  1. Please don't take offense as I have no clue about your setup, but I would look at the potential of the bow and the shooter before looking at upgrading a 4 pin sight like that. Sure looks like each pin would hover over a critter within 50 yards. Good luck to you this season.

    Grave Digger Broadheads

Just when I was about to give up looking for them, I found them cheaper than I've ever seen them. Just stocked up on my favorite broadhead. Get them while you can. http://billsarchery.net/product/grave-digger-chisel-tip-broadhead-100gr/

    6.5 LRAB

I don't know where most of you guys are seating your bullets for testing, but right in the box there was a white card that said the best accuracy was found shooting the LRAB's at the SAAMI OAL. Going from 0.010" off my lands and shooting MOA, to 0.120" off (SAAMI), my already MOA groups got steadily tighter in my stock savage 110 in 7RM while decreasing OAL. I haven't used my reloads on game yet but my brother put a factory 168gr LRAB into a bull last December and he didn't go anywhere but south.
  5. If you're 400 yards away from an occupied structure and the area is not posted as No Hunting/Trespassing, the most someone can do is tell you to leave.

    Putting Them to Bed

The buck at 197 yards above was originally spotted at 450 yards. The wind was in my favor, so I crept in. Nothing special on my boots, just slow and low. For archery hunting I may put something under my feet.

    Putting Them to Bed

One of the most effective methods to consistently have a chance at outwitting mature coues bucks - glass them up and wait for them to bed before making any moves. So you were glassing on a hunt, you put a coues buck to bed. What happened and why did he get up or bust? Was he solo, in a bachelor group, the rut? Was he completely, partially, or not at all visible in his bed? On average, how long did they stay bedded? In a place our party has a tag for this year, there are 4 bucks bedded in this photo, only one is (although completely) visible at all. They were bedded by 7:15AM on an October rifle hunt and remained bedded for an hour until they were shot at from 350 yards, sad to say the shooter missed. Solo buck that was down by 7:30AM, leaving himself mostly visible at 197 yards. The shooters in our party tagged out the day before so we didn't have a tag remaining. This buck remained in his bed for the hour I watched him. A great 4x4 we are looking to catch up with in October. I've been wanted to toss this discussion around for awhile and figured the excitement of draw results could get some knowledgeable folks talking and sharing.
  8. Thank you all for the replies! The 70gr Speer Semi Spitzer kept popping up in a bunch of my searches whenever I included the word "deer" so I was hoping someone had some Arizona experience. Midway has them available and reviews are excellent, I will likely try a box and report back. I have some factory 55gr V-Max that has performed well on coyotes out of my AR that is loaded and ready in my savage mag to shoot this weekend to verify my gun likes them. I expected to then reload them as well. Thank you for pointing out the 53gr variety, they have excellent reviews and it looks like a lot of folks are having success with them on the predator forums. As usual, thank you, Lance. Sierra does not recommend this bullet for use on game and some folks on other forums said the same which led me to look at the 65gr SGK. It's hard not to take your advice in a lot of these situations and I know you shoot those 69 SMKs out of several rifles and now have provided proof too! Just curious, was that dropping shot on the doe to the vitals? Has anyone tried the 69gr Sierra Tipped MK? Thanks!
  9. Thanks buddy, I appreciate the offer. I will definately want to look at your map. Haven't set foot in 36A or I'd of shared more. But hopefully one day after a dove shoot we can sit down, make the map, and have some poppers and a coldie. Talk to you soon!
  10. I love the first October hunts, predictable bucks if you put in the time! You both will do great!! Let me know if you need a map, good luck!!!

    Rocky Point

Get to the deepest water access you can find on the rocky/south side in between cholla point and competition hill opposite to JJs. Crush the biggest snails you can find that are stuck to the rocks and cast them out on a small bait hook with a split shot. No float needed but may be nice to have. Once you catch a small rock bass, cut him into cubes, up the rod, hook and weight size, and cast into the deepest water you can find. You should have a field day with larger rock bass and trigger fish if that's what you're after. Good luck.

    Do I need a 20yd pin ?

With my current set up, 5 yards is a bullseye using my 30 yard pin so I think we are on the same page.

    Do I need a 20yd pin ?

I may not explain this well as I don't want to write a novel but I'll give it a shot. After a significant bow upgrade late last fall (velocity went from ~250fps to ~300 fps), I moved to shoot a 5 pin slider and I tried skipping a 20 yard pin and going straight to 30. My shots using a 30 pin at 20 yards impacted 1.5" high, and all was well until I shot at a pig that was called into ~10 yards and the arrow went straight over its back. I couldn't believe it. I held my second shot at the bottom of the belly and.. dead pig. When I took a coues out of a tree stand that was standing not 6 yards from the tree, I again held that first pin at the bottom of the belly and.. dead deer. In my opinion from experience, close range and elevated shots in the 5-15 yardage are overlooked as being far easier than they really are. They have impacted much higher than I ever anticipated or read online. Based on what happened in January, I was just extensively going through what I wanted to do with my pins at the range in the last few weeks and here is my solution (I anticipate many other's bows and hunting style/needs do not compare) - I set my second pin at 30 yards, and took shots at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 yards. Using the 30 yard pin, the highest point of impact on any target was at 15 yards. I went back to 15 yards and set it as my first pin. I found for whatever reason, the 15 yard mark is the top of my arrow's flight curve. Pins are now: 1 - 15 yards 2 - 30 yards 3 - 40 yards 4 - 50 yards 5 - 60 + slider After plenty of practice, I'm 100% certain and confident that none of my close range shots will ever contact the target higher than that first pin of 15 yards. I use the 30 pin as my goto, and can instantly gauge the worst case scenario if the target is at 15 yards.

    New Reloader Questions

I was just back on this thread and going to say how much of a help Lance has already been, and boom there he is. Thanks again for all the input. I am going to experiment with another powder or 2 as well as test the RL22 load out a couple hundred yards and I'll report back.
  23. First time reloader here that is open and eager to learn. I've worked up some decent loads for my factory savage 110 7mm using 63.0gr RL22 pushing 168gr LRABs. At 63.5gr, the groups were still good but I started seeing an outlier/group. For this load using RL22, I believe I'm set at 63.0gr. Seating depth test with the 168 LRAB contacted the lands at 3.43" and internal mag accepted 3.43" without issue, albeit not by much. I am going to play with the seating depth a bit more, but here is where I'm at @ 100 yards. 3.42" OAL (.010" jump) 3.40" OAL (.030" jump) How would you go about testing the seating depth from here? Or would you seat at 3.41" OAL and call it good? Am I measuring group size correctly? I'd be happy if I had to call it on load development, and start testing ballistics and shooting to get ready for Wyoming antelope this fall. However, to the knowledgeable audience here, would you be satisfied with where I'm at? Has RL22 been a dependable powder for you? Reason I ask, I have been doing some reading on RL22 before committing and buying in bulk but a lot of guys on the popular long range forums talked about temperature sensitivity and lot to lot variation that is unacceptable for these guys to use it as a goto powder. I mean, I was reading about guys talking about temp issues when shooting at >80-90 F. I'm hoping to develop a single load for all game in all seasons. You're all aware of the broad temp ranges in AZ from early October desert hunts to the late December mountain hunts. If I still wanted to experiment with another powder or two, what would you try next? You'll noticed I haven't referred to velocities yet- That's because I don't know how much velocity matters to my situation in relation to accuracy but I'd love to hear your take. I'm shooting a factory rifle exclusively for hunting purposes, with a BDC reticle, that I don't plan on shooting > 600 yards on game, if ever. In the past, I've used a 200 yard zero and each ballistic dot represents a tested and correlating yardage. I.e. first dot below zero played 290 yards, second played 395, third 510, etc. I have proven to myself I'm confident in this method. Lastly, the LRAB's are said to perform similar to the well-reputed accubond, but at longer ranges with lower velocities. I don't think my 7mm shouldn't have any issues with the 168gr LRAB at 600 yards on game. Thanks for reading and any discussion.
