    New Contest

Thank you to everyone who commented on my opening day story. I liked that there were almost as many comments about my blisters as my deer. I actually did wear the boots out quail hunting and for walks around the neighborhood, but I guess that did not do a good job of simulating coues hunting. I could not be happier with my deer, but I know he is not the caliber to compete in a big buck contest. With that in mind I decided to start a new contest I think I have a shot of winning. If anybody thinks they can beat this bad boy, throw up the pics. Congrats to all the other guys who posted pictures and stories of their opening weekend bucks.

    New Contest

My dad told me if you are going to be stupid you have to be tough.
  4. I usually walk through a ranch to get to where I set up for opening morning. I have run in to people multiple times, and ask if it is ok if I walk through. They have always been nice and said no problem. This morning I was almost through the ranch when a lady comes out and asks “who are you?” Long story short she didn’t want me walking through the ranch, so I obliged and headed back the way I had come. I knew I wouldn’t make my first spot by shooting light, but was trying to book it anyway. My hurried pace caused my new boots to give me some gnarly blisters on my heels. I limped up to my rise and set up my new Kaibab 15’s 45 minutes after my desired time. Looking through my new binoculars on a tripod was a treat in itself. I ended up glassing three spikes and a nice sized forky. I was hoping to shoot something bigger than last year so I just watched them. After about 10 a.m. , everything seemed to quiet down. I was bummed because I had planned to hike to the top of another hill for my evening hunt, but I knew my heels were not up for a monster hike. There is a little hill that my buddy use to sit, and I thought I could make it up there so I set out. After a slow shuffle up, I sat down on the top of the hill for a rest. I did not have high expectations for finding deer, so I leisurely sat back against my pack and glassed through my 8x binoculars. I was shocked when I saw antlers under a tree 300 yards away within minutes of sitting down. (I love how the best things always seem to happen when you are expecting nothing). I decided to sneak back up a few feet to try and set my rifle up for a prone shot through the ocotillo. I think I made just enough noise to get the buck up and moving. I checked him through the binoculars and saw he was moving up behind the group of trees where I had spotted him. I found him in the scope and he gave me a nice broadside 300 yard shot. This is my fifth deer I have taken out of this unit. My first was a single spike, followed by a small fork, followed by a slightly bigger fork, followed by a nice fork, followed by this year’s three point. I held my new pb up to my pb from last year in one of the photos. It is funny to spend so much time and money before the season for seven hours of actual hunting. I am already getting excited for next year.

    Who's ready?

Revised the hunting list, shot the rifle, packed the truck, got a sub for Friday, got my buddy to drop off and pick up my son from day care. Now I just have to wait. I am excited to see what my new Kaibabs will uncover.

    binocular question

I know a lot of guys on this sight hunt with 15x binoculars. My question is do you carry a light weight low magnification pair around your neck as well? What models and magnifications have you found to work best for you? I already know that the big three are the “best”, but I blew all of my money on a pair of kaibabs and am looking for something between $100 - $200. Right now I am looking at minox, pentax, and Nikon, but am open to any others. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Things your huntin buddies do that drive you nuts : )

Great post. I wish I still had my hunting buddy to rub me the wrong way, but he moved to Colorado a couple months ago. He says he is still going on the elk trip we drew for, but I will believe it when I see it. He never really bothered me, but he would get grumpy about day 3 or 4 if we weren't seeing much. A few years back I dropped him off to hunt his way back to camp. I was sitting in the drivers seat watching him grab his stuff out of the back when he hit his head on the corner of the window to the camper. I tried to contain my laughter when he took a swing at the truck, but it was no use. I think I would rather hunt alone than hunt with most people, but it sucks to lose a good hunting partner.

    Cleaning optics!!!!

I was wondering if anyone else had any negative experiences with the ziess wipes. I poked around on the internet for a few minutes and couldn't find a bad thing about them. They seem to be the standard.

    Cleaning optics!!!!

Interesting post. I used the carbon end of the lens pen after using the brush, and it seemed to work pretty well. I don't think I will be getting another pair of binoculars again for a very long time, so I want to be as careful as possible. Are these the wipes recommended by swaro? http://www.safetyglassesdirect.com/erb-safety-erb-15697/

    Starflight fob?

I think I got better arrow flight with them. You have to wrap your arrow with some bright tape or you will never find it when the fob pops off. The only bad thing is you have to shoot at different spots on your target when you are practicing or you will damage them.

    270 elk load

I had my mind made up I was going to shoot 130 gr noslers accubonds for deer and elk, but the 130 gr barnes ttx shot better groups out of my tikka. I used close to the max recommended load with H4350. It did the job on last years elk from a couple hundred yards out.

    36C Tag Early November

I did run into around 15 illegals walking down a wash behind elk horn ranch a couple years back without incident. I wish I glassed up as many big bucks as I do illegals in that unit. I see some every time I go out. Not too many people want to bother a cammo'ed out guy with a high powered rifle. Taking stuff from your rig is another story, but I have never had anything stolen down there.

Two Javelina Bag Limit (under some circumstances)

I would love that. Then I could go walk around the desert with my bow in January and scare a few, and actually shoot one with my rifle in February.

my first run in with cwt.com

That guy must have fallen through the cracks despite the 16 page application, 2 hour interview, and 14 day waiting period it takes to be issued a cwt.com sticker. I know I was sure bummed when my application for a cwt.com sticker got denied because I was deficient in my community service hours. Even though I was not considered worthy to be issued a cwt.com sticker, everyone I have dealt with on this site has been pretty cool.

Bog Pod with shooting rest and camera mount

    Gone, Thanks Live2hunt.
  18. I was not a fan of the red foam, which is why I taped it in camo. I saw the bog pod was going for $90 and the camera adapter for $60 on amazon. I am asking $100 for both.

10 yr old swaro vs new vortex kaibab

Dang, I am wrestling with this same question right now. I got a little side job putting in flooring that will give me enough play money to be in the market for one or the other. It seems like a good used price on a pair of SLC's is abou $400 more than used Kaibabs. Part of me feels like if I am dropping a grand I might as well spend a few hundred bucks more and get the swaro's. I don't know why but there are only 2 reviews on Cabelas for the Kaibabs, which seems strange considering how popular they are. There are about 130 for the swaros. 99% of the swaro reviews said they were pricy, but worth every penny. My only problem with dropping all of my money on swaros is i know there are tripods, tripod heads, adapters, cases, covers, ect. still to buy. I guess the good thing is in either case is they seem to hold their value pretty well. Good luck with your chioce.

    Craigslist SCAMS

The only reason I even check the e-mails to to reply unpleasant things to the scammer. After you try to sell a few things the scams are so easy to spot it isn't even funny. Face to face for cash in a public place after a phone call is the only way to go. I also won't drive further than a mile that my house to sell something. I made the mistake of driving half way across town to sell some rock climbing gear. I put four pictures of it in the ad, and said it had been sitting in my closet for 6 years. When the turd saw it he said he was looking for something newer. I felt like kicking him in the crotch region, but it was my fault for assuming he wouldn't be a moron. If somebody really wants to buy something they will drive to you.

    Bowfishing Setup

I put my bowfishing reel on this never been shot, 29 inch draw, ss stealth alpine bow. If you can live with purple it would make a nice bowfishing setup. I am looking to get $200 or would consider trading for a vortex rifle scope with a bdc recticle and 12 x mag. Call Rob at six 09-2924.
