A few fire information and data resources for those interested in seeking information first hand - Many are familiar with: http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ Nationwide fire info particularly on Forest Service lands: http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/googleearth.php Nationwide fire info from USGS: http://www.geomac.gov/asp-bin/GeomacKML/getKML.aspx The viewer is probably what most folks are interested in: http://www.geomac.gov/viewer/viewer.shtml Advanced, can be used to automatically download data, but just in case it helps someone: ftp://ftp.nifc.gov/Incident_Specific_Data/SOUTHWEST/

which pack is the best all around for hunting?
CouesPursuit replied to Coues Kid's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I have mentioned it before but I have the Sacrifice as my "all-around" pack and it's great. My avatar shows my pack stuffed with a boned out Coues and day pack worth of gear. It still had plenty of room even without the vertical expansion (that's where it meets the elk quarter need). It's light, comfortable, collapsible or expandable for varying volume requirements, bow/rifle friendly, an "all-around" great pack IMO. -
You guys are sharing some great stuff thanks.

Excellent ^^ I started practicing my roll casting in the local canal, can't beat the access but it's hardly suitable for overhand casting.. You might find a lot of fishable water that way though, too.

+2 on the half day and great advice by scoutm. Aside from that, getting strikes requires a DEAD drift with very few exceptions. Depending on several flow and surrounding vegetation characteristics; mending line and roll casting are essential techniques that a guide can get you fixed up on in no time. A local fly shop up there would be the best way to get on the right flies for this time of year if you choose not to hire a guide. Good luck and have fun!

Weekend Fishing Report... You won't believe it..
CouesPursuit replied to Anderson_HOTD69's topic in Fishing
Actually, we didn't. Canyon Creek is 4 Trout PER license.. 2 licenses means 4 trout each totaling 8. Trust me, we check every creek before we go even if we have been there before, each different creek, stream, lake, whatever will have a different limit and different baits, we did NOT fish Canyon Creek after losing the trout, went home empty handed. So nothing to really point as, as no laws or regulations were broken. And there was over 24 hours difference and different creeks with different limits. In mr.smith's defense, the 24 hours is the only thing that kept you from breaking the law, which wasn't at all clear the first time. You claimed to fill limits twice, once on each creek, which would be: (4 fish x 2 people x 2 occasions = 16 trout) You are allowed 6 each in a single day: ( = 12 trout) So unless you stopped at 2 each on the Tonto.. Please understand, I'm not trying to be the jerk either but based on what you said, it sounded like you accidentally committed a game violation and sometimes a nice reminder like that protects our resources for the future and could save you a ticket. Sorry you were stolen from, that really does suck, especially in a situation like the one you described. Tight lines and good luck. -

or whatever stole them. Since you didn't mention seeing anybody and they were only 5 feet away, wouldn't be surprised if it was a critter. Have had many bears birds and small carnivores mess with a stringer in that kind of country. Something to think about anyway, hopefully next time you catch the culprit red handed, pawed, clawed, or talon-ed. -
My fiancé is a 2nd grade teacher at an elementary school here in the east valley. The first Friday in May, her school's PTA hosts a spring carnival where teachers host booths of their choice. This year, we hosted "Cast Away!" I set up 5 fishing poles with mostly zebco closed faced reels, I set out 3 kiddie pools (with vegetation and the Heron confidence decoy for realism), and the line of kids started backing up! The look on some of these kids faces to just use a fishing pole was priceless. We ended up getting 115 tickets, with a few kids going more than once, I would say we had at least 100 kids that casted a line. of the hundred kids, I asked each one if they had casted before, about half/50 said yes. of the 50 that said yes, I offered to either help let them try all by themselves, about half/25 opted to try it themselves. of the 25 that tried by themselves with no assistance, I'd say maybe 4-5 kids successfully casted without help. of the 4-5 kids that could cast, 2 of them were absolute ringers. Great kids all around, by the end every kid from ages 2-10 had made a successful cast at a target (not necessarily in it). We (3 of us) were kept very busy for 3 straight hours. There was a line the entire time and we heard several kids and parents tell us at the end of the night that they just couldn't make it over with the wait, we were in high demand. Several kids, in completely isolated events, asked me if I could bring real fish to catch next year or where their parents could take them fishing. And, the bobbers and soft plastics were the first prizes to go. Clear as can be, Our future wants to fish and participate in the outdoors!

For now but would be interested in a black that could possibly throw yellows Sounds good will keep an ear out, I know a family with a beautiful chocolate AKC but don't have knowledge of her lineage. GL.

Hey Basser - you are only interested in a yellow, correct? or at least for now?

Awesome thinking and reaching out, good luck!!!!

Saw this video on fb this morning and thought I would share. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=466616893438810 I'd have a hard time believing the live buck could have had enough force to lock up with an existing dead buck but it seems even more unlikely that scavengers would go after the dead buck and not even scratch the live buck! Alternate ideas of what happen here?

lol on riding the rez waiting for bulls to wander over Both 23N and 23S have large bulls and great elk country, but IMO which hunt (early/late) you are referring to might sway perception a bit. Everyone has their own areas but 23S likely has more glassing opportunity.

pm sent on locations for baits, they used to inhale anything we threw at them Little crayfish imitations work great, cranks and plastics 2-3" floating rapalas 4" black or dark green senkos texas rigged with small offset shank, no bullet weight 4" pumpkinseed Zoom lizards were the absolute ticket the last 2 years I was there, texas rigged with bullet weight fly rig with pop flies
-
That definitely makes the most sense but I still wonder how other land scavengers weren't attracted to the site after enough avian scavengers were swooping down and feasting! Crazy to imagine what that live buck experienced regardless!

Overall it seems like a great broadhead besides a couple concerns. Can anyone who has used the Ulmer Edge give additional information. To answer your question about the blades swiveling after hitting bone...my broadhead hit ribs going in and on the far side. The chisel tip was dinged up and one of the blades had a chip in it. When I got the broadhead out, the blades were locked open and it still swivels just like new. I have read about guys saying they look just like new and using them again but mine didn't, and I wouldn't reuse it. UlmerEdge head as it lay after a pass through on a medium-bodied Coues buck. It appears to be 100% reusable after breaking ribs on the entry and breaking the humerus on exit. Swivels just like new. Exit wound measured 5" at it's widest but in the shape of a triangle. Maybe because of humerus busting?? Wicked wound regardless, not comparable to my muzzy experience. Muzzy experience was great though, NOT knocking it. Just smaller holes and lighter blood trail. Both bucks expired within 75 yards. I'll reiterate I understand bulls and bucks are not exactly comparable and still yet I have confidence in both broadheads.

Bump this thread once for swimming pool issues with warm weather on the way. PM me for free advice on anything related to your pool's cleanliness or equipment functionality. Stay cool, CWT!

I enjoy how controversial it is. The comments on shot placement and sharp blades are spot on. I choose the ulmer as my mechanical because of its double sided sharpness, lock open design (sure others lock as well), and amazing accuracy in my experience regardless of arrow and tune. Confidence, another spot on piece of advice. One thing is for sure, I hope every archery hunter pays more attention to practicing shot placement and keeping their composure moreso than broadheads and rig flare. Let's spend more time recovering these magnificant critters. Good luck to all in 2014 in all their big game endeavors!

This decision is already haunting me at T-minus 211 days. I had both a muzzy mx3 and ulmer edge perform exactly as desired in the last 6 months. Both were on deer however, which isn't quite comparable to a bull except for shot placement, which is #1 and my first priority. My plan is to tune my muzzys as best as possible with my newly acquired dozen arrows and fall back on the ulmers for accuracy if needed, any thoughts? I am shooting 400+ gr VAPs at 280FPS. Thanks in advance.

Not a huge cat fisherman but I do know to start with good bait live blue gill live or cut carp if you bait up with live bream shave off one side of its scales, will cause it to swim in circles and will help keep it from hiding in a rock or other piece of structure. Good luck!

Same experience here. Thanks for sharing on the Scopecoat.

Introduced my lab to gunfire in same manner as speedygoss. Additionally, at 9 months old on the dove opener, I laid his bowl down to feed him in the desert at first light and walked away 100 yards as he was eating and fired away from his direction. He came running over, I praised him, let him go back to his bowl, and fired again. That was it, he loves loud bangs and food.

I've looked through all 3. They are priced accordingly. The Vultures are not the Vipers, and the Vipers are not the Kaibabs. IMO If I knew I wasn't going to be looking through them all day, the price tag fits that purpose pretty dang good. Still Vortex and still good glass.
