    game plan

Monitor known WT bucks at all possible for January, become familiar with new rugged elk country for late archery bull, train the dog daily, overhaul waterfowl gear, decoys and blinds - it's going to be a great fall and prepping for it irons out a lot of down time when it's time to release arrows and fire steel in the air.. Good luck to everyone this year, hope your hard work and game plans pay off.

Is it real? Ultra Ever Dry

www.ultraeverdry.com/info Heard of it? Used it? Is it odorless? How long a treatment lasts? (Say on a pair of boots for a 2 week hunt?) I don't know the cost:coverage ratio and application feasibility but this stuff seems like it may be worth looking into.. Please share your thoughts!

Great OP and great pictures everyone!
  5. Phil, I have a seen of few 'makeshift' heaters over the years. I did not build them, test them, and only have the word of the homeowner that they even worked. But, one customer had several hundred feet of black irrigation flex tubing that he plumbed into the return side of his pool filter on a 3/4" ball valve and put it up on his roof. He swore by it. If you are interested in some details free feel to send me a message.

    Dog Training Collars

My dogtra has been nothing but reliable for 3 years. It holds a full charge based on the indicator for several training days before I plug in the dual charging system (one port for remote, one for collar). I have the single package but comes in dual dog as well. http://www.dogtrastore.com/1900series.html One of my favorite things about this collar is the vibrate option instead of the warning beep. I trained my dog to "come" on the vibrate button, so when we are off stomping in the woods together scouting for critters or sheds I can get him back to me without making any noise and disturbing the peace.

    Tree stand help

Check the ones with NO arm rests and metal seats, arm rests get in the way when shooting a Bow, and critters/vandals destroy cloth seats... You can find 12ft ladder stands for 60-$70.00 on sale... Good Luck... Great point, definitely a "con" of the climber. When I drew on that Coues this year my quiver bumped the cross bar in front of me and I had to take my eyes off the peep to make sure I wasn't about to cause problems. Something to think about sooner than later, not when you finally get that moment..

    Tree stand help

Everybody's right. All stand types serve a purpose and are each valuable in a given situation, just have to weigh in your preferences and where you plan on hunting. Absolutely, but all the more reason to use a climber and prepare a couple trees for varying wind. Takes 5 minutes to change trees if the wind is steadily not in your favor, takes 5 seconds to be a "hung bunny" committed to one tree when that buck comes in downwind, as they almost always do. Before last year I only owned hang-on tree stands, for the same reason as many of the comments above regarding tree restrictions. Sound, not so much. It's loud to "hang" a stand, sure you can go in days early and hang it but then you're pretty much committed or you need to own several stands. Owning multiple hang-ons is actually a viable option though when considering cost of a climber vs. hanger. Lots of work though too. I added a climber to the arsenal this year and put my first archery Coues down. Coincidence? Maybe and maybe not, but I have watched many critters show up shortly after relocating 50 yards in the right downwind direction in my limited amount of days in the field chasing big game last November and January. There are plenty of noises in the forest and the rubbing of a tree is a mystery more than a couple yards away. The metal on metal sounds is what worries me. Ladder stands are great too. They're comfortable, somewhat safer, bring the wife, bring a kid. I will definitely own one in the future but right now I'm pretty sure I don't want to haul one deep in the woods on solo hunts. Lots of opinions out there on what's best and many folks may think mine lack merit, but the most important one is 300ultramag's- wear a good, strong, reliable safety system at all times. Also, don't forget to practice falling out of the stand a couple feet above the ground while connected to the tree. Get that foot hold strap sized right and accessible during a fall. Wow, sorry for the winded post. Good luck and stay safe.

    Finding hidden springs

I have found several springs similar to those pictured above and many of them come and go each year. Had one in the superstitions that had water 3 feet deep with flowing water one year in early June and was dry the following year during the January hunt. Same thing experienced in other areas to a lesser degree. My point being that they change frequently and most of the ones on the maps are ones that have had some human influence to keep free water, many times a cement trough or other store and supply device. And I'm in the map/technology business, there isn't a map out there that shows secret springs that others aren't well aware of. IMHO. To find the "hidden" springs as mentioned in the OP, get boots on the ground after studying Topo maps really well. There are indicators that can get you looking in the right direction.

    Fire Information and Data Resources

A few fire information and data resources for those interested in seeking information first hand - Many are familiar with: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ Nationwide fire info particularly on Forest Service lands: http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/googleearth.php Nationwide fire info from USGS: http://www.geomac.gov/asp-bin/GeomacKML/getKML.aspx The viewer is probably what most folks are interested in: http://www.geomac.gov/viewer/viewer.shtml Advanced, can be used to automatically download data, but just in case it helps someone: ftp://ftp.nifc.gov/Incident_Specific_Data/SOUTHWEST/

which pack is the best all around for hunting?

I have mentioned it before but I have the Sacrifice as my "all-around" pack and it's great. My avatar shows my pack stuffed with a boned out Coues and day pack worth of gear. It still had plenty of room even without the vertical expansion (that's where it meets the elk quarter need). It's light, comfortable, collapsible or expandable for varying volume requirements, bow/rifle friendly, an "all-around" great pack IMO.

    Fishing in Yellowstone

Excellent ^^ I started practicing my roll casting in the local canal, can't beat the access but it's hardly suitable for overhand casting.. You might find a lot of fishable water that way though, too.

    Fishing in Yellowstone

+2 on the half day and great advice by scoutm. Aside from that, getting strikes requires a DEAD drift with very few exceptions. Depending on several flow and surrounding vegetation characteristics; mending line and roll casting are essential techniques that a guide can get you fixed up on in no time. A local fly shop up there would be the best way to get on the right flies for this time of year if you choose not to hire a guide. Good luck and have fun!

Weekend Fishing Report... You won't believe it..

Actually, we didn't. Canyon Creek is 4 Trout PER license.. 2 licenses means 4 trout each totaling 8. Trust me, we check every creek before we go even if we have been there before, each different creek, stream, lake, whatever will have a different limit and different baits, we did NOT fish Canyon Creek after losing the trout, went home empty handed. So nothing to really point as, as no laws or regulations were broken. And there was over 24 hours difference and different creeks with different limits. In mr.smith's defense, the 24 hours is the only thing that kept you from breaking the law, which wasn't at all clear the first time. You claimed to fill limits twice, once on each creek, which would be: (4 fish x 2 people x 2 occasions = 16 trout) You are allowed 6 each in a single day: ( = 12 trout) So unless you stopped at 2 each on the Tonto.. Please understand, I'm not trying to be the jerk either but based on what you said, it sounded like you accidentally committed a game violation and sometimes a nice reminder like that protects our resources for the future and could save you a ticket. Sorry you were stolen from, that really does suck, especially in a situation like the one you described. Tight lines and good luck.

Weekend Fishing Report... You won't believe it..

or whatever stole them. Since you didn't mention seeing anybody and they were only 5 feet away, wouldn't be surprised if it was a critter. Have had many bears birds and small carnivores mess with a stringer in that kind of country. Something to think about anyway, hopefully next time you catch the culprit red handed, pawed, clawed, or talon-ed.

    Cast Away

My fiancé is a 2nd grade teacher at an elementary school here in the east valley. The first Friday in May, her school's PTA hosts a spring carnival where teachers host booths of their choice. This year, we hosted "Cast Away!" I set up 5 fishing poles with mostly zebco closed faced reels, I set out 3 kiddie pools (with vegetation and the Heron confidence decoy for realism), and the line of kids started backing up! The look on some of these kids faces to just use a fishing pole was priceless. We ended up getting 115 tickets, with a few kids going more than once, I would say we had at least 100 kids that casted a line. of the hundred kids, I asked each one if they had casted before, about half/50 said yes. of the 50 that said yes, I offered to either help let them try all by themselves, about half/25 opted to try it themselves. of the 25 that tried by themselves with no assistance, I'd say maybe 4-5 kids successfully casted without help. of the 4-5 kids that could cast, 2 of them were absolute ringers. Great kids all around, by the end every kid from ages 2-10 had made a successful cast at a target (not necessarily in it). We (3 of us) were kept very busy for 3 straight hours. There was a line the entire time and we heard several kids and parents tell us at the end of the night that they just couldn't make it over with the wait, we were in high demand. Several kids, in completely isolated events, asked me if I could bring real fish to catch next year or where their parents could take them fishing. And, the bobbers and soft plastics were the first prizes to go. Clear as can be, Our future wants to fish and participate in the outdoors!

  24. Saw this video on fb this morning and thought I would share. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=466616893438810 I'd have a hard time believing the live buck could have had enough force to lock up with an existing dead buck but it seems even more unlikely that scavengers would go after the dead buck and not even scratch the live buck! Alternate ideas of what happen here?

    23 N vs 23 S debate

lol on riding the rez waiting for bulls to wander over Both 23N and 23S have large bulls and great elk country, but IMO which hunt (early/late) you are referring to might sway perception a bit. Everyone has their own areas but 23S likely has more glassing opportunity.
