Advice Please - Wary, Mature Coues Bucks
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
This is exactly how I feel, I didn't do such a great job of wording it the first time but this is what I was thinking of doing with the second tree stand. I figure that the bucks ARE going to come back to check things out, they may or may not want the salt at the stand, but if anything, they will be coming on by and may want to take a look as curious as they are.. That curious look upwards toward the stand may be the perfect opportunity.. -

Thanks, James. Appreciate your feedback. We have salt there and that's it. It is thick, quality habitat but it is almost too thick for a ground blind if we want to stay within 50-60 yards. We aren't going to rule out any possibilities though. I agree its winding. It all goes back to the number one rule, wind is everything, I just didn't know it would still play such a role when you were almost 30 feet up in a thick tree. I understand anything can happen, but based from experience, would anyone suggest just sticking to the existing tree stand and when the wind is right it will happen? Or, is an alternative stand/blind almost a must at this point? Thanks. -

Thanks Parrita- The main reason we haven't considered the ground blind is time, I can't imagine bucks of this caliber will just go walking in on such short notice, having a new pop up ground blind in a confined space.. I am wrong?? Any thoughts on how long it takes for mature coues bucks to be active near a brand new ground blind? -
HELP! Need samples from deer harvest for ASU research study!

Back and reading this post 3 years later, I ended up taking a fox out of four peaks and doing the analysis on it. Thank you to those who responded on this! The only blood measure out of ordinary was high level of creatinine, indicating she was catabolizing muscle protein for energy. But overall she was healthy and it is a common transition for an animal at the end of winter (I harvested her in March) -
Nothing but bad experiences at Bear Mountain. I used a popular shop most everyone knows, and they were alright. To be honest I think I caught them on a bad/busy day so I don't want to criticize the business, one time mediocre business deals shouldn't sink ships. But, I wouldn't use him again. I recently was recommended to Daniel at Arizona Archery Club on Deer Valley Rd. What a dude. He made my 8 yo Bear shoot like new and twists one heck of a string. I won't take my bow anywhere else. I also had a gentlemen give me a hand tightening my loop at Usery a couple weeks ago, man I'm drawing a blank but I think he was from Archery HQ, real nice guy. Would use them in a bind because of his kind gestures.

I notice a little noise if i was intentionally shaking it but I did not notice a noise when slinging the arrow.. Thanks for the input though I'm going to shoot a couple more and re-evaulate that noise..

Safe and effective - I own a swimming pool company and found out about DE and killing ants by accident - a good accident that is.. Great recommendation, Tony. Also, this stuff is cheap $ (avoiding Leslie's)

Lol, I thought that escalated quickly . Diminished even quicker!

I never judged your opinion AZHUNTER05, nor did I say they're unalike, just happen think schwacker is a funny name. For instance, I didn't mean to offend you and I hope you "schwack" a deer this season! lol - seriously no offense directed out from this keyboard
-
nevermind on the 5 year old kid, I just read about good old Hank Parker taking them over and naming them.. It all makes sense now!
-
I cannot buy "schwackers" based on their name alone and by that I mean it sounds like those who designed let their 5 year old kid give them their name.. Thanks bonecollector for starting the thread and WHT_MNTMAN for your continued input on these UE posts.

Locus Pro is hands down the best GPS app I have ever used and I do GIS/GPS for a living. For $5 or so, the "Pro" version can pre-download maps for offline use, all points can be imported and exported in various file formats through your computer or someone elses GPS unit. You get free access to the ESRI suite of basemaps, some of the best in the business. As well as other popular basemaps such as MyTopo, Google, Bing, Yahoo, Mapquest, and several others. I have not used a traditional GPS unit in 4 years, not for a single waypoint. I still carry it on occasion as a phone battery is not as reliable as I wish it was. But I keep a full charge on my phone before I go out and then put it in airplane mode without the wifi and other crap enabled. I cannot speak on behalf of the backcoutry app but I'm sure it is good, too. If anyone has any questions with Locus Pro I'd be happy to answer.

Steady Retriever
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
I read about you guys shortly after this post was made, I sincerely appreciate the offer and will follow up with a phone call. I'll throw shoot or retrieve, anything to get in and work with the dogs. Thank you very much, will be in touch.. -
Hello CWT- I'm looking for an owner of/and a steady retriever to assist my 2 year old lab in steadiness of his own. Anyone out there have a very steady retriever that would be willing to run some training drills with me and Drake? Would hope to meet with the dogs and hopefully make a hunting partner or two by the end of the deal. Please send me a note if interested, I live in Mesa. Drake is well mannered and we take our work seriously. Thanks in advance to any that apply! Shea & Drake

Keep that attitude. Don't listen to anyone taking a 78 yard shot on a coues whitetail in the superstitions.. Good luck PM me for some details on 24B spots and experiences in the last couple years.. Take youngbuck's advise and be persistent you sound like you know what you're getting yourself into.

Merriam's elk (Cervus elaphus merriami) were a subspecies extirpated from AZ around 1900. Rocky Mountain elk we have in AZ now are (Cervus elaphus nelsoni). We have enough elk in Arizona IMO. Expensive. Risks too in how they can effect the habitat and T&E. Plus we would restock the wolves and imagine that! lol I have some literature on Merriam's elk pm if interested.

I have never stand hunted for whitetail but hunting water in August obviously seems to be the golden ticket for success in this particular bow hunt. I am hunting a high desert unit in a ground blind on a water source this August.. I was wondering if any coues vets could share their info and experiences on how often bucks use water during the day? Any .02 is Appreciated! Thanks!

WT Buck Water Use and Summer Activity
CouesPursuit replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Thank you STR8SHT. My understanding, and I could be very wrong, is that only the law when it is the ONLY or LIMITED water source? Because in my case I hike past water sources to get to mine.. Legally I have to pack all the way back up to the forest road a mile and a half? There is water everywhere around me.. Probably more seeps and springs hidden right under my nose. Thanks for any feedback its important to clear this up! -

Thanks everyone for the input, I will just have to get some luck at this point! One more question and I figure the answer is yes but is sleeping in your ground blind a big no no? Is scent from sleep too much to sit in a stand for second day in a row? I have another stand I could hunt a few hundred yards away on water (needing to invest in a treestand) but i need to pack camp for a day or 2.. 1.25 mile hike in thick just enough to say not in and out dark for 3 days straight! Iv chased these bastards for 2 years now and gotten so close I can taste it.. Now im willing to be patient and wait in the shade!! Its so hot out there! I do wonder with AntlerObsession what the monsoon will do during the hunt though as in will deer just hit small puddles or still hit perennial sources where they feel comfortable?? ALL LUCK I GUESS!! Good hunting, I hope to share some good trail cam pics for the August stand havent checked the camera in a few weeks... -

To be honest, I'm not looking for size to any extent. If I see an eruption and an ethical shot there will be a down coues. I have put myself in a ground blind in a remote place on water with salt with lots of deer track. Allowing plenty of time (8 weeks) for things to settle, should I feel confident SOMETHING with antlers will come in during day light hours? -

Had an interesting hunt today.. I have been chasing whitetails for 2 years now, basically I don't care what size the antlers are.. period!! Meat and satisfaction to countless hours of hiking, glassing, gallons of gas, dollars in tags, gear, you all know what I'm talking about! I just want to fly an arrow! I have been busted on the draw, swirling wind within 60 yards, I'v had deer stay bedded on their knees in patches of evergreen sumac (Rhus ovata) (Sorry I'm a plant nerd, help me get a job I hope) until sunlight dissipated.. Like any coues whitetail hunter bad stalk plans needing to learn from mistakes etc etc.. I've had 10+ close encounters. But today was even closer. Saw a spike and a doe 250 yards from road elevated chaparral/desertscrub started my stalk not til 4 pm! Wind: Ideal! straight from eastern deer location Spike was on the right, 40 yards or so from the ridge finger.. Doe left bedded away! Took one hour extremely quiet stalk well executed came over ridge started to hear that infamous whitetail weez!! I hate that dang sound as exhilarating as it is! But this weez was different.. very light, 5 repetitions with long pauses.. He wasn't fully busted! Just so happen (even though i looked around as best as i could prior to the stalk with my binos) 4 other does were below and left of my 2 first spotted.. They must have saw my movement coming over the ridge for the shot while dialing in yardages.. I waited 20 minutes, quietly the does settled back down from staring in my direction and the weezing finally stopped (from a location I knew was just beyond a juniper concealing my entire movement).. I watched the does actively feed again then bed and I went over the ridge with bow drawn where I knew the spike was standing 46 yards (I have practiced this distance) The 2 deer were staring at me broadside while I was drawn and I stared at what I was 90% sure was the spike pin almost set... I couldn't verify antlers!!! For 20 seconds they stared, I steadied.. The one I thought was the spike was stomping his hoof pissed off and I still couldn't see those little eruptions the sun was behind the mountain by now! eventually all the whitetails flagged the weez was louder than ever and once again.. Haunting dreams.. The routine. Anyway I call this hunt successful. I could have taken a shot at a coues whitetail spot and stalk. Every time it's closer.. and closer.. Anyone out there hunting get it done tomorrow!!!!
