Even in late October you will get frost at night, it gets pretty cold up there. Well Jacob Lake is at 7900' and it can get bitter cold. While heavy snowfalls are rare you definitely need to keep on eye on the weather. I don't recall the year but I believe it was late 80's where a storm dumped so much snow that people couldn't get trailers and RV's out and were left there for the winter. http://www.intellicast.com/Local/History.aspx?month=11

I'd go $675 to $750 on a good day. No doubt you have more than that into it but that is the range for a factory rifle with a stock that will shoot the same size groups either from factory loads or tweeking handloads.

General Purpose/ Back up Rifle

I agree with you on the balance of a 24" barrel, it is my preference for a big game rifle. I have had a few rifles with magazines and have never experienced an issue in 20 years and an average hunt for me is walking 1 - 6 miles. That is with 788's and tow different models of Tikkas. -
Did you also fish for halibut too?

You need to tell those guys to stop giving the Puma's a free pass. -

Do you shoot doves prone? Start out with something reasonable like an open sight 22. Shoot targets at 50 yards offhand and see what your groups are. Then move on to a 30-30 with open sights at 100 yards and see what kind of groups you can get. Then take a rifle like your 6.5 and shoot offhand at paper plates at 200 yards and from a sitting position. Remember though don't beat yourself up over the size of the group if it doesn't meet your expectation, work on getting it to something you can consistently do and it minute of quarry in the kill zone. I used to go out to Congress and shoot Jack Rabbits with a 22-250 just walking around. Once the rifle is on your shoulder and your eye into the scope get the shot off in three seconds or less. There are a lot of tools like bipods out there and they are useful but not applicable to every terrain. Lots of experimentation and practice creates ability and gives you confidence. -
I don't know if there is a Walmart in Wickenburg but they can order you one and their prices are usually pretty competitive. What do you plan to build?

With BDL bottom metal.

It appears that what you have is a BDL.

Here you go? Hope that helps. This was the first run stainless they did in about 1992 in 7 Rem Mag.

I rented a Dodge last summer for a week in Colorado and it had more than enough power. About the only thing I didn't like was they got rid of the shift lever on the steering column and replaced it with a dial next to the column on the dash. Maybe too much lowend torque as on wet pavement it would break the tires loose. My brother has one and I actually did a 360 pulling out onto a four lane during the rain. Takes some getting used to. Then I rented an F150 in February while in Fort Myers for a few days. Not as much power as the Hemi, maybe had a V6? Never popped the hood but the sound system was incredible and overall it was more comfortable to drive.

You always were a High Roller amigo.

Lots of power, crappy mileage and a Jap truck. Get a Dodge.

Never heard of any of those. Do your self a favor and go shoot High Power Silhouette for a year. Too many people pigeon hole them selves by only shooting under perfect conditions and never really become full fledged shooters. Shooting from the bench will give you an insight for the rifle, but for field condtitons nothing beats the real deal. If your rifle is accurate enough then you need to be proficient enough to take and make a 50 yard to 300 yard off hand shot in under 3 seconds. Only way to do that and have the confidence is practice, lots of practice. Shooting jackrabbits in the off season is a start. Most people can shoot targets, even out to ridiculous distances from a rest using their "App". Rarely have I been in an actual hunting situation where that was practical. -
Never been but would like to go. Can you post the logistic's of putting a trip together?

Well that's just fishing. Fortunately for us dies hards it only happens a few times in our lives, at least that my experience in 64 years of chasing fish.

This came up in the 24Hour thread above and has been brought up on here too so I would say they are legit if you want a hog hunt. https://www.hangemhighwhitetails.com/

$1 per pound seems steep, does that include taking the hair off? Just curious as I have never hog hunted.
