What is this option on my trail cam?

In my experience with other electronics, selecting the format option to anything other than "No" means re-formatting the storage device (i.e. SD Card) to that format setting while erasing all existing content. Most new devices will automatically generate whatever folder structure they need when taking the first picture, as long as it isn't oddly formatted, which is why you can overwrite it in the event it is oddly formatted and not taking pictures properly.

    Bartlett crappie?

This weekend at Alamo with an older friend of mine who doesn't appreciate sunrises as much as I do: 3/14 On the water by 8:30am, crappie in the boat at 8:32am, 10" female released back for her first successful spawn attempt. Caught 4' down in 23 fow, trolling 1.0 mph. Fished hard for 5 hours totaling 5 fish. 3/15 On the water by 8:00am. Several immediate bites, missed 2 in 10 minutes, 1 hit hard as I felt it pull out of her mouth and 1 wanted to take it slow and I couldn't get it to commit. Nailed the 3rd offer though and boated a nice crappie after about 15 minutes on the water. Proceeded to catch 10 keeper crappie spread out over the course of 4 hours. I think one fell below for the photo or it could be in Tom's hand. The bite was at its best right before we left at 12-noon. We did hit 2 schools of feeding crappie which was nice as it hasn't happen in a while. We landed 2 fish out of one school with a third pole buried while we were working the others. Then later we landed 1 fish with 1 fish LDR, and again a third pole buried we just couldn't get to. The pattern? There was no pattern, except running your bait shallow (6 feet was too deep). We covered every area in 17-25 fow and caught fish in every area we covered. Chartreuse was the ticket as for color. Caught a few on bare roadrunners, one on JDG, one on pink/chart, but most on the usual BBC. Total of 15 fish in 9 hours, 2 male 13 female. Nothing over 2 pounds but a couple that pushed that number. Not the best weekend in catch rates but a great time on the water. *This post was originally written for another site with a dedicated audience so feel free to ask me to elaborate on anything.

Bet that was a great morning! Thanks for sharing the photo.

How did you get into hunting and the outdoors?

Mom's side of the family have never fished or hunted. They think I'm nuts and don't where I came from, but love me nonetheless. Dad's side are all huge fisherman. I spent lots of time with them in Washington state catching salmon with my uncle that lived on the Puget Sound, going crabbing with clams as bait that we dug up ourselves, fishing my other uncle's private ponds, and much more. His oldest brother hunted a bit but my dad never had the urge to kill anything with lungs, so hunting wasn't passed down to me in any way. Coincidentally we had a reunion with them all yesterday, sharing some of the same stories I'm mentioning here. It had been 15 years since we last met and of all the stories we told, those related to fishing made us laugh and look back the most. It's really amazing, and a great time to reflect on the topic. Fishing has always been my dad and I's favorite thing to do together. Growing up and native to Arizona, we had many family weekends on the boat at Saguaro and eventually, Roosevelt. At 2 years old my dad says I couldn't shut up about fishing. Somewhere in the 4-5 year old range he would wake up and find me standing on the back of our beached Four Winns wearing the same neon colored life jacket I fell asleep in the night before, catching dink bluegill after dink bluegill on nightcrawlers cut up evenly with mom's scissors that would always go missing from her arts and crafts bin. People would probably throw the book at him today but that life jacket was my ticket to fishing unsupervised in the mornings (friends and family were camped everywhere around me). He said I would wear that life jacket for 72 hours straight some weekends. Thinking back to George Strait's "The Best Day" - that trip for me was after I turned 10 in the spring of '97, he finally took me to the Black River I had heard so much about. Instead of doing his "Guy's only trip," he took just me. It felt just like the first verse of that song. Except we caught hundreds! Goosebumps! Just because he didn't like stopping them from breathing, doesn't mean he wasn't an absolute NUT for wildlife viewing. He was shouting yesterday at our gathering about that trip and how while he was pointing out a great heard of elk off the side of a primitive road on the San Carlos, when I said "hey dad, how about this one" where in the other direction I pointed out a massive bull that couldn't fit between the same two trees that our Chevy Tahoe could, true story! As for hunting, I had tons of BB guns and 2 vacant lots on each side of our house. I was a fine marksman in my early years and I like to leave it at that. This was one of those times I could have used a hunting role model. Around 14, I had a buddy who's grandfather enjoyed taking him, and luckily me, clay pigeon shooting. I quickly learned the responsibly of handling real firearms and enjoyed dove and quail season as much as possible. This continues to this day but now it's more about ducks along with my black lab and best friend, Drake. Other than those things that got me started, I spent almost everyday after high school fishing bass on the river for largemouth, traveling many weekends to Roosevelt continuing my infatuation with crappie, and I started bow hunting deer at 19 when I decided I wanted to go all out as an outdoorsman. Everything hunting has been a self learning process, and now it rules my life. These days I get to guide my dad on my own boat when fishing. He brings the beer and food and I do everything else. I wouldn't change it for the world. I'm recently married and I cannot wait to start a family of my own, teaching them all the rights and wrongs that my dad did for me. Part of the reason I invest so much time on this site is that not many people feel what I feel out there, thankfully several of us can get together here and talk about it. Great stuff.

    Tough day of calling

Nice! We got one yesterday just outside of town on the first of 2 quick stands. Great looking young female, came in crosswind at 2:00 to a adult/baby cottontail mix and the volume wasn't close to cranking yet.. 12 gauge, lead BBs, DRT. Buddy skinned her up nice but haven't seen a pic yet, hopefully if he reads this he'll post it.

    Fishing near Pine, AZ

Shore access is tough but Blue Ridge Reservoir aka C.C. Cragin would be my recommendation. Beautiful area with above average fishing in comparison to other rim lakes. If I remember right, last time I was there we kids we had some good fishing (again still tough access) near the dam.

    Turkey Scouting

No problem LCC, AT and Amanda. I'll post some more over time as it seemed well received with several downloads. I hesitated posting the draft version of my review with statements like "as well" and a few others but it's all good, my technical writing took some time to develop, and could still use a lot of help!! Worst part is, I still haven't hunted turkey!! I'll be using this thread among others when the time comes next spring though.

    Bartlett crappie?

I'm not going to over advertise-anything here, but one last time visit azcrappie.com if you enjoy crappie fishing. Lot of great people there addicted to Crappie like many of you are addicted to Coues. I go by Papermouth on that site and I'd be happy to get anyone going via pm.

    Bartlett crappie?

Awesome, I look forward to all your reports. I almost made a comment earlier, Sag, Canyon, Apache, should be ready to go as they haven't had the influx of new water and it has generally been warm, early. I don't expect a great crappie bite at Alamo just for a couple hours in between the clean up effort on Saturday but I'll post back on my day trip efforts as well. Fishing secrets and hunting secrets aren't on the same level, I'll share almost anything about fishing. Good luck everyone.

    Shed Consumption

Absolutely! We have an understanding relationship, you show him what is his and he respects what isn't! I appreciate it though, we do have a post or two on that subject here on CWT! If he ever chews up a shed or head that wasn't given to him, I promise I'll post the story for all to laugh at me!

    Shed Consumption

That's awesome, I can imagine! I took the photo on the far left as we were all hanging out playing poker Saturday evening, he didn't move sitting beneath me so I wasn't paying attention to him. One hour later and the photo on the far right shows he took off like 8 inches and I had to take it away until the next day!

    Bartlett crappie?

Lake is coming up 4ft/day with the 3000 cfs releases, just fyi. If it were me I'd fish somewhere else. The bite is going to be shut down IMO! If you do go be safe and steer clear of the area upriver.

    Bartlett crappie?

Bartlett was going good about a month ago and then reports dropped off a bit. Alamo was the place to be the last two weeks. Now it is rising so fast after the storm the bite will take some time to go back to normal. Bartlett is getting 3,000 cfs from Horseshoe right now so that will mess with them finicky little bastards there too. Check out azcrappie.com if you haven't already. Tight lines and soft hook sets!

    Thanks again AG&F

Look at places like Tonto Basin and what has been happening to Roosevelt lake with the gizzard shad invasion. Poor fishing, less tournaments, less people visiting the area period, all equate to poor revenue for the town that grew dependent on it. How AZGFD retains or brings in new hunters and fisherman here in this state plays a major role in the small town revenue people live on as well as just non-resident license revenue for the department. I apologize as my comment above was a little hasty but a lot of folks like to jump to the worst case scenarios when there is actually a bigger picture involved. I do see your side as Mearns are near and dear to you, slightly similar as good puddle ducks are to me. People coming to visit to chase Mearns extends to people falling in love with the country and coming back for other endeavors as well though too.

It isn't possible he guided them with no compensation? I know, we better just expect the worst and post online about it.

    Ethics

It's disappointing. You can't even talk about ethics or etiquette these days on an online forum without CPU tough guys and forum clowns chiming in with more of their useless posts. One thing that's not disappointing though, lot of 'ethical' folks on this site aren't afraid to speak their mind. It's not the distance of the shot you took on the animal if you were prepared for it, it's not the ground blind you left in good condition a couple weeks after the season ended, it's how you treat people and what you do for the big picture of hunting, assuming you care if it sticks around for your family and future generations. The clowns on this site that don't care are loud, but the quiet, lurking majority of folks reading these forums to learn are watching. Please keep posting about how you choose to be ethical, I know I will.
