoughts there? Sorry for the novel but it is tough to advise without knowing the details. If there is anything else I can provide, please let me know. Thanks for suggestions on anything above.
