    Trekking Poles

On my goat hunt last year they saved me a broken leg. I bent one pole pretty bad, I don't always use them but when I'm planning on extended heavy backpack trips they are worth their weight. I have a pair of black diamond.

    Long range scopes

IMO please stay away from Vortex. I hate to be debbie downer all the time but for under 1k you will not get a good vortex. You can find better in that price range. I don't have any experience in the 1k+ Vortex scopes.

    What to do with 5BP's

has there even been 1 good buck killed on that hunt since it came about? like 170+ or even a 150 I've seen some in the 70s and maybe low 80s and a few cool character bucks, but overall it is tough for me to justify 5 or 6 points on this hunt. Most of the pictures you will see are 150" bucks that are photogenic and look bigger..rifle especially.

    13B Questions

Just be realistic about your chances. I do not have a ton of experience up there but I believe that if you hunt hard and don't give in to the depression that low deer densities can give you, I think you should be able to harvest a 180-200" deer with a chance of getting lucky and killing a giant on your own. If you want to be chasing bigger a guide is probably your best bet.

    Crispi Idaho GTX size 12.5

They run very close in size. I have a pair of 11.5 that are just a bit too big. I usually wear an 11. Great boot probably my favorite of all time and I've had 2 pair of Kenetrek, Vasque, all kinds of Merrill and Danner etc...

    What to do with 5BP's

I'm up to 9 and have only put in for 13b archery the last 2 years. I am in no mans land also. I have at least 4 more years before I can expect an archery strip tag. At some point you need to decide how long you want to wait. You are at least 2 maybe 3 years away from a decent tag like a late Coues or 3a3c etc.. and quite a bit more for Kiabab and Strip. I hunt every year in Mx and Archery and trying to do UT, or CO so I have decided I want to wait. It really sucks though.

    Berger bullets on Coues...

From what I have seen it doesn't matter what bullet you use if you hit only hide. I've seen AB, partition,Barnes etc..leave pencil holes when they miss ribs, bone. That is why I aim for the shoulder. I've had quite a bit less meat loss with Berger than with many other bullets. My results may not be the norm but I usually have them penetrate and break the shoulder, absolutely destroy the insides and stop short of damaging much of the meat on the far shoulder. Just my experience. The only time I've seen them "fail" is with a gut shot. ( not me) but not many bullets can compensate for poor shot placement. That is another reason to shoot the most accurate bullet in your rifle whatever that may be.

    Berger bullets on Coues...

I shoot a 210 Berger out of my 300 ultra and a 140 out of my 280ai. Great results from over 1000 yards to 80 yards. My wife shot a coues buck at 80 yards and there was a hole the size of 2 softballs out the neck. (Quartered away) Shots over 300 yards rarely exit with either caliber. I love a bullet that will dump all of its energy inside the animal.

    7mm-08 vs 6.5 creedmoor

Well since Lark isn't around anymore, it needs to be said by someone. 6.5 Creedmoor 7mm-08 just sounds like a woman's cartridge

    Scouting in 3b

Years ago some of the depredation hunts were for ANY elk. Not sure if that hunt is the same. I found a great big ol velvet bull for my buddy that had a similar hunt but he was about 1/2 mile away and the bull was moving out of the hunt area. We ate the tag but it would have been very cool to shoot a big ol velvet bull.

Hunting has Changed for the Worst...

I believe social media has been the most recent cause of the "change". Before that it was Internet, websites like this. Before that TV shows, before that Newspaper, Before that Big buck contests in the local sporting good stores, before that money (commercialization of pigeons and bison). So on and so forth. There will always be something, hunting is always changing. How are we going to influence it for the better, and what are we teaching our posterity are the questions I'm worried about. I have almost given up all social media because of the current trend, but I still love to get on this site and read others stories, see others successes and share my own. To me it is much bigger than the "look at me "attitude. I've made quite a few friends on this site and I hope I can contribute to make it better. This site would be so much better if more people shared their stories and pictures. I see and read too many of the "regulars" that do not contribute for one reason or another but then complain about this site going downhill. Hunting, CW.com and many other things in life are what you make them. To me CW.com means enough to me that I try to do my part in making it a great place to be.
  20. Not to derail Bonecollectors thread, but what is your most memorable Coues! For me it was my first Archery Coues buck on Christmas Eve Unit 33 Spot and Stalk My son killed this on a backpack hunt and it was incredible. Made a perfect shot on a bedded buck at 401 yards. Don't Mind the backpack, all down hill from here, little off balance.

    Memorable Shots

I killed an archery bull elk at 5 yards and rifle mule deer at 5 feet running full tilt with a hip shot with a 30-06. I've also killed quite a few at ranges I don't want to discuss here.

    Fishing Outfit Rant

Well maybe I see it a little differently. I am a small business owner in a small town, but I would be very flexible and try and work things out the best we can. I try and make my customers as happy as possible. I don't necessarily think they did anything wrong but could have been more compassionate and a little more flexible IMO Maybe that is why I am still a SMALL business owner.
