I have struggled with the boot question for years. I have narrow heels and most boots give me blisters. I even tried on a pair of Kenetreks and could tell in the store they would give me blisters on my heel. I picked up a pair of Salomon Quest boots 1/2 off at the REI garage sale and I love them. If they ever stop making them I think I will buy 5 or 6 of them to have a lifetime supply.

I bought a used pair of Kaibab's and they gave me headaches like you described. So I sent them in to Vortex and they were out of alignment. They fixed them for free and I have not had any problems since. I am very happy with them and don't regret the purchase.

Dry bags are gone.

The shoes are EE width. It is just the outside of my right foot that gets sore after a day of hiking. I will be driving to the airport in Phoenix on the 25th, but it would be between 6 and 7 a.m. I have somebody coming by today at 2 for the dry bags.

That is awesome, he will be fishing for a long time to try and top that personal best! Did you find out what happened with the big ones skin?

This was my first trip to Apache. I had always gone to Roosevelt because it was shorter and I am a creature of habit. My wife and son went to Idaho to visit family for a week. With no responsibilities I decided to take my last personal day and head to a new lake for some much needed rest a relaxation. I got in late on Thursday night, but was up at 5 a.m. to hit the water. I tried my darndest, but could only manage a half dozen bights with a couple of fish on that came unbuttoned at the boat. I guess I needed a day to get back into the fishing groove after almost a year away from the water. Despite sleeping in on the second day I managed to boat a couple decent bass before 8:30 on a texas rigged worm. The bites slowed, but I found a few nice coves to set my lawn chair up in the water while enjoying a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I caught another bass by a submerged boulder with a texas rigged creature bait after lunch. After the wind died down I headed to a new part of the lake and found a nice area secluded from the wind with some vegetation. I was watching a lot of sun fish swimming near the surface when I heard a swirl in the vegetation that had to be a bass. I casted a weightless senko a few feet from the disturbance and my line was tight within a couple seconds. The bass at Apache seem very healthy, and gave a harder fight than I remembered from my previous catches. I was pleased to get an 18 incher in the boat, which was my second best AZ bass. The next day I caught a smaller bass on a drop shot. Then the wind picked up and I decided it was time to drift back to the dock and head home. I put on a heavier weight with a sweet beaver to comb the shore line with while I drifted. I was surprised to pull a blue gill up on a bait that seemed half as big as the fish. It was nice to stick one after all of the false excitement they had given me over the weekend with their taps at the end of my bait. I give him credit for biting off more than he could chew. Another new experience for me was seeing the half dozen drag boat racers on the lake. It was interesting to be taking in the beautiful scenery on a glassy lake at dusk only to have your ear drums shattered by an engine that sounded like it could propel a B-52 bomber to supersonic speeds. I ended up talking to one of the guys by the dock at he said his boat would hit 125 mph, and if he opened it up it would burn a gallon of gas in a quarter mile. I have to say that the drag boats did not resonate with me as a fisherman, but maybe if I got to take a ride in one it would give me a new appreciation. All in all it was a good trip, and now I have the fishing bug. I guess it probably won’t go away until hunting season comes around again.

+1 on catching bluegill for bait. I think that will help your odds of getting a big one.

I bet that is a kick in the pants to shoot. Have fun.

I was able to get away for three days to do some fishing at Apache Lake. I decided to drive across the lake and camp in a nice little cove I found on my last trip. It seems like a body of standing water brings the riff raff out of the wood work, and they are usually loud, drunk and on their worst behavior by the time the sun goes down. I have had enough negative experiences at group campsites to avoid them whenever I can. I guess my plan for a nice quiet peaceful night backfired because I was just about to go to sleep and I start to hear woofing. I turned on my headlamp and saw five javalina not 15 feet from my cot. They froze for a while, and then ran off. I don’t think they were very happy with me for blocking their trail to water, and they voiced their displeasure for the next half an hour or so before wandering off. I have to say it was much more exciting and enjoyable listening to them than drunkards, loud music, and dogs attacking other dogs and people. This was by far my best fishing trip I have had in Arizona. I caught my personal best largemouth at 21 inches, by personal best catfish at 29 inches, and my best smallmouth. I also caught more fish than usual. I would like to think I am starting to figure these desert fish out, but it is probably more luck than anything. I caught fish on a bunch of different lures, but my best bass came on a senko. It is crazy how finicky the bass are. I would find one lure and presentation that would be on fire for a couple of hours, and I thought I had discovered the holy grail of bass fishing. I would come out the next day, throw the same thing the same way, and haul nothing but water. I was packing up my camp on the third day, and there was a rattle snake right between my camp and my boat. I must have walked right past him three or four times. The last time I would have stepped on him if he hadn’t started making noise. Thank goodness those things have rattles on them! Even though my buddy's were not able to make it, this trip will be hard to beat.

Awesome article. I see the types of kids/parents they are talking about all the time as a high school teacher. It is good for me to read now that I have a son of my own. I think most parents have good intentions and don't even realize they are doing more harm than good.

Are bipods really worth the extra weight?
rclouse79 replied to AZ_SAWBUCK's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
YES! I like my 9-12 inch Harris. I have the one that tilts with an alpha bravo pod lock. I am planning to do some backpack hunts next year and have been looking into gear weight. My thinking is to not skimp on essential items, and try to offset any additional weight by getting as fit as I can before the hunt. -
The father of three kids I have taught and coached over the last 8 years was by the finish line when the bombs went off. I was looking at the news for the incident and ended up clicking on a few other news stories. I am extremely depressed about the state of our world and country. I don't see life as we know it continuing for much longer with the way things are headed. It is time for me to put my trust in God. Prayers to those who were injured and lost their lives.

Obummer slams AZ

Has anybody started to count down the days until this no talent a$$ clown is out of office? -
I have been lifting legs and doing abs everyday (in hopes of getting drawn to hunt elk in the Rocky Mountains). I google earthed the area and it looks like either get in shape or don't even bother going.

I was pulling for the wildcats to win, but this game seemed to fit their character. Get up and then let up. It was still a good game. . . . maybe next year.

I am not a huge fan of badlands. I have had to sent my pack in three times. The last time I sent it in was for the zipper breaking on one of the side pockets during my elk hunt. I also pointed out holes in the material around the waist belt, holes in the mesh material pocket that holds my tripod, and 4 or 5 zippers that had broken off which I had replaced with string. The zipper was fixed and was just fine. Their fix for the holes starting in the padding around the waste belt was to put hot glue on it. They fixed the hole in the mesh by looping a bunch of string through it and tying it off. I guess they fixed the pack, but for paying twenty some bucks for shipping I think I will try to "fix" the pack myself the next time I have a problem with it. Next time I am looking to blow some money I think I will try an Eberstock.
