The shooter came back after Christmas and shot a 12 year old 172 class ram. Of course I had family obligations and couldn’t be there!

They switched for “safety” (liability) reasons around 1984. I think Melvin Forbes has an after market 3 position safety with bolt lock.

Favorite Bullet for Coues?
MMACFIVE replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Barnes in any gun that will group them. Nosler AB or Partition otherwise. Never seen a bullet failure with any of these. -
My 8's and 15's almost never see any use since I bought 12's. I can hand hold them if I have too (they are on the tripod most of the time). I don't miss or need the extra power of the 15's and the field of view is amazing. It saves me one piece of glass to carry compared to the 8 (10) / 15 combo. I usually dual mount them with my spotting scope to get hat instant feedback.

Good advice. That ram may be north of 170. When stalking him a huge malipi rock broke free and tumbled the shooter. Broke his rifle stock in half, destroyed his Swaro rifle scope....and destroyed his his back. We will regroup and we will be back.

This guy might be over 150.....

Help.... I’m helping a friend in 45b for sheep and having a heck of a time seeing anything. It could be I just suck but my pride isn’t willing to accept that! We have been on the north end of the unit . As far down as red raven wash/hoodoo well and on the NW end by the Kofa Cabin and Alamo wash. Does anyone have any suggestions? We have seen a couple of 150 type rams but Dzongkha really wants one over 160...

Kimber mountain ascent rifle
MMACFIVE replied to recurveman's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My son has a Rifles Inc in 270. Complete with VX6HD 3x18 and Talley rings it comes in under 6 1/2 lbs. I have no problem going prone and shooting sub 2" groups at 500 yards with this gun. It still shoots sub 1/2 moa at 800 yards which is about as far as I've shot it. I think it is harder to shoot a lighter rifle but practicing with one will make a person a better shot in the long run. -

Only a few hours left before I leave. There is still time to work something out. -

This is a steal. I find it hard to believe no one has bought it. -
There are times in the right light when it works excellent with the BTX. Remember the BTX already splits the light to goto both eyes then the 1.7x looses over half the light once again. In Photography this would be about 2 2/3 F-Stops. Ive never used it with the spotting scope. It’s hard enough to get to use the 70x of the scope sometimes.

When we had 12x50 ELs and 15x56 SLCs (BTW: 15x Leica blows the socks off 15x56 SLC neu!) there was a clear winner. The 12's all day. Since we upgraded to the 15x56 HDs its flip a coin. I like to carry the 12's or the 12's and a spotting scope. I like the lighter weight and wider field of view of the 12's. My son prefers the 15's. He likes the extra 3x (and you can tell the difference with the 3x). I just carry the 12's. He often carries both 8's and the 15's.

lets talk effective distance for caliber/bullet weight
MMACFIVE replied to Tac's topic in Long Range Shooting
Lance, Your are one of the most knowledgeable members on this form with respect to long range shooting. Quoting you: Just because a bullet has a high BC, a lighter bullet is still going to drift more than a heavy high BC bullet. Takes more force to move the higher mass. Making a .338LM a much better ELR candidate than a 6.5CM. The 6.5CM definitely ups your wind reading game though, and far cheaper to shoot for practice. When I read this I inferred that you were talking about the same BC and velocity, just different bullet weight. The statement of Takes more force to move the higher mass. is what made me react to your comment. I know you know that the mass is calculated into the BC and its the higher BC/profile, not the mass, that makes the difference in wind drift. I have repeatedly heard that a heavy bullet will drift less than a light bullet which isn't true. If the heavy bullet happens to have a higher BC then that's a different story. And if the lighter bullet has a higher BC, well then..... -

MMACFIVE replied to Tac's topic in Long Range Shooting
Your are absolutely correct: A big 338 is a much better ELR round than a 6.5. That's why there are things like 375 Cheytacs, 416 Barrets, etc. Where do you want to draw the line? My only point is with equal BC's and equal velocities the drop and drift will be the same. Regardless of weight or caliber. That is what a BC is. -

Lance, This is one of the few times I disagree with you. A bullets BC has the weight factored in. If an 140 gr, 6.5mm bullet and a .338, 300 gr bullet have the same BC and are going the same velocity they will have the same wind drift at all distances. This a long living myth we need to debunk. Try putting a 1 gr bullet and a 1000 gr bullets with the same BC and same velocity into you Applied Ballistics calculator and look at the wind drift at 1500 yards and you will find the drift is the same. How about $1950 out the door plus Shipping for NIB? Don’t dismiss the 85mm: 30x vs 35x, lighter, more compact, better balanced, and as bright an image as the 95.

What rifle caliber is most common for coues deer hunting in AZ?
MMACFIVE replied to THREEDFLYER's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
If I remember correctly the ELDX was announced in the fall of 2016. So if you killed a buck a few years ago it wasn’t with the 143ELDX??? -

My apologizes. You are right. You effectively made a statement that a 264 WM is not effective (to your standards) past 650 yards. Fair enough. Each of us should be able to have our own opinions without judgement. -

Be careful. If you don’t like the performance of a 6.5 CM at 375 yards your not going to like your 264 WM at 650 yards. You might need to step up to a 26 Nosler or a big 7 if you want to go further It’s not too hard to get 2900 fps with a 130 gr bullet from a CM. Heck, a few are pushing 3000 fps with a 140 gr bullet.
